In Laurie’s Halse Anderson book Speak, she uses the quote “I rock, thumping my head against the cinder-block wall. A half-forgotten holiday has unveiled every knife that sticks inside me, every cut. No Rachel, no Heather, not even a silly, geeky boy who would like the inside girl I think I am” (Anderson pg.110). No one is perfect in life, they can get help in life but if they cannot get help from that one person they trust, they can go to another person. If they can get help from that one person that might help the problem out. So, you don’t feel terrible about the problem anymore. You can feel better in life until something terrible happens again. You can treat other people with respect and if they do not treat you with respect that does not mean you can be disrespectful back to them. …show more content…
David Petrakis dissects an apple right next to Melinda and the smell of the apple gave her a flashback of a happy moment when she was little when she visited an apple orchard with her parents. David is fighting for his freedom of speech in Mr. Neck class for Social Studies. David put up a video camera in the back of the room to record Mr. Neck. The reason why David put the camera in class is because Mr.Neck was glaring at him. David fought for his freedom of speech which is the opposite of Melinda’s inability. As David is still standing up to Mr. Neck, Melinda is more impressed by his refusal to be victimized or bullied. David is considering becoming a
Kevin Gates is an inspirational speaker and pushes people to push them self. “Love the people god gave you because he will need them back someday.” Is what he is saying in this quote is don't spend so much time on not liking people and just enjoy life and don't fight with others. “Don't lose your mind trying to wait for people to come to their senses.” In this quote Kevin is saying don't tear yourself down when people don't talk to you or contact you.
To me this meant that one should be able to act nice towards others despite any preconceived notions of flaws.
In the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, Anderson uses irony to exaggerate Melinda's loss in friendship. After Heather told Melinda she doesn’t want to be friends with her anymore, she ended up giving Melinda a thank you card for understanding that Heather does not want to be friends with Melinda anymore and returned her friendship necklace. At first, Melinda thought the card was from David but, "The card has a picture of two cutesy teddy bears sharing a pot of honey. I open it. 'Thanks for understanding. You're the sweetest!' It is signed with a purple pen. 'Good Luck!!! -Heather’ ” (Anderson 110). The irony is used when Heather is thanking Melinda for “understanding” that Heather does not want to be friends with Melinda anymore. Heather
David's instructor was intimidating, rude, and somewhat abusive, but despite these things he used her behavior as a motivator to succeed. David was not about to give up and he: "refused to stand convicted on the teacher's charge of laziness," and due to that, he studied for 4 or more hours every night because he was determined to stand out (Sedaris, 1999). David clearly had a reaction to his teacher’s approach, which created a sense of urgency and a need to excel. His choice to persevere, despite her attitude, caused him to work hard, and he was once again able to use humor to get through by adding jokes to his responses to her quizzes. This whole experience shaped him into a better person and made him
In the book Million Dollar Throw it is certain that the best friend of main character Nate Brodie is Abby McCall. Abby is the best friend because she has many character traits that make her that. For example, she supports Nate in everything. She attends all of Nate’s football games, and is there whenever he needs someone to talk to. On page 53, it says “... more perfect was if his dad had been able to be here. But at least his mom was here and had picked up Abby on the way.” Abby comes to all of his games despite her worsening eyesight and eventual blindness. But she still comes, even though she is risking her own self. As you can see, these traits make Abby his best friend.
Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, is a story written in the first person about a young girl named Melinda Sordino. The title of the book, Speak, is ironically based on the fact that Melinda chooses not to speak. The book is written in the form of a monologue in the mind of Melinda, a teenage introvert. This story depicts the story of a very miserable freshman year of high school. Although there are several people in her high school, Melinda secludes herself from them all. There are several people in her school that used to be her friend in middle school, but not anymore. Not after what she did over the summer. What she did was call the cops on an end of summer party on of her friends was throwing. Although
In the novel Friendswood, the character Hal is struggling to live the religious life he says he has. Hal is extremely desperate for a house that he knows will sell quick, and people take advantage because they know how much he needs a sale. He is looking for someone to give him the perfect house that will almost sell on its own. He doesn’t take the responsibility of his actions he pushes them onto his prayer and religion to make him feel as though he is a good, religious man. Hal is a recovering alcoholic and, previously, was having an affair, but Hal finds comfort and stability in his religion and prayer.
In the the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, the character Heather, Melinda’s ex-friend and member of the Martha clan, has many interesting character traits. Her most prominent traits are, that she is very petty, she is talkative, and that she is very driven. Heather is very petty. When Melinda is at Heathers house, in her room, Heather starts to cry because she is not popular, “Here people don't know I exist.
Howard should not have gotten a lobotomy because there was nothing wrong with him, he was just being mistreated. He was punished for things he didn’t do, his step-mother picked favorites with the other kids, and he was abused by his parents. So a lobotomy was an extreme measure in his case for the things he did and didn’t do.
Although this quote seems fairly self-explanatory, there’s more to it that it appears on the surface. It’s not necessarily only the small words that hurt the most, but also the small actions and events that occur throughout a lifetime that can pile up to have an enormous impact on somebody’s life. A high schooler who isn’t outright bullied can still feel oppressed because a lot of little insignificant encounters that happen to them, such as a friend picking someone else as their partner for a project. This is evident is the book Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, which is the story of a girl named Hannah who kills herself details her experiences leading up to her death via casette tapes. Each of Hannah’s reasons are single events that, if

David Petrakis unquestionably helped Melinda find her voice. In the first section of the story David, helps Melinda find her voice without even knowing it. Melinda was assigned to be David's lab partner, and it was easily noticeable that David was everything Melinda was not, she even thought so herself. "I have a lab partner, David Petrakis. Belongs to the Cyber-genius clan. He has the potential to be cute when the braces come off. He is so brilliant he makes the teachers nervous. You would think a kid like that would get beat up a lot, but the bad guys leave him alone." (Anderson 37) Despite the differences in traits between the two, there is one similarity; they are both outcasts, David due to his intelligence and Melinda due to her situation. Melinda begins to admire David after he stands up to Mr. Neck’s racist lesson. "I make a note to study David Petrakis. I have never heard a more eloquent silence," (Anderson 57) Even though Melinda, at first does not fully accept David’s advances, he never gives up on her, he was someone Melinda could admire when it came to standing up for yourself and beliefs. Yet he was constantly someone Melinda could depend on later on in the story, therefore assisting her in finding her voice.
“Our inability to love and accept all the pieces of ourselves creates ripples—tiny acts of violence—that have huge and lasting impacts on others.”-Deborah Adele
When others do not recognize our value, we feel discontent and desire recognition, therefore, the demand for recognition becomes a necessity, and can lead to violence and cruelty onto others. As soon as recognition becomes a necessity, each person claims to have a right to it, and humans become savages in among civility. Every time someone is physically harmed, not only is there physical injury, but it is an offense to their esteem. It is not the physical aspects that bothers that person, but the sort of contempt entailed from that
Mending wall is a good example of the statement above. It shows that we all at times compelled to do what the society expects from us no matter what we feel about it. In some situations, having some strong foundation of self-love can prevent us from being victims of societal expectations of us thus decreasing the high levels of hypocrisy in the society. Living in the world today there are so many people who aim to break our self-esteem and bring us down (Maggie & Barrie Gunter n.p.). The best weapon to combat this type negative criticism is to have an abundance of self-love. As longs we have this we are always going get up time after time whenever we are brought down. Having a lot of self-love and self-esteem is not a guarantee that we won’t be brought downtime to time but as a way to always bring us up after everytime we fall.
