The Halifax Explosion occurred on December 6, 1917. It was an unfortunate, yet history-changing, a collision between two ships, the SS Imo and the SS Mont Blanc. The collision ended caused a devastating explosion that rocked all of Halifax and was felt as far away as their surrounding provinces. In total, it killed 1,950 people and maimed many others for life. The Halifax Explosion, although a disastrous event, is a significant event in Canadian history because it affected the course of WWI and people’s views towards WWI, caused the creation of new regulations and rules, and tightened the bonds between Canada and the United States.

The Halifax Explosion was caused by two ships which both refused to change their course and instead created a disastrous collision that caused the most massive human-made explosion until the Hiroshima and Nagasaki explosions of WWII. To stay out of the attention of the Axis powers, the SS Mont-Blanc had not put up its red flag warning of the explosive cargo it was carrying. Because of this, many people in Halifax had no idea what the Mont Blanc was carrying and the imminent danger that would occur if the Imo and the Mont Blanc collided. After The Halifax Explosion and when the Halifax Harbour became functional again, the people in charge of the harbour placed strict rules for any ships or boats coming or leaving the harbour. The collision and the explosion also influenced other places in the Maritimes and elsewhere to put in place stricter rules for harbour traffic, as well as making sure they knew what cargo was entering their harbours, to avoid another devastating explosion.
