Need Many people in Muskegon do not have computers, printers or internet access at home. They rely on their public library. Students without home computers rely on the library for class work when school is closed. Adults rely on the library’s free public access computers for job searches and applications, resumes, college class work, small business startups, social security and social service contacts, medical records, email, leisure interests and much more. The community’s need for up-to-date technology came to the forefront in the summer of 2015 when a diverse group of citizens developed a Strategic Long Range Plan for the library for 2016-2020. The library’s mission statement, the Strategic Long Range Plan and the Technology Plan all …show more content…
-- Replacement and expansion of digital signage to let people know what is happening and what is being offered at the library. Implementation Since 2008, property tax revenue for the Hackley Public Library has dropped by over 30%. Library revenue is projected to drop another 10% in 2016-2017. Property taxes provide 80% of the library’s revenue The large library budget reductions have resulted in cuts of every kind, including failure to make general technological improvements in order to insure capability and security for the public and Library systems and staff. The library has laid off over a third of the staff, reduced open hours, cut back the purchase of books and materials, cut supplies and trimmed maintenance. Funds to implement this plan for upgrading Library technology are available in the Public Library Improvement Fund. The Public Improvement Fund was established jointly by the Hackley Public Library and Muskegon Public Schools for the purpose of paying for Library improvements and major repairs. There are ample funds in the Public Improvement Funds to pay for this technology improvement without dipping dangerously low. (There was over $250,000 in the fund in
Besides be adjacent to a major interstate this particular library is nestled between the Hoover Police Department and the Hoover Recreation Center. The library to address such a diverse and large community is a two floor facility with the basement level having meeting rooms, a theatre, and a box office. While the main level has the collections, circulation desks, lounges, and café. The spacious and large floor plans are necessary to fulfill the needs and visits from an estimate of 79,127 patrons and counting. The exponential growth of patrons is value to understand how much this library has grown to serve its community since opening in 1983. The handling of such growth in patrons would not be possible without the help of the Jefferson County Library Cooperative and the Library Board, which is open to the public. Considering the following it is important that what the Hoover Public Library is for fulfillment of their mission “to serve all the citizens of Hoover by offering the services, resources, and facilities to fulfill the informational, educational, cultural, and recreational needs and interests.” (Hoover,
In Ancient Egypt, there was no way to investigate a murder. Even if there was, most records of King Tut have been erased! Archeologists have been making educated guesses about King Tutankhamun’s death since the 1920’s. One theory is that he was murdered by Aye, his power-hungry chief advisor. This is because King Tut’s mummy was very badly injured.
In the event President Trump’s proposal is approved, this directly influences the quality of services the public library as a whole provides. Moreover, impact educational programs the library offers for early childhood education. Additionally, budget cuts will impact the following: library's inventory collection, information technology, purchases of supplies and equipment (and maintenance) and other aspects of the library that are unique in the community. Equally important, staff members' development opportunities as Ms. Teagle mentioned. Currently, Waldorf West Branch has a restrictive budget and limited physical space to make additional improvements and expand the
Zadie starts the article with explaining the reason why public libraries and being closed. She states that the lack of attention people have given to public libraries "provides the excuse to close them down." This allows Zadie to grab the attention of the parent readers and allow readers to realize that they might of cause their children lost one of their access to public resources that can provide information and can educate them. When I signed up for LIS 6080, I honestly thought I was not going to learn much because I use computers a lot. I was wrong. I found that this course, with the textbook, discussions with fellow classmates, and the Professor, I learned a lot that I can build upon and use as an information professional. Libraries are becoming leaders in new technologies as they integrate new web and mobile technologies for its users. With these new technologies, information professionals will need to understand these technologies, to provide assistance for these technologies, and to be prepared to interact with patrons using these technologies. LIS 6080 is the course that has set the foundation for my future career as an information professional. This course
Founded in 1899, Northern Arizona University’s (NAU) first library opened with a dictionary and encyclopedia in its collection. Located in the central part of the NAU Flagstaff campus, it provides both physical and virtual environments that foster intellectual discovery, collaborative research, and access to technology (Library overview, 2016). As with most academic libraries, the research collections are critical to supporting the curricular and research mission of the university. As of April 2016, members of the NAU community and public have access to more than 670,000 print and e-books, 81,000 e-journals, 161,000 online audio and video recordings (J. Swann, personal communication, April 19, 2016). Successful learning requires inclusive and widespread support along with relevant resources from the library. Thus, the library offers spaces including group and individual study rooms; multi-media production studios, classrooms, and a makerspace. The library’s mission statement confirms the organization is committed to:
The author starts off with a rhetorical question: “What kind of problem is a library?” urging the readers to think about this question as they continue to read the article. The question grabs the readers’ attention, and intrigues them to read on to find and answer. She further utilizes this technique of rhetorical questions throughout the article for the same purpose of emphasis on the vitality of the role of public libraries. Moreover, Smith extensively employs the use of metaphors and personification. For example, she describes the internet as libraries’ “universal death knell”, which portrays the internet’s negative impact on the development of
Duke currently has seventeen coal fired plants located and operating in the United States. Over the course of time two coal plants have been bought by Dynegy in 2014, and one has been retired. They also currently operate seven oil or natural gas fired plants in the Carolinas and operate a total of thirty coal fired plants in the United States. Buck Steam Station is a coal fired plant located on the Yadkin River in Rowan County. It was the first large capacity coal fired station built by Duke. Over the course of time the turbines were slowly shut down and in 2011 modifications were completed. The plant officially turned into the Buck Combined Cycle Plant (Power Plants). The plant now operates using coal and natural gas fired turbines. This
A critical issue facing public libraries is how to stay relevant in the community to prevent closures or budget cuts. In “Looking at the Future of Libraries,” R. Toby Greenwalt asserts that the future of libraries is as a community connector providing users with the means to enable their creativity (Greenwalt). Greenwalt, the director of Digital Strategy and Technology Integration at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, believes libraries should disrupt conventional wisdom of what it can provide for patrons. One example of disrupting conventional wisdom, Greenwalt describes the library as a “firestarter,” the beginning steps of “something big” (Greenwalt).
The rite of Ostara is practiced by Wiccans to celebrate the fertility and life that they have and pray for a fertile year. It is a celebration of the beginning of the light part of the year, to worship the Maiden Goddess and call upon her powers of fertility. The lesser Sabbat of Ostara or the spring equinox is a holiday that awakens spring and celebrates life for what it is.
Funding on public education will help students get the updated devices that will help them comprehend. An example would be “...Technology makes a difference in improving test scores and helping students reach performance goals. Technology also engages students in learning; improves attendance, decreases dropout rates, increases graduation rates and facilitates parent involvement.”
The London Public Library is an organization spanning the city of London, delivering services from 16 physical locations. The library is focused on literacy, learning, culture/leisure/recreation, information and community meeting place. The past few years have seen significant resources pegged towards fund raising strategies, resulting in other areas of the organization being neglected and
The political climate in an influential factor in deciding how far reaching libraries can be in the community it is in. Budget cuts made by politicians affect how much librarians can provide with the funds that they are afforded. In another article written by Paul Jaeger, “Wake up the Nation: Public Libraries, Policy Making, and Political Discourse” calls for library and information science researchers to “engage problems of politics and policy making that impact libraries” which will benefit libraries in advocating their needs in the political process (Jaeger 61).
Central Idea (Satisfaction): If your local library is in danger of closing or being privatized, there are ways you can help them from going under. Some options for an average individual contacting your local newspaper, city council or congress member to advocate for the importance of public libraries.
Being a librarian and one who has always “had a fascination with gadgets” (Hanson, 2011), and a passion for both information and technology, Hanson states he has been working for five years to find a better way to join technology and information. He notes “libraries and librarians have perceived themselves as subject to near-constant technological upheaval and information revolution, largely due to the rise of microcomputing, desktop computing and Internet connectivity.” (Hanson, 2011) He believes libraries are situated in a place to encourage libraries to provide mobile library services. With nearly all Americans owning cell phones, accessing the internet via their cell phones and tablets and major service providers focusing on mobile applications instead of applications for the PC, Hanson suggests it is time for libraries to also focus their efforts on providing mobile services.
