Do you know what Refugees are what they do how they live and how they survive. Refugees are people that have to leave there home all because of war, they have to leave and find new ones far away. Before war happened in Vietnam Ha was different she was sneaky because when she went to get groceries she would by fried dough for herself, and she was mean because when she would hide her brothers sandals when she got mad at them. The title of the book makes you wonder a little by the words inside out and back again, the author Thanhha Lai had a good idea for making this book for a history lesson. Refugees like Ha and her family turn back again when they find better home like Ha she stared understanding more.
Ha’s story connects with the other stories through these traits, when “TiTi Waves Goodbye” in “Inside Out and Back Again” the refugees also wave goodbye to their home, friends, and family. “My best friend TiTi… she waves from the back window… They’re heading to Vung Tau, he says where the rich go to flee” ( pg. 10-11, LAI). “In My, my mom, my sisters, and I tried to escape from that part of town while our dad stayed ( behind at the house)” ( stanza 9, “Children of war”).
Ha has changed in where she lives. She and her family decided that because of the war they needed to get out of the country and go to America. So Ha and her family went on a ship and had to face a lot of challenges on the boat.
It is very difficult for Ha’s family to decide of they leave or not. First they are worried about father. “Brother Khoi says, What if Father comes home and finds his family gone?” (Page 44). Father would be worried that his family was killed, and he wasn’t there to protect them from North Vietnam. Second they don’t want to lose their dignity. “How can we scramble away like rats, without honor, without dignity, when everyone must help rebuild the country.” (Page 44). They are worried that the country will fall apart and without everyone helping they won’t be able to rebuild it. Last is that Ha and Brother Khoi don’t want to leave their papayas and chicken. “No matter what Mother decides, we are not to leave. I must protect my chick and your
In the book Inside Out and Back Again, written by Thanhha Lai, Ha is being put through a lot of tough situations. Her father has gone missing in the Vietnam war. Ha’s mother has to take care four kids on her own, she has three brothers. After waiting months to be able to leave the country, they are finally able to. Ha will change many ways during her trip to the United States, she also changes while she is there. Ha will become a dynamic character by changing and becoming strong, brave, empathetic and also grateful, during her life.
A character in the novel Inside Out and Back Again, by Thanhha Lai, changes from the beginning of the novel to the end. The character who changes throughout was Ha. Ha is a 10 year-old girl from Vietnam, who had to leave because of Vietnam War. Ha had to move from a place in which she was so comfortable to go to a place where things were unfamiliar and confusing. Two examples of how Ha evolved was becoming more mature and finding different ways to show her intelligence.
Ha and her family went through many difficulties throughout the year. For example, in the novel Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai it states “Someone called me Ching Chong” (pg.152). This quote verifies that Ha and he family are having their lives turn “inside out” because Ha can’t fit in with her classmates and she is getting bullied by her classmates. In addition, in the chapter “One Mat Each” is states “Everyone knows the ship could sink” (pg.63). This quote also demonstrates that Ha and her family underwent the universal refugee experience of turning “inside out” because Ha and her family are putting their lives into danger so they can be safe and go to a new
The book Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai is placed in Vietnam and America during the Vietnam war, and the main character is Ha. Other characters are Pam, Steven, and Pink Boy. Ha had to leave Vietnam because of the dangers from the war, and ends up on a boat to America. She has become a refugee and is given to a host family in Alabama and is given the challenges of learning english, making friends, and dealing with bullies. Ha is a refugee in the novel, and refugees can come from all over the world and for many different reasons.
They had to move Alabama they is a war and they were forced to move.the father was a soldier.
I think that the opportunity for Ha and her family to stay in Saigon is going to come more and more difficult and the author's word choice in the writings make us feel hopelessness and sadness.. For example, when “...the Communists crashed their tanks...planted a flag with one huge star.” (Lai 69) This really told the southern Vietnamese that this country no longer belonged to them but had been taken over. The words like “Crashed” and “Planted”really create an image of someone being a boss and taking control of a certain area. This has much in common of when the North Vietnamese invaded and took over the American Embassy. Additionally, when Brother Vu says ,”...it’s better than letting the communists have it.” (60) Ha’s family knows that this option is lesser of two evils and the phrase “better than letting the communists have it” really sets a tone that the communists are going to take everything that families have and this makes us feel sadness and sorrow for their family. Finally, when the “Kirks military mission was to shoot down and North Vietnamese planes...stop the U.S. Marine helicopter, that evacuated people…”(Shapiro Paragraph Page 2
Throughout the book, Hà’s mother’s goals have been to give her children a chance to be successful. She believes her children deserve better than what their lives were like during wartime in Saigon, as seen here: “You deserve to grow up where you don’t worry about saving half a bite of sweet potato” (Lai 47) at the end of the poem titled Quiet Decision. I believe that the poem was titled this because Hà’s mother decided that she wanted her children to have a different life, and it was the pushing factor that leads to her final decision to leave
Ha’s life as a refugee is a life experience is something that only the strong can go through, and her entire family made it. When refugees flee home, it is because of fear that their family will be torn apart by the war when they leave home, family, friends, memories, basically the perspective of the person is leaving what they desired. Then when they finally do find a home, (not all), they are greeted with new challenges, one of many is that acceptance in their new home, some people probably don’t want to make a living in their new home, “But life happens wherever you are, whether you make it or not”. But when people turn “inside out” they feel empty inside and everything is useless, they have to start over from square one and become “back again”. When they become happy again and accept what has happened to them, so they can move forward in life. This book is mostly about a girl with her family who was in a war, so they left of fear of being torn apart by the war because they will be safer than where they are at in the moment, Saigon Vietnam, but are greeted with challenges in the Alamba U.S.A.
In the novel Inside Out and Back Again, there’s this girl named Ha who is 10 years old who lives with 3 older brothers and her mother. She lives peacefully in her hometown in Saigon. Now the Vietnam War has reached her home, so Ha and her family are forced to flee home as Saigon falls to the Communists. Ha moves to Alabama where she will soon face a lot of challenges because she is a refugee, but will soon overcome these challenges. Ha was a girl who was stubborn and sneaky.
Ha, like many refugees around the world had to leave all of her belongings behind. They were only allowed to bring the stuff they were wearing, the stuff they could fit in their pockets, and maybe a small pouch of belongings that was easy to carry. “One Choice” (Lai, 55). When Ha and her family were forced to leave they were only allowed to grab one thing before they had to go. As refugees were waiting to get into camps they were standing in the blazing sun with very little prized possessions that they had quickly grabbed. “...Standing in the broiling sun with small bags, holding their few belongings (evacuees were advised to carry only one small bag apiece)” (Butterfield). Refugees were waiting for hours to get into a refugee camp with only
