Guns In Schools Persuasive Speech

A school's staff are our children's first and foremost defense against violent attacks. Posting "Gun Free Zone" signs has proven time and time again, that it will not stop a criminal from leaving a trail of victims. Leaving our staff untrained and unarmed ultimatley leaves all those in the school vulnerable, defenseless, and in the position to potentially be harmed, or worse, killed. Arming our teachers, prinicipals, and staff will give our children and all else in the school a chance to fight for their lives, if ever threatned.

Teachers should not be armed if they are not trained properly. Police officers, swat teams, and security guards go through years of training to face a dangerous situation. So why should teachers automatically have the right to carry a gun? Their job is to teach, not guard a school. For instance, someone planning on entering a school to kill innocent souls would consider twice before trying, if they knew that they could not succeed. Nevertheless, arming teachers can discourage people from even thinking about shooting up a school.

Over the past several years the topic of gun control has been very relevant. With the increase in crime and the school shootings, everybody felt the need to have a concealed weapons permit. They wanted to be able to protect themselves and their children. No where is safe in this day in age everybody is fighting and angry. The one place you wouldn't think to worry about, the one place you trust your children to go to being "school" is now a dangerous place. Why would someone want to target a school with innocent children you may ask? Because these people are sick. This reason being why the teachers need to be allowed to have their concealed weapons permits and be able to carry a weapon on school grounds so that they can protect our children

Theoretically, if a teacher is not in a clear state of mind and has easy access to wherever the gun may lie they may be able to do harm as well. The teachers are also not guards to protect the building while teaching as well which also is said that some schools pay security guards to protect the school. If the gun isn’t protected well enough children could grab the gun and easily go on a shooting rampage. Adding more guns is like fighting “fire with fire” and should not be implemented due to the potential risks. According to TIME magazine, since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on December 14, 2012, there have been over 290 school shootings all around the United States. Teachers, with proper training and determination to save lives, should be able to carry a concealed handgun in schools. Teachers should be able to carry for many reasons, including protecting students until police can arrive, eliminating the amount of school shootings, and helping the students feel more safe in the school if this were to happen.

Teachers should have the choice of whether or not to have guns. Some teachers don’t want to bare the burden of having to kill someone. Mrs. Frye from Waupun Area Junior/Senior High strongly hinted at to her students that, “[she]... doesn’t feel comfortable with guns.”. And when she was questioned about whom she would trust she said that “My husband [who also works at the school] would be able to”.

The less people injured during school shootings the better it is. The idea of teachers and administrators carrying guns would then be a success.

My second reason as to why teachers should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon is that it has worked for other countries. Israel and Thailand actually encourage their teachers to carry weapons. There was an article in 2004 in the National Review that is about how Israel and Thailand are set examples of arming teachers. The article stated that, “Though Thailand’s government is extremely hostile to gun ownership in general, it has recognized that teachers ought to be able to safeguard their students and themselves.” I agree with this. Teachers should be allowed to protect their students and themselves and if allowing the teachers to carry a concealed weapon will protect them then let them do it. Once the students hear or see their teacher carrying a gun they will instantly think that there will be a shooting at the school. The student might also be afraid that the teacher might pull out the gun and start shooting if the teacher loses their temper. Just in recent years, the debt of whether or not teachers should carry guns has come into light. Some people believe that teachers carrying guns will protect the students, and others oppose the idea because they believe it can lead to dangerous situations. Through careful analyzing of articles, teachers should not be armed in classrooms, because students will be afraid, kids get their hands on most everything, and there has been a long history of school gun violence.
