How far do you think a person will go? According, to ABC News in Toledo Ohio a white man pleaded guilty of a hate crime charge that resulted in the beating of a black man ("Ohio Man Pleads Guilty to Hate Crime in Attack on Black Man", 2016). There's another man that is involved but the investigation is ongoing. It is said that Charles Butler was founded guilty after investigators saw a Facebook post explaining the death of the African American male ("Ohio Man Pleads Guilty to Hate Crime in Attack on Black Man", 2016). Importantly, this topic is an eye opener and depicts the power of racism that still exist in society. As we learned in class, not only were these men prejudice they also discriminated towards the black man. The two men treated the …show more content…
These men not only expressed their hatred but acted out in a violent act. For example, one of the discriminatory acts or practices that was done by the white men was when they beat the victim with his own broomstick and called him names. They beat the man so bad he had a eye socket fracture and a lot of damaged to the eyes ("Ohio Man Pleads Guilty to Hate Crime in Attack on Black Man", 2016). The people that are involved in the incident or not trying to make anything correct. The only thing that rectify this crime was when these two men went to jail. For example, in the article it is obvious the men didn’t see anything wrong, one man even had the audacity to make a status about it. The only thing to correct them from this outrageous crime was to arrest them. Nobody else is doing this kind of act on the regular and there was no protest or backlash. However, stereotypes are being challenged because the white men view all black men as a threat or inferior to them. Also, there had to be tension in order for such act to even happen, this crime had a motivated force behind it. The perpetrator's had a purpose to
On June 7, 1998, 49-year-old James Byrd Jr. of Texas accepted a ride from three white men, who then beat him severely, urinated on him, chained him by his ankles to the back of their pick-up truck, dragged him for three miles into the countryside, and dumped his corpse in front of an African-American cemetery (Graczyk). A little over a year later, a jury sentenced ring leader John King to death by lethal injection (“Man Executed for Dragging Death of James Byrd”). While this particular case may give the appearance that perpetrators of hate crimes receive appropriate punishment, almost a decade later, one particular case demonstrates the inequity in the application of hate crime punishments: In 2007, Sean Kennedy of Charleston, South
During the late Nineteenth Century, The Free Speech was one of the only journals in the country that spoke directly to African-Americans. As an author for this journal, Wells-Barnett sought to enlighten the public with information that was rarely published in other newspapers. In the event that knowledge of these lynchings were made public, they rarely contained accurate information. This journal was without a doubt a nuisance to the southern white press, who sought to discredit African-Americans in order to keep them out of political matters. The Free Speech went too far in a publication written for the May 21st, 1892 paper. The article describes the lynching of eight men since the previous publication. The deaths and crimes are described and doubt is expressed that most of the individuals were actually guilty. The spark that led to Wells-Barnett’s attempted lynching is found at the end of the article. “Nobody in this section of the country believes the old thread-bare lie that Negro men rape white women. If Southern white men are not careful, they will overreach themselves and public sentiment will have a reaction, a conclusion will then be reached which will be very damaging to the moral reputation of their women.” With the publishing of this article, local whites became enraged and took this as a direct threat to their “authority” over African-Americans. Local newspapers such as The Daily Commercial wrote follow up articles testifying to the
Racism, known as “the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.” (Oxford, 2013) When an individual mentions the word ‘racism’ almost all the time it will be referred to a black individual, not white nor any other race, but black. Over the years racism has repeatedly occurred whether it was said or done; some showed racism by the words they used, while others presented it by the racist acts they committed. Racism towards the black community has not only been shown by other races, but also by individuals who were there to keep them ‘safe’. Very contradictory yet true, that a black man’s worst
In fact, they were punished still for celebrating and in occasions without any reason in particular. However, according to Campbell R. instead of revenge, all they hoped was a peaceful environment with their ex-owners and other whites since they were mostly focused on supporting their families and community in general (267-268). Therefore, an enormous comparison example can be made with the documentary since after all those years of slavery they did not take action against the opposite group; however, in Jasper 1998 a group of Caucasians brutally attacked until the point of murder an African-American man that was innocently walking down the street. Concluding that after all these decades, this of many examples demonstrates that despise towards African-Americans still exist within different communities and

This is proof that there is racial discrimination in law enforcement that affects police brutality. This also reinforces the culture of people of color being less human than white people, which takes its roots all the way back to slavery in America. When slavery was still prevalent in the United States, white people believed that black people(slaves), did not feel pain like they felt pain. After slavery was abolished, black people were still strongly regarded as inferior to white people and white people still saw them as wild creatures rather than human beings. White people saw themselves superior to every other race of people, so it was common for them to mistreat other races that weren’t white. This mindset is not as strong as it was in the past but, it is still strong enough to affect the choices police officers make during interactions with people of color. As a result of discrimination at the police level, many people have turned to court system’s to reach justice.
The Klu Klux Klan, one of the most recognised hate groups in US history, was founded in 1865. They were under the impression that people of color were less valuable than white people, some even believing that they weren't human. Something people don’t realize is that groups like that are still around today, and just as active as ever. Hate groups, and just random unorganised hate crimes are just as real as me and you, and they are still an active threat. Hate Crime is relevant, and as a society, we should be doing our best to snuff out the flames of prejudice and resentment that burn in the hearts of anyone willing to participate in such unjust behavior. This kind of activity is not only hurtful emotionally, but sometimes, it turns to violence. Innocent people getting picked off the street simply because of their beliefs, who they love, or the color of their skin. This is something that nobody should stand for, especially now, in this constantly progressing world. All in all, Hate Crimes are a real problem, and in order to stop injustice such as this, we need to work together as human beings to accept people, regardless of who they are.
The article mentions how social media plays a huge part in displaying police brutality publicly. One of the main reasons Oscar Grant’s story was so well known was because it was captured by multiple video mobile devices. Within seconds these videos were uploaded causing a public problem that needed to be addressed. Later causing a media uproar and violent as well as peaceful protest across the country. Whereas before social media became a huge part of our society the mistreatment of black men would go unnoticed. Likewise, the article references how black men rebel against society due to the way they are perceived, as a threat. In the film the young men voiced their disrespect towards the police officers. some of the young men saying “You aren’t
Throughout the country the people have seen a variety of problems with the justice system and how nothing is being done to fix the problems. For instance,The amount of hate crimes against foreign U.S citizens is at an all time high, there are too many innocent minorities are being killed by law enforcement, and the level of police abuse is at a record high. These crimes are causing major problems for the society and its people. The problems that have occurred within the crime and justice system are intolerable and the democrats are going to help by attempting to fix these problems to the best of their ability.
Blacks were introduced to American soil during the 17th and 18th centuries via the triangular trade route, and were welcomed by whips, chains, shackles, and all the horrors of slavery. Slavery was legitimized by our government and continued for a few hundred years, taking a civil war and sixteen presidents before it was abolished. To this day, there is still much hatred between blacks and whites despite emancipation, desegregation, and integration; some would argue that the condition of African Americans in the United States is still one of a subservient nature. Federal law defines a hate crime as whenever a victim is attacked on the basis of his or her race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or
A crime that has been performed because of sexual, racial, or other prejudice feelings is known as a hate crime. These wrongdoings often include violence and are one of the FBI’s Civil Rights programs highest priority to stop. They are at such an importance to control because the destruction these crimes cause families and communities is horrible. It is also believed that these crimes can plant a seed of terrorism in our country because of the intolerance and hatred preached by these criminals.
In this video, it clearly shows that the white cops are harassing the black teenagers. The whites are not even being questioned but the cops are torturing the blacks. One of the white teenager said in a separate interview that he felt very shocked because the cops were not questioning him but they were questioning and beating the blacks. This video relates to the article because both show the inequality in the justice system.
First, what exactly does hate crime mean? The actual definition according to justice.gov is, “Hate crime is the violence of intolerance and bigotry, intended to hurt and intimidate someone because of their race, ethnicity, national origin, religious, sexual orientation, or disability.”
Hate crime affects over 50 percent of Hispanic or Latino populations in the United States. Over the years, hate crimes has increased causing fear, inferiority and physical injury that in some cases end with the death of the victims. Immigration policies, communities and individual immigrants are most common causes of bias crime. In this research paper I focus more in the victims of hate crime than offenders. My independent variable is Immigrant's background and my dependent variable is the crime is not being reported. Hate crimes are more likely to happen in multivariables states where there is a variety of cultures and ethnicity. (Carbone, Rosenfeld & Stacey, 2011)
Hate crimes has become an increasing problem here in the united states ranging from racial hatred to gender discrimination but what are hate crimes? According to Dr. Jack McDevitt, a criminologist at Northeastern University in Boston Hate crimes are message crimes, Hate crimes are defined as crimes that are violent act against people, property, or organizations because of the group to which they belong or identify with.
