Guidance Lesson Plan
A school counselor guidance lesson can have a positive impact on students it is important to understand what issues exist in the school and to follow the American Counselor Association National Model when creating lesson plans. The lessons plans presented are three different ones including harassment, attitude, and stereotyping. Each of them are to help gain respect for the student themselves and his or her classmates and acquaintances.
1st Lesson
The first lesson plan is called Leave Me Alone! Harassment. The lesson is designed for 8th graders and is scheduled to be 30

The domain of the lesson will be social/emotional and the content standards is AA.S.7. The content of this lesson is that “students will recognize and change stink in thinking to a more winning attitude” (Winning Attitude, n.d.). The lesson will be presented by starting off with a discussion that talks to the students about changing a person’s negative thinking to an attitude of gratitude. “The experience and expression of gratitude benefit the individual by enhancing wellbeing, physical health, and social relationships” (Layous & Lyubomirsky, 2014, P. 153). Statistics will be presented on deaths and accessibility. The statistics on death will include children and the death occurring from preventable diseases or deaths that occurred in other countries because of accessibility of healthcare or healthy drinking water. One important part of the lesson the 7th graders need to learn is why the statistics were presented to them. The lesson shows that all individuals endure tough or rough patches in one’s life but a person needs to think positive and have an attitude of gratitude by being thankful for everything a person has. The handout presented to the students in the lesson will ask questions about things that students are grateful for including overall items or individuals, why a person would stop being grateful, what can a person do
As practicing professional school counselor, it is important to utilize the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model. According to the ASCA national model, effective school counselors focus their time, skills, and energy on direct and indirect services to students. Furthermore, the school counselor serves as a leader and advocate that supports systematic change as necessary (ASCA National Model, n.d., para. 4).
I plan on obtaining my Ph.D. in Management with a specialization in leadership and organizational change in four years. My educational goals are as follows: to receive the advanced essential training in qualitative research methods to strengthen my researcher and give a theoretical base to my work, secondly I would like to gain insight in quantitative research in order to become a well balanced
My pursuit of becoming a School Counselor led me to apply to the School Counseling Master’s Program at University of Maryland, College Park. I am a former student at University of Maryland with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. After graduating and teaching for two years in Prince George’s County Public Schools, I discovered my true passion lies not only in the classroom and students’ academics, but playing a pivotal role in the growth of their career, social, and personal development. Although I am no longer teaching full-time at the moment, my interaction with students from diverse backgrounds left an indelible responsibility to continue making a difference in our students. The objectives and mission of the School Counseling Master’s Program at University of Maryland can best help my goal of becoming an effective counselor and leader who is an agent of change to students and service the mental and emotional well-being of the younger generation.
ASCA National Model has Mindset and Behaviors guidelines for student success. These guidelines facilitate what a professional school counselor role is in schools, given 35 standards set forth as priorities. Professional school counselors have an important role in assisting students with their education as they focus on the 3 domains of the guidelines which enlist Academic, Career and Social/Emotional Development. This paper will focus on the areas a counselor needs to excel in, to show leadership and understanding of their profession. The areas include the following having a professional organization to belong to, clearly understanding ethical codes, ability to work with multicultural, GLBTQ students, importance of group work and career development.
The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) is the division of the American Counseling Association (ACA) that supports the development of professional school counselors. It published the ASCA National Model (2012), which provides a framework for a comprehensive school counseling program that includes four quadrants: Foundation, Delivery, Management, and Accountability. The National Model also offers a detailed account of the role, function, and competencies of professional school counselors. It specifically addresses how the proper use of professional school counselors and implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program can enhance the education of the whole student at the elementary, middle, or high school level (ASCA,
The role of a school counselor is an intriguing one because they do not work with a specific type of client. While they will always be working with young children or teenagers, the problems their clients come to them with can be so different from client to client. One session might be dealing with questions about career choices. Another might be about dealing with bullying. Some days a school counselor may even have to be there for a child who was a victim of sexual or physical abuse. It is because of this wide range of demands that a school counselor should be well-versed in many types of counseling theories.
During my time at Shenandoah Elementary School I observed Mrs. Fiol’s 2nd grade class. Her class is an inclusive class. I noticed that some students that seem to be advance still have behavior problem, which made teaching difficult. I learned a lot during my time in her class. I learned that you must flexible because the class must go on, and just because part of you lesson does not happen the way you expected it to go does not mean that you should give up. I learned that while it is trying to create an inquire lesson it is not impossible. With the correct resources and modification any student can perform an inquire lesson. I learned that an inquire lesson is better than the traditional way of the teacher just talking at the students. I also
A school counselor’s role is vital in many schools across America. Many students see their counselor, to work on any emotional stressors, academic changes and challenges. This may include, interventions, group therapy and changes in class schedule, but sometimes with all the implementations given, students do not succeed in school. Perhaps one needs to take a closer look at the programs being implemented and its success rate. In addition, a counselor should guide itself using the ASCA (American School Counselor Association) to provide evidence based practices in schools.
"Guidance teaching is character education in its truest, least political sense --guiding children to develop the empathy, self-esteem, and self-control needed for autonomy." (Gartrell, 2004, p. 22) As a guidance professional, I will have the ability to inform parents about the positive effects of guidance and the negative effects of punishment. If they are perceptive to this and through the use of guidance, our students will discover how to manage themselves, their interactions with their fellow students and with all within the world in a positive manner.
Going into the third recorded session I wanted to continue to focus on the personal/social development of my client. What is going on in my client’s personal and social life continues to affect her in the classroom. The first area of student focus was Standard A, which states “student will aquire the knowledge, attitudes and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self and other” (ASCA, 2004). I believe this standard fell within my counseling model, because we are really trying
School counseling programs are designed to serve the school as a whole. They serve the students as counselors, act as consultants to teachers, parents and administrators and coordinate activities to implement the developmental guidance program. However, in order to have an effective program they need to instill the qualities of Lencioni’s model into their interaction with the individuals they serve.
As proposed by Dymoke and Harrison, good lesson planning is essential to successful teaching in so far as stating, `It is often the case that poor teaching, classroom management and behaviour stem from lack of explicit planning` (2008, p.122) It is suggested then, that thorough planning is fundamental to the successful learning of pupils in many ways. Whilst allowing the teacher to follow a process of thinking, providing a mental practice session if you like, the act of planning therefore becomes an imperative aid for both student and teacher.
In schools all over the world today, School Counselors are crucial to assisting students, parents, school administrations, and the community. I believe that creating an effective counseling program that supports the counselors’ role in education will foster a close interaction between students and counselor to achieve success in their personal/social lives, academic achievements, and college readiness careers.
Everyone is. The parents, given the opportunity and the resources will advocate for the child. The school district for making it easily available for the parents, and for the teachers to have the knowledge of spotting a student is behind or might learn different and helping them to receive the appropriate services.
The educational action plan for such a drastic condition as given by the instructor needs an intensity as well as integrity in thinking for its solution. However, the situation needs proper judgment of it by comprehensively monitoring the situation and its severity. The scenario of a pessimistic school with a workforce that needs to be adopting an innovative perspective of viewing things is the absolute necessity of the situation. According to Fullan, the most critical problem that is ever faced by an educational institute is not the resistance to innovation. The critical problem of any educational institute is the overload, fragmentation and incoherence happened as a result of the uncritical and uncoordinated acceptance of too many innovative measures (Fullan,2001).
