Guccermers is an athletic footwear company that is run by four co-managers competing with eight competitors in the industry. After earnestly discussing, we decided to use focus differentiation as our company’s competitive strategy. We use the focus differentiation from the beginning through the end of the game. We quickly learned that our company’s strategy was a little challenging in this competitive industry because we have at least 5 companies using the same strategy. However, we enjoyed the experience in the Business Strategy Game. We learned what we did well on, and we had been working hard to learn from mistakes. The first action we did is to define our company’s vision and mission. The main purpose is to give a clear direction and purpose
Managers generally consider the rivalry among competitors as a major source for deriving strategy. As explained by the Michael Porter it is a narrow view of competition. A set of other parameters should be evaluated, mentioned in article as five competitive forces, along with industry

A competitive strategy, or business-level strategy, is the way a business used to successfully enter and penetrate into a market (Eastwood et al, 2006), and also, to succeed in this chosen market against its competitors (Johnson et al, 2014). A company needs to develop and apply appropriate strategy to help the company to generate distinctive competences (David, 2007). Compared with the strategies implemented in other levels of operation, competitive strategy is more focused on the competition against other competitors and strategic choices to better attain market share (Harrison and St. John, 2009). According to the Footwear Industry Year 15 Report, B Company came in the last place out of the six participating teams in the Business Strategy Game (BSG). Unfortunately, we struggled with not expressing our opinions in the decision-making process. Therefore, the group could not meet the Investor Expectation Score (I.E.) 78, which the team ended with 62. In addition to this, B Company is not the best performing firm in the industry because we did not receive a score of 100 in all five measures (ROE, ESP, image rating, stock price, and an A+ credit rating).
Strategy formulation has been acknowledged as one of the most crucial factors of ensuring the long-term growth of the business. However, the manner in which strategy is formulated, and most importantly, the nature of the strategy chosen for the company determines its future position in the marketplace (Grant, 2005).
Porter's focus strategy is a mix of both the differentiation and the cost leadership strategies i.e. difference or cost leadership within a small target market segment. For instance: a company should be able to differentiate its products based on a particular target market segment because if the differences in products does not appeal to consumers in that target market as opposed to consumers in broad market, there would be no basis for differentiation and competitive advantage will not have been achieved.

In the book “Good Strategy and Bad Strategy”, Richard Rumelt illustrates examples of success and failure of business management to explain the true meaning of the strategy, and tells companies how to develop a correct strategy and adhere to core of management strategy. He also emphasizes the central role of strategic management as to remind the readers to understand the huge difference between a good strategy and bad strategy. This book has three sections: good and bad strategy, sources of power, and thinking like a strategist. I will be evaluating strengths and weaknesses under these topics. After finish reading the book, I had gained a better understanding of what a good strategy means to the success of a company. According to Rumelt, a good strategy is coherent, where companies pursue multiple objectives that are connected with each other. Rumelt points out that a good strategy consists of three elements: diagnosis, guiding policy, and coherent action. (71) First, diagnosis means to define the obstacles and challenges that the companies are facing, and guidelines help the people to overcome the obstacles. Lastly, coherent action is the activities or actions that company did to be consistent with its guiding policy. Today, many of us lost the focus of the strategy, which results in the downward of businesses and organizations. Rumelt has defined the strategy as acknowledging the main problems and take coherent action to overcome the problems. Moreover, he illustrates

Competition has became evident and essential in the market of the world’s most important companies. It has allowed consumers to receive ultimate value from the goods and services that they are seeking. In my case study this competition is between two companies that produce ponchos for the fashion industry. The company that we are introduced with is named Tela and their running mate, Saira, is the Goliath of this market. Tela is trying to stay afloat and gain more customers as the underdog. Their plan to reach out to prospective customers is to introduce their new marketing strategy.
