The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is comprised of a vast number of cultures that contain even more subcultures. At Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the Gryffindor House, one of the four subculture houses, is made up of a diverse group of wizards who still seem to share the same values and beliefs. The analysis of the Gryffindor House through the Anthropological Pentad allows for one to completely understand the depth of the subculture. The wizards and witches of the Gryffindor House all have a similar sense of morality, bravery, courage, and determination, in which they pride themselves on, and is a deciding factor in their appointment into this house. The students that represent Gryffindor have high moral standards and a natural instinct to always do the right thing and fight for their beliefs no matter the consequences. These ideologies have been exemplified by the founder of the Gryffindor House, Godric Gryffindor, in an attempt to encourage students who have the same traits. However, these students can often be seen as reckless, due to their …show more content…
Gryffindor wizards and witches dress in scarlet and gold, paint their faces, make posters, and wave flags in support of their House. Additionally, to get away from studying, Gryffindor students indulge in sweets and Butterbeer from the neighboring village of Hogsmeade or hang out in the Gryffindor Common Room. In terms of beauty, the students of this House define it as physical. Physical courage, the ability to stand up for what you believe in moments of adrenaline and anxiety, is the beauty the value most. To Gryffindors, strong is beautiful, though there is a mental aspect to acting on your feet. Art like the Sword of Gryffindor is highly valued because it is an heirloom of the founder of this House, and can only be accessed by those who are deemed worthy enough by the
In The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros, access to housing was difficult to obtain if you were poor or a different race. If you were any other race besides white, access to low income jobs and access to education caused poverty. The book takes place in a Latino neighborhood and it suggests that being different affected where you would live and who surrounded you in your neighborhood.
Cleopatra was born in Alexandria Egypt in 69 B.C., she ruled ancient Egypt together with her two younger brothers and son. Cleopatra was proposed to be one of the last Macedonian rulers founded by Ptolemy. Although, Ptolemy he served as Alexander the Great generals, during his conquest to rule over Egypt in 332 B.C (History 1). Also, Cleopatra was a very bright and intellectual woman as she could speak various languages and served as the dominant ruler over her brothers, including son (History 1). Mainly, this gave her the popularity and mystery throughout history
Culture has the power of informing you of someone’s identity. It is said that culture is the way of life a group of people follow, meaning their behaviors, beliefs, values, and symbols that identify them as where they came from, who they are, and who they can become. On the other hand, we know that culture is always changing and adapting to the lifestyle and advances of the present day. This can happen by the adaptation groups of people have suffered in order to achieve a better way of living other than the one they’ve previously had. Examples of these changes can be seen with the “Great Migration” in the 1900s. A movement in which many African Americans moved to the North to work and settle in the steel mills in search of a better life. In Blood on the Forge by William Attaway, we are able to in fact prove that culture can change and adaptation plays a key role in our existence. The book portrays this change through the life and experiences of the Moss brothers and their lifestyle from Kentucky to Pennsylvania.
Even though the modern society hangs mostly in the balances of commerce, money, power, and the combined strength of technology and science, there are still great numbers of people who turn to tales of magic and wonder as an escape from the mundane existence in which their lives are led. In the late nineties, a young boy wizard by the name of Harry James Potter was first read about and proved to be a major catalyst in getting the world reading again, and getting the world to fall in love with something together; these two statements prove the power of the imagination has and still has a powerful influence on the world today and will continue to do so for a great amount of
If I had to describe Cathy as one specific stereotype, it would wholeheartedly be ‘The American’. Fed up with herself, quick to cast judgements on people she has barely or never met, and having a racist, derogatory opinion of the Latino members of her community, equating a majority population of them with the neighborhood being ‘bad’. However, Cathy does not throw done this judgement from a position of superiority financially or socially, having enough cats to make a desperate bachelor blush and not being a fat cat herself, sharing a house and neighborhood of the same quality as Esperanza. These traits epitomise Cathy as a representation of the social constructs in America that anchor Esperanza, and represent a force for her to overcome. Feminism-Now
The environmental makeup of the colonies was crucial in the attraction of English subcultures to America and its specific regions. Farmers had no interest or need to go to rocky New England, so consequently they settled in the “bread colonies” of the Middle Atlantic, which were full of rich topsoil and plentiful access to waterways for irrigation and the inexpensive exchange and transportations of goods. Similarly, though Virginia’s soil was not ideal for grains it was exquisite for the production of Europe’s new addiction, tobacco. Tobacco, a cheap man’s crop, was easy money, for it was in high demand and not as expensive to produce as sugar, and thus was enticing for the second sons of England, whom were unable to inherit much of value from
A full spectrum of social class is depicted in the movie, Gosford Park. In the cleverly written screen play, the lives of British social aristocrats, their lowly servants, and some of Hollywood’s American elitists intertwine during a weekend shooting party in a country estate. The line between playful leisure and tasked work, not always clearly defined, are surprisingly reversed from what one might initially expect.
When African American males who are vastly capable do not reach their academic potential there are not any quick or easy fixes to this social problem. Other than temporary or situational issues there are other factors that have communally taken a toll on the performance and education experience of African American adolescent males (Ford & Moore, 2013). On the mezzo level, he has a negative interaction with his school. His mother receives a lot of negative reports from the school. Not once did his teacher and any counselors make any referrals for professional services in any of his grades. A lot of teachers do not how to engage with him. Often teachers immediately assume because he is 6’9 he is already going to be trouble because
Perhaps the most culturally diverse nation on the globe, the United States is home to a dominant Anglo-American Protestant culture intermixed and alongside a host of sub-cultures that live and thrive on US soil. Among these cultures exists an array of distinct form of living all who boast an identity specific to only that select group. These subcultures exist in a couple different forms; convergent subcultures and persistent subcultures. First, convergent subcultures intend toward assimilation with the dominant society through various tactics to include: residential clustering, adherence to the language, dress, and cultural norms of their native land (Parrillo, 42). Contrarily, some cultures simply do not assimilate. In these cases, persistent subcultures adhere as much as possible to their own way of life and resist absorption into the dominant culture (Parrillo, 43). Among these persistent subcultures within the US are the Amish. The Amish are a sect of the Christian faith whose members have roots in twenty-two states across the
To sum it up, it is evident that Transtheoretical Model of change would create positive impacts in regard to transformation of alcohol addicts while helping them to have positive behavioral changes. Transtheoretical theory of change helps a patient to undergo a series of changes over time as they end up their behavior. The ultimate goal of this model is to ensure that any patient has terminated the behavior that compromises their health. The theory is also helpful as it provides an opportunity for a patient to have decisional balance for their behavior while promoting self efficacy at the same time.
Social Classes in Wuthering Heights Wuthering Heights, a gothic novel written by Emily Bronte in the early nineteenth century, describes the conflict and the passionate bond between Catherine Earnshaw and her rough but romantic lover, Heathcliff. However, Catherine, the sister is quickly attracted to young Heathcliff, so different from anyone she had ever known. As the two grow older, Heathcliff finds himself falling in love with Catherine.
In today 's society, culture is impacting our everyday life, experience and social relations; we are all categorized by our cultural “groups”, but this has changed rapidly throughout the years from one generation to the next. Cultural studies were developed in the late 1950’s, through the 1970’s by the British academic scholars. The British scholars were able engaged cultural analysis and the developed then transformed of the different fields, for example, politically, theoretically and empirically that are now represented around the world.
Many scholars and journalists (e.g., Bergin & Bergin, 2015; Boaler & Staples, 2008; Lareau & Horvat, 1999; Lareau, 2002; Lewin, 2005) insisted that culture initiated and possessed by different groups of people influences schooling and learning of children in distinctive ways. This paper aims to investigate students? cultural capital from home influencing schooling and learning. Regarding Bourdieu?s (1986) culture capital, group of people has been creating and living within their own habitus embedding believe, culture, cultural materials and activities, norm, and so on. Framed by Bourdieu?s cultural capital states, this paper demonstrates three aspects of cultural capital including the embodied, the objectified, and the institutionalized states. Generated within our habitus, these three aspects create us differently regarding our beliefs, thoughts, behaviors, and interaction. I interviewed several colleagues and fellows and selected five interviewees whose data is synthesized and presented in the following sections. In addition, the interviewees? personal and educational background will briefly be presented. In a conclusion section, I specifically suggest parents to support their children? cultural capital. However,
Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people. It is learned and transmitted from one generation to the next. Culture will change as situations and the needs of people change. A school environment itself constitutes a subculture within a larger society. Each school has a culture of its own, like a minuscule society. The school culture reflects the community in which the school is located and its students’ characteristics. This will consist of the values, attitudes, beliefs, norms, and customs of those making the system. This is because of the racial and socioeconomic segregation of residential communities. A school’s culture is formed by its history context and the individuals in it. Each school has a
