The professor had separated the class into two groups. Group 1 was the right side, and Group 2 was the left side of the classroom. The entire class had to put their heads down while the professor wrote something on the board. Group 1 was told to raise their head and answer the question on the board. The question was “Do you weigh more running or walking?” They were given the options of running or walking and had to choose between the two. Group 1 put their heads down, and the professor wrote something else on the board and told Group 2 to raise their head and to answer the question. The question was “Do you weigh more running or walking?” The were given the options of running, walking, or neither and had to choose an answer. An independent variable is a variable that is manipulated and whose effect is being studied. The independent variable in this demonstration is the choices that each group had to pick from for their answer. A dependent variable is what changed due to the manipulation of the independent variable. The dependent variable in this demonstration was how the choices that each group had chose, or more specifically, how many people showed that they understood conservation and how many people did not. In Group 1, nine students wrote that you weigh more when running, and seven students wrote that you weigh more …show more content…
Conservation is an idea that we understand something stays the same even though we make some superficial change. In Group 1, the students that said you weigh more while running or walking are representing preoperational thinking because they are failing to conserve. However, this does not prove that the students in Group 1 are still in the preoperational stage. The wording of the question for Group 1 could be considered misleading and can cause us to perform at the preoperational level. We do not always conserve, and this demonstration is an example of
Dependent variables are ones that change due to the independent variable. Independent variables are variables that can be manipulated or measured. This influences the dependent variables.
What is the difference between an independent variable and a dependent variable? a. The difference between an independent and dependent variable is that an independent variable is the variable which is manipulated in an experimental design, while the dependent variable is the variable which is measured and is dependent on the level of the manipulated independent variable. (page 85) 6. Distinguish between laboratory and field experiments.
Describe what you understand by ‘independent variable’ and ‘dependent variable’ in a scientific study? ( 5 points) An independent variable is something you have control over, what you can choose and manipulate. It is a variable that stands alone and doesn’t change by other variables. Although in some cases, you may not be able to manipulate the independent variable. It could be already there and or fixed. A dependent variable is the variable that’s being tested in an experiment. If the experimenter changes the independent variable, the change in the dependent variable is observed and recorded. For example a scientist is testing the effect of light and dark on the behavior of moths by turning a light on and off. The independent variable is the amount of light and the moth’s reaction is dependent variable. A change in the independent variable (amount of light) directly causes a change in the dependent variable (moth
This factor was the independent variable; it was controlled by you, the experimenter. The other variable was a consequence of changes you made. This is the dependent variable. It was a consequence of changes in the independent variable.
There also will be an agreement where if the subject feels uncomfortable with the experiment he or she is free to stop and leave. If I was to conduct this experiment then my hypothesis would be if that a person can read 15 cards straight in a row consecutively then the person ESP abilities. If the person cannot then he or she does not have ESP abilities. In this experiment the cards would be the independent variable and the dependent variable will be the person's ability to read the cards. An independent variable is the variable that is change or controls in a scientific experiment in order to see the effects of being tested for the dependent variable; which, the dependent variable is the variable being tested and measured inside experiment. In order to make this experiment more experimental than correlational research, scientists would isolate and manipulate only the independent variable and observe its effect on the dependent variable in order to establish a cause and
The Pearl Chapter 4 Small Group Discussion Questions 1. How does the opening of this chapter parallel the opening of Chapter 3? How is it different? The beginnings of chapter 3 and 4 are very different and similar.
Independent: The independent variable in the following experiment is the temperature as it is what is being changed and will impact the overall outcome of the experiment.
Independent Variable: The independent variable is the temperature, and the temperature would be decreased by two degrees during the experiment.
14. Control group is a group that is similar to another grope thats being tested except nothing is done to them. They are there to be experimented on they are there to show side affects of the experiment on the vareabull.
There are several parts to the experiment such as both the independent and dependent variables. The independent variable is controlled or changed during the experiment to test the effects on the dependent variable. The dependent variable is tested and measured during the test .A controlled variable is an example for an independent variable would be variable that is held constant throughout the experiment. An example is a theory that could extend a person’s life expectancy. The independent variable is the amount of vitamin given to the subject within the experiment. The dependent variable is the life span
The research question, in this case, is “Are subjects less accurate in their hypnotic response reporting under more anonymous conditions” (Younger et al., 2005). Independent variables are the variables that stand alone, and it is not changed by the other variables one is measuring. On the other hand, dependent variable refers to the variable that changes because of variations in the independent variable. Therefore, the independent variable is less accurate subjects and anonymous conditions while the dependent variable is the hypotonic response reporting.
The independent variable in this situation is the color of the paper given. The experimental group of 12 year old students is the group being administered the yellow colored paper. The results from this is going to be compared to the control group of 12 year olds who are going to be taking the same math test
Children with ADHD are in need of a group that will help to improve their academic functioning. This group would be important for children with ADHD because those with ADHD have significant impairment in multiple domains of functioning. “The most problematic is academic impairments because children with ADHD will most likely be retained, placed in special education, and drop out of school
Chapter conclusion: Benefits for employees are very important for companies. Benefits for employees include various insurance plans, paid vacation days, paid sick leave, paid days off, etc. Different companies need to establish different benefit plans based on their company conditions. In brief, benefit in one of the bridge between employers and employees.
During the course of the lab, my group did not face any complications. We smoothly worked together and switched jobs often to allow everyone to experience each one. The job of using the denailing gun was exhilarating for me. I wanted to be on that jobs for the entire time, yet knew I had to share the wealth. As I used the denailing gun, I kept trying to grasp an idea of how it actually worked. What are the mechanics in the inside that allows a nail to go flying out of a wooden board? How did an inventor design such a helpful device? Why did he decide it was needed? Were they a deconstructor like us?
