Grounded theory tries to account for people’s actions from the perspective of those involved (Polit & Beck, 2010, p. 269). The study was conducted at Harborview Medical Center, a level one trauma center in Seattle, Washington. The study was reviewed and approved by the institutional and university of Washington internal review boards (Hiner et al., 2010, p. 167). The word variable in research refers as measurable characteristics, values, or properties of people or things that can take on different values (Cherry, 2011). In this study the clinicians’ perception of head of bed elevation is the independent variable and clinicians’ knowledge and their accuracy of performance is the dependent variable. The sample for this study was 175 clinicians who were employed at medical center and they were directly involved in patient care (Hiner et al.). The sample of clinicians includes 89 registered nurses, 39 physicians, 21 respiratory therapists, 16 medical and hospital assistants, and 10 physical and occupational therapists (Hiner et al., p. 166). In order to accomplish the accuracy of the results the study excluded the clinicians who were not directly involved in patient care. Although the study did not mention any thing about the informed consent was obtained from the participants. The study was to describe clinicians’ ability to estimate recommended HOB elevation levels.

Theories are the organized concepts that help to define or understand behaviors, relationships or a phenomenon (Green, 2014). Thus, theories are the foundation of scholarly research and act as an outline to carry out a study. They are used to process and analyzing data and contribute to knowledge in literature and practice (Green, 2014; Udo-Akang, 2012). Theories are used to guide research but are also utilized in a parallel process with research to explain and to predict, explain problems, events, systems, and experiences (Udo-Akang, 2012). In a wraparound effect, studies help to advancement theories through the application of the framework to the research methodology (Green, 2014; Udo-Akang, 2012). The authors describe how the qualitative study was conducting using grounded dimensional analysis (GDA). Briefly the author states that the GDA model is an alternative to the grounded theory methodology. The GDA model uses a systematic analytical process in order to obtain knowledge about various conditions and consequences of these variations. The authors further explain what the GDA model is and why it is beneficial to their research study. Throughout the study the authors do not use a specific model, but rather provide several models as additional information that may help clarify their key points. One model provided is illustrated in Table 2, and this model shows hospital discharge information that SNF nurses need to implement in order to provide safe care. In addition, figure one depicts a conceptual model that can help SNF nurses implement appropriate strategies when transitioning patients to SNFs. Table 4 is another model presented by the authors that displays the consequences associated with poor-quality discharge communication between the patient, families, staff, and the SNF. In the article Nonadherence and osteoporosis treatment preferences of older women: a qualitative study, Unson et al. (2003) outlines a qualitative study that involves focus group discussions. It is a primary source. The goal of this study is to demonstrate that health care providers need to have an understanding of patients’ medication theories in order to increase medication adherence. This study investigated how ideas about medication and various osteoporosis treatments impacted therapy preference and the consistency of taking medications. Grounded theory starts with a question and researchers review the data collected over and over to look for repeated ideas or concepts using doces to group the theories into categories and possibly into new theories (Broadhed, 1983). The sociocultural theory is a psychological theory that explores the relationships between external and internal processes. The theory is about how creating and using mediating tools plays a role in how humans think. It helps create a framework to systematically investigate cognition keeping in mind the social context. In this theory, human development is viewed as a socially mediated process that varies from culture to culture.

As grounded theory was employed by Carroll, data analysis and findings were based on the categorisation of themes. Although Carroll’s data analysis methodology has been deemed appropriate to qualitative research (Strauss, 1997, p. 180), the reader questions whether majority perspectives were favoured over individual for analysis, potentially distorting eventual findings.

This is important in order to gain data that is qualitative, that should give an account of views and emotions. The grounded theory approach also involves theoretical sampling which investigates incidents, and populations, therefore this tells us that the method used was relevant to this study. A theory should then that stem from the data, this concept was correct in this case, as several themes emerged from the results. The data is analysed as it is collected using interviews, or observations (Punch 1998 cited in Bell 2008). The researcher’s methods related to the grounded theory approach, as indicated.

Undoubtedly, there is an unswerving relationship between the theory and its application. Theory offers direction in research, and its application affords a baseline for research. In the following text, the relationship between theory and application and the manner in which a theory guides practices is espoused upon. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to show how research and theory are connected and how both serve as models for good practice in finding the appropriate information that allows investigators to resolve issues and to solve research problems, while also adding to the world’s body of knowledge (Akang, 2012).
