As an author, Kurt Vonnegut has received just about every kind of praise an author can receive: his works held the same sway over American philosophy as did those of Jack Kerouac or J.R.R. Tolkein; his writing has received acclaim from academics and the masses alike; and three of his books have been made into feature films. Society has permanently and noticeably been altered by his writing. Through accessible language and easily-understood themes, Vonnegut has created works subtle, engrossing, and familiar. His main method for doing this is by exploiting a theme with which everyone is familiar and about which everyone has his own opinion: religion.
The fall of the house of usher by Edgar Allan Poe is an excellent work and a supreme example of the gothic horror stories expected form a Poe’s piece. Poe tells the story as well as clarifies his spirit in his gothic work. The story contains classical gothic imagery and gruesome events that gives the story a physiological element in addition to ambiguity.

In the article “Applying Behavioral Theory to an Innovative School-Based Program for Preventing Underage Drinking and Impaired Driving,” it applies both the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) and the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT). The behavior that is being studied is the combination of drinking alcohol and driving among teenagers. The authors collaborated with Shattered Dreams, a preventative program that instills teenagers with the potential negative consequences of underage drinking and driving. The purpose of the collaboration is to formulate evaluation criteria, and help make the program more effective by applying behavioral theories and models.
Values and lessons have been taught in the myths for us to realize what we should do and what we shouldn’t. In the Greek myths, lessons have been taught and origins have been revealed. In Midas, the main lesson learned was to not be greedy and to not be ignorant. By being greedy, one can be lead to the downfall of themselves.
The idea of heroism is virtually as old as humankind itself. Many scholars recognize heroism to be found at the center of virtually any ancient civilization. Heroes of classical Greek literature embody a set of moral and cultural values selective to the mindset of their society (Lowrey). Today in Western civilization, society’s mindset is not so clearly definable. Collective understanding of the term “hero” is vacillated at best. Moreover, society’s idea of what it means to be a hero has become increasingly more and more individualistic. As a result, it is likely that Odysseus’ misadventures could never be deemed heroic today.
Greek Mythology is very well known throughout the world, but did you know that there are hundreds of different mythologies? You might have heard of Roman Mythology, however have you heard of Korean or Egyptian Mythology? Around the world mythology is used to tell stories while also having an important mission.
Stated simply, the word myth, derived from the Greek word mythos, means story (Morford et al., p.3). However, this is an immense understatement; myth is a rich and interpretive source of information. Its value lies in the interpretation of its relationship with humanity and how it influenced, or was influenced by ancient society and culture. Myth has persisted to fascinate people by exploring the meeting place between human desires and morals. Myth uses symbolic characters and fantastic stories to portray the truths and complexities of what it means to be human.
Ares is the god of battle and war from Thrace, son of Zeus and Hera, and brother to Hebe, Eileithyia, and half-sister Athena, he has a daughter named Harmonia and son named Eros. He is one of the twelve Olympians but wasn’t liked much by anyone; except for when it came to battle. Ares had an affair with his brother’s (Hephaestus) wife Aphrodite, this may have gone on for so long because Hephaestus was deformed and maybe couldn’t perform up to Aphrodite’s expectations, therefore she sought out Ares. However, they were caught by the sun-god Helius, who decided to tell Hephaestus. Instead of turning to anger and hurting Ares, Hephaestus decided to get
The animals of mythology are mysterious and captivating, their mystical traits seemingly impossible for an ordinary being, but despite their improbability, we continue using them in modern day movies and stories. Moreover, The white-pelted unicorn
In the modern age science and technology have in fact weakened the power of the human spirit that myths exemplify. Through the ages man has searched for the meaning of life and his place in the universe. Due to scientific advancements and discoveries man has been able to answer many of the questions he has pondered. As a result of these discoveries man has lost a great deal of “faith” or mythological beliefs throughout his existence.

One idea society has taken from myths is that it is acceptable to feel that one person is better than any other person. In the myth “Narcissus and Echo”, Echo would often forget Hera’s powers and trick her into having long conversations so other nymphs could attempt to court Hera's husband Zeus; this infuriated Hera so she cursed Echo's tongue enabling her to only speak the last sentence she heard. Echo eventually fell in love with a man named Narcissus but she could not reveal her true feelings towards him due to her curse. She gave up after his rejection and hid in the woods, not wanting to see Narcissus ever again. In today’s society it is common for a person to think of themselves as being more important or better than someone else, and this is often what causes peoples downfalls. One last myth that teaches an important lesson is “Arachne”. “Arachne” is a myth where one particular old women, Arachne, believes that she is the best weaver in the world, far better than any God or Goddess in the world. The elder woman challenges Athena, the smartest and wisest goddess, to a weaving contest being completely certain that she will win. Arachne's hubris gets the best of her though and it soon causes her downfall. This myth is effective in
Greek Mythology is a mystical and unique universe filled with divine beings, semi-gods, oracles, monsters, creatures, heroes, women and powerful gods with the ability to control nature, all intertwined in epic battles controlled by various times on a gigantic stage composed of temples, shines, prophecies, rituals and even a word for the dead which was called the underworld.
In the Story of Icarus and Daedalus, Daedalus who is the father of Icarus warned his son to not fly too close to the sun with the wings that he made Icarus. Icarus did not listen to his father and therefore suffered a horrible fate. This myth was written to show a lesson to younger people about listening to their elders. A lot of young people today seem to not want to listen to their elders, but if they were to read this tragic myth they might start listening to them a little bit more. These are just two examples of myths that teach some sort of lesson. There is a myth for almost every human mistake. These mistakes are made as much today as they were back then. In conclusion, it is obvious that etiological myths have stood the test of time when it comes to explaining some tangible aspect of the world in our common understanding. These myths hold the reader’s attention with gods, goddesses, and mythical powers only to have an underlying life lesson that show mistakes ending in tragedy. These myths are still very useful in today’s society as people make the exact same mistakes that were made at the time these myths were written. They act as a valuable tutor today and will no doubt be a valuable tutor for tomorrow. As long as humans make mistakes they can draw on the wisdom of
