Cronus God of time and king of Titans
My research paper is about the Greek Titan Kronos/Cronus which are his Greek name or Saturn for his Roman name was the terrible father of the Olympians. He was also the king of titans which were overthrown by their own children the Olympians. In Greek mythology we all know his ending was about him being thrown into the pit of tartarus but we barely know how his beginning life started in the myths, but his defeat the most well known story. In my research paper I will talk about the rise and fall of kronos the god of time.
The Kronos rather brief in comparison to the greek gods and goddesses. In the beginning of the mythological history the Uranus the ruler of the universe and Gaia Goddess of the Earth

She Then came up with a plan to castrate her husband as punishment and so she formed a scythe made of stone. Knowing she would need help so she gathered her 12 sons that were not put in Tartarus and told them of her plan. 11 of the sons refused to do the deed because of fear, but one of her sons named Kronos accepted the task given by his mother.. Kronos who took the stone scythe (which became his symbol) was hidden by Gaia to wait until Uranus came so that he would ambushed by Kronos. The plan worked out as expected and Uranus was castrated by kronos which he threw his fathers testicals out into the sea and his blood formed greece and Aphrodite …show more content…
Another would be Zeus slicing kronos’s stomach open and freeing his brothers and sisters . After Zeus freed his siblings they went to war against the Titans called the Titanomachy which would end with the titans being defeated and the Olympians claim power over the world . After Kronos’s defeat he is thrown into the pit of Tartarus along with the other Titans and to remain there for eternity. While the Titans are in perpetual Hell the Olympians begin their story with Zeus being married to hera his sister and they create other half gods with mortals and each other. Because of the end of the golden age and the coming of the bronze age the world complete forgot what kronos did and was then portrayed as a monster and was rarely worshiped by mortals of Greece. In my research I have learn that Kronos rose to power by cutting off his father’s testicals, and fell by getting cut open by Zeus then in a great war was thrown into the pit of
“The Story of Cronus” is an interesting myth where Cronus eats his children in fear that they would one day take his throne and overpower him. Rhea, his wife, hid their last child, a god named Zeus in a cave in the heart of Mount Ida. He throve rapidly and soon developed great physical powers along with wisdom and intelligence. With the help of Metis, Zeus succeeded in forcing his father to disgorge his siblings. This caused a war in which Zeus had won with the help of the giants. This myth has the theme the struggle for power since Cronus is afraid of his children overpowering him. The novel The Lightning Thief, has the same theme as well since Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon fight with each other.
However when Zeus was born Rhea took a stone and wrapped it in clothe and Kronos swallowed it. Zeus grew up away from his father and when he grew up he wanted revenge on his father. Zeus was victorious in the battle against the Titans, the Titanomachy. Metis, the daughter of the Titan Okeanos, “Oceans”, made and served Kronos a drink to make him throw up Zeus’ brothers and sisters, Poseidon, Hades, Hera, Demeter, and Hestia, they joined forces with Zeus.
Gaea married Uranus and they had children. Uranus was a bad father, so his son Cronus overthrew him. Now Cronus was the leader, he married his sister Rhea and had kids, but swallowed them because it was told they would overthrow him one day. Zeus, Cronus son managed to survive and later killed his father and took over.
In Ancient Greece, there was believed to have been many gods who controlled specific components of the Earth. Cronus (or Kronos) was the Titan King. He was married to Rhea and they had six children: Hera, Hestia, Demeter, Poseidon, Hades, and Zeus. Kronos swallowed each of his children when they were born to avoid a prophecy that he had been told. Rhea hid her youngest child, Zeus, so he would not be swallowed by Cronus. She gave Cronus a stone wrapped in cloth to trick him, and he fell for it. Zeus grew up in hiding from his father in a cave on Crete. Since his mother had to return to Cronus, Zeus had to be raised by Amalthea, a goat, and a nymph named Melissa. They nursed him and took care of the young child. Melissa and Amalthea had to entertain Zeus very often so Cronus
The Greek Hero and Its Downfalls The Greek hero, a national symbol at the time, encompasses many of the qualities and principles ancient Greece valued in its culture. Homeric epics such as The Iliad and The Odyssey explore these qualities and the motives behind them. Through literature, Homer is able to depict the glory and drive of the Greek hero while also exploring its shortcomings. Throughout the story of Achilles, the reader is taken along in his quest for fame and glory, but in the end, his downfall becomes what he wants most in life: kleos.
As we know, Zeus is the king of gods and all listened to him. The chain of command was Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Atriums, Ares; the list goes on. But this is kind of odd because Zeus was the last born son of Cronus. He was born with no right to be king. So in a way Zeus’s life is mythology’s success
They have many children that turn out to be hideous monsters with numerous arms and eyes. Uranus turns cold towards his children, and hides them in the Underworld, which becomes a major theme for godly parents. Gaia has many more children who are Titans, and the strongest is Kronos. He kills his father while avenging his mother’s loss, and takes over his position. While in power, Kronos creates the first race of men, who were made of gold. This was called the Golden Age, and mankind didn’t have to work. Around the same time, Kronos and his wife Rhea have multiple children. Kronos was afraid that one of his kids would rise up against him, just as he did with his father, so he swallows each child as they are born. Rhea was very upset, and Gaia aided her in giving birth to the youngest, Zeus, and giving Kronos a rock to swallow. Zeus grew to become the strongest of men, and killed his father Kronos, and retrieved his siblings. He married his sister Hera, but started to have affairs with many other gods and mortals, resulting in numerous minor gods and demigods. During this conflict, the Golden Men were killed, so Zeus replaced them with the Silver Men the Bronze Men, and the Heroes. Each race was either killed by the god’s negligence, or hidden due to their shortcomings. The final race of men is the one alive today, which is the Iron Age. This race has to suffer the most, but it said to last far beyond the gods.
In Greece and Asia Minor around 2000 B.C. there existed a common belief in a group of deities. Of this group of deities were twelve Olympians who were immortal. From that group of Olympians came the most dominant and commanding God known to immortals and mortals alike. That Olympian god was Zeus; the son of Titans Cronus and Rhea. When Zeus had grown to maturity, he waged war against his father with his disgorged brothers and sisters as allies. The battle was of epic proportions, Zeus fighting from Mt. Olympus, Cronus from Mt. Othrys. This is Mark Morford’s interpretation of Zeus’ rise to power, which he’d argue is a story of, “The Hero and the Quest” (Morford, 76). While there is no arguing Zeus’ supremacy, it is easy to argue his
In the beginning of time there was nothing but darkness and chaos but then miraculously a being emerged from the empty void called Erebus and night. All was dark, empty and silent until love was born bringing order with it, light was born along with Gaea, the earth from love. Gaea alone gave birth to Uranus, the sky, and he became her husband surrounding her on all sides. Together they created twelve Titans, three cyclops 's and three Hecatonchires (hundred-handed ones). Uranus did not like the Hecatonchires so he hid them in a secret place in the earth which angered Gaea so greatly that she plotted against him. When she asked her children to aid her in taking revenge against Uranus all of them were too afraid to challenge their father except for the youngest Titan named Kronos. Gaea and Kronos planned their revenge and castrated him as he slept. Uranus disappeared after promising Kronos that the Titans would be punished for what he had done. Kronos was then named ruler, married his sister Rhea and locked up the Hecatonchires and Cyclopes in Tartarus. When Rhea and Kronos had many children Gaea and Uranus prophesied that he would be overthrown by a child of his. To solve the issue Kronos ate all but one of his children in hopes of changing his fate. The child that was not devoured by his father was hidden by Rhea and was named Zeus. Zeus grew up and made a plan to get his siblings back and defeat Kronos. He decided on getting a potion to make
The first and king of the Gods, is Zeus. As a child Zeus was saved by his mother, Rhea, and taken far away from his father Cronus. Cronus ate all of his children when they were born so that they could never defeat him when they grew older. When Zeus was fully grown he returned to his birth place and killed his father and freed his siblings that were living inside of him. This story is told throughout Greek mythology, the story changes from the original.
Something that happened in the Cronus myth is Uranus put the Titans that he didn´t like in a pit . The text says: ¨When Gaea gave birth to other children, such as Cyclops, who looked monstrous, Uranus was not proud of them and put them in a pit under the earth.¨Another thing that happened is Cronus killed his father Uranus. The text says: ¨Cronus did overthrow his father, but he did not save his monstrous brothers.¨Another thing that happened is Cronus was afraid that Zeus would overthrow him. The text says: ¨His father had predicted that this would happen. In order to be sure that he kept power and the prophecy did not come true, Cronus attempted to escape fate by swallowing each child as soon as it was born.¨The Lightning Thief and The Cronus myth are related because there are a lot of prophecies.
One day when Rhea had gave birth to one of her children she gave Kronos a Rock wrapped in blue cloth and said it was the baby Kronos ate the rock without knowing that it had been fake. Zeus grew up being a strong and
Do you think you know which Greek myths or legends are your favorite? There are many amazing myths in the world. Most of them do not make much sense but if we look at them in a way, they start making a lot more sense and that each one has a different meaning in them. Most of them explain the existence of things. The myth about Pan and Syrinx explains the existence of reed and the wind we sometimes hear when we are up in the mountains. Not only do myths teach us the existence of things, they also teach us valuable lessons. In some myths like the story of Daedelus and Icarus, it teaches us to listen to our parents. Icarus failed to do so and faced the consequence of death. Each and every myth is fascinating in its own way. Like this myth, almost all myths have a moral to in them. I believe that the most
However, Uranus was afraid that Cronus might overpower him and one day obtain all his power. Knowing this Uranus purposely tried to kill Cronus in multiply occasions, but Gaea would always protect him. One day Gaea and Cronus made a plan to have Cronus challenge Uranus and take over his power. So it happened, Cronnus challenged his father and was victorious during their battle and Uranus was left to rot (Bernard 1) "Now Cronus had become king of gods by killing his father Uranus” (Bernard 3). In both Greek and Roman Mythology, the relationship between parents and children are distorted, strained, and bizarrely transformed, because of their greediness for power and obsessiveness to be better than the other.
The first and one of the worst wars in Greek mythology took place on Mount Olympus. The story is about the battle between Typhon and they Olympians. Typhon is the ruler of the mythical monsters. He can take on many forms but mainly he is a “humanoid” form made of the earth. Typhon attacked the mountain to gain control of Olympus and take it away from Zeus. Athena, Zeus, and the goddess of victory Nike stayed to fight Typhon and defend Olympus. After a long hard fight against Typhon and the other monsters, the Olympians managed to defeat them and keep
