One well know organization that is out there trying to fight for the rights of Great Apes is, the Great Ape Project (GAP), located São Paulo - SP - Brazil. GAP is an international movement that aims to defend the rights of non-human great primates, which are the closest relatives in the animal kingdom. They believe that the abuse of great apes in laboratories, circus, entertainment shows, and zoo can be considered as a kind of slavery. When great apes are unable to be release to the forest because of mistreatment, this is when the mission turns to provide the best quality of life and state of welfare for the animal in captivity. They state that in the sanctuaries, chimpanzees are treated for physical and psychological traumas and stress caused
A few weeks ago, I spent a lovely Monday afternoon observing two different primates at the Santa Ana Zoo. I got to the zoo around two in the afternoon, and to my surprise, the zoo was decently crowded. The Santa Ana Zoo is smaller in comparison to other zoos like the Los Angeles Zoo, but still had a decent amount of animals there. Covering a small 20 acres of land, I came across two primates that fit perfectly for the purposes of this course project. I chose to observe an endangered ape, the white-handed gibbon, and an endangered new world monkey, the golden-headed lion tamarin.

14. What are the goals of the environmental justice movement, and why are they relevant to sustainability?
“Of Primates and Personhood: Will According Rights and “Dignity” to Nonhuman Organisms Halt Research?”, by Ed Yong, is an article that explains the intentions of the Great Ape Project (GAP). The project demands a basic set of moral and legal rights for chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos, and orangutans. Many countries have taken part of this project such as the United Kingdom and New Zealand. The message of the GAP is that the animals are not property, therefore they believe apes should not be used for experiment or entertainment. However, not everyone agrees with GAP’s rights-based approach. Frans de Waal, from Emory University believes that if we give rights to the apes, why not give rights to other animals such as monkeys, dogs, and rats? Singer says, “Speaking personally, I feel we should extend rights to a wide range of nonhuman animals” and he also says, “All creatures that can feel pain should have a basic moral status.” In the EU, Jane Goodall wants experimentations on apes and all animals to end. Many people are in favor of the GAP
They are very fast and can be able to run within short distances using the most minimal time. It takes less than 10 seconds to run within a distance of approximately 100 meters. While the animals move around they try to monitor the environment as quadrupedally and monitoring of the environment can be able to take as much as up to ten minutes in any case they have doubts of where they are, this alerts them of any predators. Consortship is a situation where the two animals would stay close to each other and monitor the movement and environment of each other. This is done as long as the animals are out in an environment that is not seen as being friendly. The patas can be seen to be less vocal and they move around in silence, they make certain noise only once when they have seen a predator. The noise or the sound takes just a few seconds as long as the danger is taken away
In the article “Of Primates and Personhood: Will According Rights and “Dignity” to Nonhuman Organisms Halt Research,” Ed Yong helps support his claim whether or not great apes deserve to have certain rights by giving examples of programs involved. He states that the Great Ape Project (GAP) is the main project battling for these rights. There goal is to obtain a basic set of moral and legal rights for chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos, and orangutans. He also backs up his claim by giving of other countries involved. The United Kingdom and New Zealand are examples of countries who have taken steps to protect great apes from experimentation. He also states reasons others may object to GAP’s project.Primatologist Frans de Waal of Emory said, “I do
Primates are one of the most interesting mammals on earth, not only because of their complex social structures, but because they hold so many similar characteristics to humans. Primates are often cited as our closest living relatives and on two separate occasions I observed four separate species of primates at the San Diego Zoo that can justify their use of their physical characteristics and behaviors that may be similar as well as different to the other primates and ours.
Wild Orangutans are commonly found in Asia within the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. Borneo and Sumatra are two large tropical islands that are filled with trees that provide a home to these creatures as well as thousands of other species. Borneo is the third largest island in the world whereas Sumatra is only the sixth. Despite this, these two islands home more than 100,000 Orangutangs. In addition, these islands hold over 15,000 different kinds of plants and trees. The Orangutangs make these islands their home due to the presence of Palm Oil Trees. Orangutans mostly like to build their homes and nest in Palm Oil trees because they prefer to live up off of the ground so they are away from predators such as tigers. Additionally, the leaves are wide and provide them with somewhere to sit and sleep, they also provide food and maybe even something to play with. However, Orangutans are not the only ones who find this species of trees useful. Deforestation is not only wiping out trees but is also wiping out the Orangutan population for human resources.
All films, books and any other form of text have a hidden worldview whether intentional or not that can stem from the writers personal view. This meaning that when engaging with these texts it is important to understand your own personal beliefs and the underlying beliefs of the text and how they are being portrayed and how they align with your personal worldview whilst still appreciating a differing view. This paper will examine the worldview that is evident in Planet of the Apes (1968) and how we, using Dr. James Sire’s Seven Basic Worldview questions, can understand and appreciate the differences in diverse worldviews Planet of the Apes is an award winning film released in 1968. It was written by Michael Wilson and Rod Sterling and is a film adaptation of the original book by
The studies of primate evolution have been developing throughout the years and now scientists are able to compare and contrast between several types of primate groups. One notable primitive characteristic that non-human primates and human primates have retained is the development and evolution of their dentition. Due to primates having long growth periods, scientists are able to research how primates have different dental characteristics and specializations in modern time (Larsen, 2008). By analyzing teeth, scientists are able to determine several factors, such as similar dental formation, growth, development, and diet preferences (Larsen, 2008).
For this paper I decided to visit Zoo Atlanta to observe lowland gorillas. I got to the zoo at around eleven in the morning and found out the feeding times for the gorillas. Once I found them, after watching them for a little while I selected the most active group to go watch during feeding. The point of this trip was to make me feel as if I was doing a field laboratory observation of primate social behavior and it definitely did. As you read my paper I will include what I saw, my feelings towards it, and also any questions or facts I received during my visit from volunteers or signs throughout the exhibit. To put this paper
When Planet of the Apes opened in theaters, few people knew what to expect. To most, the idea of a movie with the premise of a planet full of intelligent apes went against everything they had been taught. The initial attraction was the superb cast, spearheaded by Charlton Heston who portrays Taylor, an astronaut who crashes onto the planet. Heston was joined by many popular actors and actress such as, Roddy McDowell as Cornelius, Maurice Evans as Dr. Zaius and Kim Hunter as Zira. Though the cast may have been the initial draw, the content is what has made the movie Planet of the Apes a classic that will continue to be enjoyed for generations to come.
What makes a primate a primate? A primate is defined by its many incredible features. A primate is a mammal that has certain characteristics such as: flexible fingers and toes, opposable thumbs, flatter face than other mammals, eyes that face forward and spaced close together, large and complex cerebrum, and social animals. What makes a primate a primate is its characteristics. Some of the physical features primates are identified by is their teeth, snouts, eyes, ears, arms, legs, fingers, and toes. Human evolution is a big part of humans being primates, and having similar features and characteristics make humans to be considered to be a primate, but both humans and non-humans have differences.
Tarzan of the Apes began it all for Edgar Rice Burroughs, propelling him into the world of literature with no understanding how he happened to succeed in becoming ranked among the finest adventure story authors. His stories set the stage of adventure story-telling through his narrative efficiency in their construction, capturing and keeping the audience’s imagination (Gioia, 2014; Bartlett, 2017). Although from humble beginnings published as a pulp fiction adventure, there is much debate over categorising Tarzan of the Apes into a specific genre, as some argue elements of romance and science fiction. This essay aims to assess the text to determine how it engages in its primary genre of adventure fiction, and how it may fit in and engage
