Violence and Injustice
The violence that the Greasers use are because of their background. People who steal from stores should not have to go to jail, since they are trying to provide for their family. Also the social injustice that people go through depending on how much money they have and make. Lastly, the way a person is treated at home makes them think that violence is the solution for everything. To sum up this paragraph; violence and injustice is a major key in many people lives.
People who steal from stores should not have to go to jail since they are trying to provide for their family. If you take a steak or a pack of meat from the store because you are hungry; I don’t think that it is a crime it is just the right thing to do for your family, but it is the wrong thing to do because it is a crime. Also, like the Greasers, since they are poor some of them don’t want to work for money so they will steal the money to provide for their family. My last reason is that even if people made money; they couldn’t afford to buy all the food they needed to support their family so they will do something bad and steal and get in trouble. So you see if you don’t have money you will steal to make sure your family gets fed.

Back in the 1960s you were treated differently depending on what class you were in. The higher class had the most money and ran everything; also the rich or higher class had all the power. The middle class was like people that had what they needed, but they did not have a lot of money they just had a little bit more money than they needed to live. The lower class or the poor people have very low income jobs and most likely are working minimum wage jobs. Also, they have old dirty clothes and no power; also that they live in run down neighborhoods. To sum this up it was a lot of injustice between the different social classes and the more money you had the more power you
A lot of changes have occurred during this time. Mixed emotions when it came to African Americans and Whites; deciding whether they wanted to be segregated or not. Voting, segregation, being equals just fighting for rights period. The changes that occurred during the 60s were the goals to fight for the rights of all African Americans, being non-violent, and support of everyone who agreed.
In a place where rich and poor, good and bad are fighting with each other. The Greasers had a rougher life than the Socs. The Greasers had a rough life because they were poor and they always get in trouble by the Socs.Greasers are people that can’t afford almost anything and People blame them for doing bad stuff always. The Socs are west side rich kids who basically can own almost everything.People think that Greasers are bad juvenile kids who always do bad things, but in reality they are just poor people that had to do bad stuff because they have to.
Inequality was a big issue back then, when there was not a clear understanding of what it was. The novel “A Lesson Before Dying” by Ernest J. Gaines was set in 1948 before the Civil Right Movement. It shows the problems and successes of African-Americans. The short story “None of this is Fair” by Richard Rodriguez was about how Affirmative Action benefited the minority making it unfair for white students to succeed. In the novel, Grant is a black person and educated, he is different from the other black people that are supposed to work only on the field. In the short story Rodriguez was a Mexican-American student and during his time there was a program called Affirmative Action. This program was designed to help the minority groups get job
Post World War II America was a society full of anxiety. In the late 1950s Americans were deeply troubled by so many social shifts. Major changes were occurring both internally and externally. They were in the midst of the Cold War, and were vastly approaching the atomic age. There was a communist scare and fear of Russian expansion. Joseph McCarthy was hunting down major celebrities for their communist involvement and the 'Red Influence' seemed to be everywhere. The move toward suburbia and the growth of multinational corporations were flourishing. People seemed to be pulled in every direction. Another change that would have a major impact on society for years to come was the
The 1960’s was a decade riddled with racism and discrimination towards African Americans, especially in the Deep South. Blacks were barred from voting through poll taxes and literacy tests too difficult even for decently educated whites. All public places became segregated after the Supreme Court’s decision in Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896 and remained separated through the 60’s and even the 70’s. Groups like the Ku Klux Klan terrorized blacks, burning their homes and senselessly lynching thousands of black men, while many city and state governments in the South looked the other way.
The 1960s was, undoubtedly, a very eventful period which saw dramatically changed social norms over the decade and, ultimately, attitudes were very different by 1969 then they were in 1961. The year 1960 saw the decolonisation of Africa when British Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan announced his “Winds of Change Speech” to the parliament of South Africa. The post war government also believed that they had eradicated poverty with their welfare system, and though this was true for some families across the country, who were able to buy the first car, fridges and washing machines, this was not the case for everyone. Wages were still very low and gaps between social classes began to broaden, increasing tension and bring about extreme socialism and
Some of the secondary causes of this violence as espoused by Phillips (148) include despair, racism, powerlessness and poverty. Many youths have struggled in despair as they struggle to meet their daily bread. In the desperation, many children were therefore introduced to violence at a young age in order to meet their needs. This despair has brought with it powerlessness that has also made life difficult for the children.
The sixties seemed to challenge basic American assumptions; the value of hard work and of traditional family values. “Middle” America formed 55% of the population, earning between $5000 and $15000 p.a. They lived between the city slums and the affluent suburbs, and were usually up to their eyes in debt. They wanted the law to protect them and their property. They believed in good manners, in respect for authority and the flag. The changes of the sixties left many of them confused and angry. They were not sure who to blame for social unrest. They were the silent minority that Nixon appealed to in his election campaign, and they helped him to victory. They were the resentment and reaction byproduct of social unrest. They worked to ensure their property and found it unfair that the government gave money to the people that did not work as much as they did. They wanted law and order. They wanted a state that provided security, response to the insecurity they felt in face of the students movement and the liberal culture. They felt ignored by the democrat government because they did not benefit from the financial help, house and health security.
During the 1960s a lot of white people discriminated African Americans. A lot of African Americans were mistreated and judged by the white. A lot of people, including African Americans were also treated badly have badly because they were poor, handicapped,or, of course due to their race.
Violence throughout our time has been evident ever since the beginning of our human species. From verbal to physical, one will not go through his/her lifetime without understanding the violent nature of other people. Richard Wilkinson brought up a point that “More unequal societies tend to be more violent” (Wilkinson 2). Wilkinson shows that there is a prominent correlation between income and homicide. Lower incomes shows higher rates of homicide. In A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens shows how violence can flourish due to the inequality seen in the lower classes. Dickens uses violence to portray that a society filled with inequalities can lead to violence.
The 1960's was a decade of tremendous social and political upheaval. In the United States, many movements occurred by groups of people seeking to make positive changes in society.
The 1960s brought about changes economically and socially. The Civil Rights Movement was alive and moving. The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s goal was to hopefully put an end to racial discrimination and to restore voting rights in the South. Clearly the 60s was not the beginning of the fight for civil rights in America. The 18th century in the United State was plagued by hatred, racism and slavery. Slavery affected the entire nation. Slavery destroyed families by taking members of one’s captive to work as slaves. Abolitionists of all races began protesting against slavery. As slaves grew tired of intense abuse, slaves planned escape routes, signals and even songs. By 1843, slaves were escaping
Most people in this novel think that Greasers are a disgrace, but no one notices how badly the Socs treat Greasers. The socs bully greasers and that could be causing more anger to build in the greasers that cause them to act out. Socs verbally and physically abuse them, it’s one thing to steal but it’s another when you hurt someone mentally or physically on purpose. I’ve seen with my own eyes that kids who have been hurt by others or their parents cause them to act out and do things they normally wouldn’t do because of their built up anger. No one knows what happens at home for a
Society has had issues with violence through all of history and still today. There is violence seen when they talk about Johnny and his home life. Pony was explaining to Cherry how Johnny got hurt and why he gets scared easily. Ponyboy stated, “We were used to seeing Johnny banged up — his father clobbered him around a lot. (32)” This shows how violence could affect someone’s life in a negative light. Secondly, the socs and the greasers rely on each other to survive one the streets and today’s gangs now rely on each other too. On page 59 to 62, Dally helped Johnny and Ponyboy like family because he helped them when they needed it the most. This sounded like the gangs now and how they give advice to the people that are in trouble. Lastly, the greasers believe that fighting is just a way of life. Dally relies on violence because that’s all he knows. His parents didn't care about him and with a very violent world, he goes to jail at ten years old. With that, it created a person that lives for violence and crime. For instance, people today still think that violence is the answer to everything. ISIS an Islamic terrorist group terrorizes people because they want their point across. Why can’t people just resolve things peacefully? Humans should speak their mind verbally, instead of physical harm to innocent people. Both in the book and in today's society, people use physical harm to solve problems and that creates an issue of
The years after World War II was a very prosperous time for the United States and things seem to getting better, however, for many that wasn’t the case. Non-white ethnic groups and younger people began to lash out against the establishment. This created an environment in the 1960s in which people of differing groups, ethnic and otherwise butted heads sometimes to the point of violence.
