From Graph 2, it can be seen that the largest age group sampled was the 45-54 age group whereas the smallest age group sampled was the 75 or older age group, which sampled no participants. From Graph 4, it can be seen that of the population sampled, 35.85% had diabetes longer than 5 years, whereas 7.55% had diabetes less than a year. According to Graph 5, the most common long-term complication was Retinopathy (effects on the eyes) with 13.21% of the population experiencing this, whereas the least common complications were Loss of Limb/body parts and Cardiovascular Disease, of which no members of the population sampled had experienced. Regulated diet was the most common method of treating diabetes with 37.74% of the population using this method according to Graph 6, whereas diabetes …show more content…

This method involves preparing the lancing device and obtaining a drop of blood from the side of the fingertip, followed by holding the test strip opening to the drop until it has absorbed enough blood to begin the test. (https://www.accu-chek.com/us/glucose-monitoring/how-to-check.html, 2014.) According to a survey of some 6,600 type 1 diabetic patients, to which 1,895 replied, actual testing frequency was less than that recommended, mainly because of soreness, pain, and inconvenience (Bloomgarden, Z.T., 2002) However, Bloomgarden (2002) is also in the opinion that wet chemistry, solid-phase reagent chemistry, and electrochemical sensing all require a sample as well as a reagent and therefore are “invasive.” It is thus inconceivable to test blood glucose level without the uncomfortable obtaining of the blood sample. Blood glucose testing is also only reliable when used correctly, and as such a number of factors affect accuracy of the reading. These include dehydration, not enough blood sample obtained and contamination on finger site of sample, as well as the individual experiencing
