One of the many themes in Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath is the refusal to give up even when the world becomes increasingly worse, (courage when oppressed). Another book that exhibits this theme is the story of Louis Zamperini in the book: Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand.
