Did you know that school schedules haven’t changed much since the late 18th century? The school schedules of today are designed for the needs of someone during the Industrial Revolution, and not for kids of the 21st century. Education Secretary Arne Duncan once said in a recent interview with The Associated Press, that "Our school calendar is based upon the agrarian economy and not too many of our kids are working the fields today." Today’s jobs are vastly different from the jobs popular during the 18th century, but school schedules haven’t changed to compensate for this difference. The easiest and most effective way to prepare student for these new jobs is to increase the length of school days. Increasing the length of school days will …show more content…
Students are being victimized by a school schedule that is out of their control. Lengthening the school day will give students the education they deserve, and prevent their curriculum from being rushed. Some students may say that a longer school day would cause them to not have enough time to do homework along with other extracurricular activities. However, with a longer school day, students will have more time to do their homework in class. Students will also be able to get help from the teacher when they need help, instead of not understanding the homework and not doing it as a result. A longer school day will actually give students more free time for extracurricular activities, instead of giving them less. This is because students will be able to get homework done more quickly and efficiently in school, instead of struggling through it at home. Longer school days give students the education they deserve, instead of a rushed education that they 'll struggle with for the rest of their life.
School days should be longer because it will allow kids to have a more well-rounded education. Instead of limiting children to the bare necessities needed for going to college, a longer school day could help kids discover hidden talents and passions, such as music and art. Christopher Gabrieli and Warren Goldstein, in the article “Time to Learn:Benefits of a Longer School Day,” explain how a longer school day will allow
Many people in the U.S. think longer days are necessary, however it makes students more tired and less ready for their day. With shorter days, teachers have more time to plan a higher quality lesson. They can add more things to do, or find a better way of doing those things. Students will have more social time because they go to school for less time. This is good for a student's mental health. On top of that, students will get more rest. Most students can relate to being tired during a class, with the U.S. system. In Finland, students get more rest. This allows students to be more prepared for their day. That is how beneficial shorter days can
Along with the advantages come the disadvantages. If the school day started later then the student athletes would have their practices ending later than usual, students with jobs and students involved with extracurricular activities would have a harder time finding decent hours and there would be less time for finishing homework. There are also students that are involved in helping take care of their younger siblings, with the school day starting and ending later their whole home life schedule would change.
Its 3:15 PM It’s Monday Where are your kids? Are they outside playing, in their rooms still sleeping, playing games or is he or she just getting off school. Across the nation schools are debating about whether schools should have a four day school week. Some schools have tried a three day weekend and it turned out well for students and teachers. Students have more time to do homework and projects, and afterwords students would be able to go outside to play. Other schools tried it, and it didn’t help some students that much because they would take advantage of the fact they had a three day week and put off homework. Evidence shows students should attend school four day a week to improve productivity.
We all strive for higher scores in school. A four-day week may provide just that. Students have more time on school days, giving them the opportunity to learn more each and every hour they spend in their classrooms. Even teachers have more time to learn from their peers about their lessons and ways of teaching, so they can improve it to fit their students. A four-day school week may provide higher quality resources, as there are only four days to use them. It saves the school financially in times of low budgets, and that unscheduled day saves at least 1.5% more than schools who stick to the regular five-day week. The mediocre quality of supplies gradually decreases as more weeks spent as a four-day week slowly increase. Students with four-day school weeks had proven themselves they deserved that schedule with their academic scores, which have increased throughout the year. They have better attendance, because they have more time for extracurricular activities and appointments outside of school. A four-day school week may be just what we need.
The average school period is one hundred and eighty days with small breaks in between and a three-month break during summer to ease students’ minds and let them relax. The Board of Education should make all schools in the United States year-round to increase educational time and decrease the loss of knowledge over the breaks. It gives students the same time to relax and plan family vacations periodically throughout the year, but never creates the stress of changing sleep schedules that summer break changes. Not only is it a good way to enhance education, but it also is better for planning family events, positive effects on budget, academic achievement, and could decrease the absence rate of students.
Throughout the last two centuries the United States has led the world as a premier industrialized nation. Citizens enjoy premier transportation, cutting edge technology, a reliable government, and access to ample employment opportunities. Even though the U.S. enjoys privileges envied all around the world, the kindergarten - twelfth grade (k-12) education calendar is stuck in the stone ages. Composed in a time when children were relied on to work on their families’ farms during the long months of summer, the traditional school calendar did serve a purpose. However, lifestyles have radically changed from the times of the countries’ early development, and it is only rational to adopt a school schedule fitting for the times.
Almost every kid in school is just waiting for the day to end, and a lot of people say, why are school hours so long? Kids just want to get out of school and have fun and get exercise. The shorter the school day is the earlier you get out, and if you get out early you have more time to do your homework. And If you have a shorter day your brain will not be as tired and you could lack trouble doing your homework. There shouldn't be any thought about why school should be shortened.
Long has the topic of longer school days been a controversial debate among parents, teachers, and students. In recent years, discussions about the length of school days have influenced states and school districts to change the amount of time students spend at school. The question becomes whether longer school days can help improve the academic performance of students. There are different views on the length of school days when it comes to student performance. The people who advocate longer school days are debating on what they believe is of greater interest to students. Proponents to longer school days believe that they are debating in the greater interest of students as well.
The world is always changing, always having new ideas impacting the future of the human race. In the coming years, students success is where everything begins at a young age. Students are the future of how the world is going to turn after adults that are currently in control of the world. In an essay, written by Malcolm Gladwell, he expresses the idea of having more school days than required. So, the students can learn at a slower pace like “working on a single problem for twenty minutes”(10) in class instead of being rushed through having no time to finish. Having more school days will improve how students work on academics thoroughly given more time in order to help them succeed in their future. “I think that extending the amount of time
In conclusion, students having a later school day is a very important topic. Teens health would be affected positively, and their overall life would be so much better along with getting life in order, creating less stress. Also, their grades would improve, and the future would have more possible amazing ideas yet to
Starting in middle school, a student’s life becomes more stressful. The stress comes from the amount of homework they receive on on a daily basis and the many extracurricular activities students participate in. If the school board were to add an hour and a half of school to each day, the students will most likely not perform as well in school because they will be more tired. I am against adding one and a half hours to school everyday because students will be more tired, they will have less time for extracurricular activities, and they will have less time to spend with his or her family.
According to a report from the New York City district, a school that received funds for longer days fared better on standardized tests. This school had seven percent more students scoring at or above grade level in reading, when two other schools had increases of five and six percent. In math, three percent of students scored at or above grade level in a school with a longer day, compared with one percent for a low performing school and an average of one percent for other schools (Brett 1). This information is one example of many studies that illustrate that long school days have a great positive impact on school performance. The main school goals are improving students’ knowledge and building different skills that will help them in the future. Therefore, if longer school days support these educational goals, people should be concerned about improving schools by lengthening the day.
Some people think that we should have an 8 hour school day. Having a longer school could help
Many students that attend HHS don't do their homework. Most people forget but they also are to tired to finish it. Homework in HHS is 10% of a student's grade. I love to having a high grade but sometimes not being able to finish it due to the fact of being too tired after I get home affect my grade a lot. Providing students a shorter school-day will help them obtain and maintain a good grade. “If the school-days are shorter, won't there be more homework?” No, the way teachers will teach their class will be different, they will have to provide more information in a shorter period of time, but if they do hand out more homework, there is more time to do it. Shorter school-days will give students time to efficiently finish homework so they could
Do you think the school year should be longer? I sure don’t. Well, imagine you're getting ready for an after school activity, like football practice. You get to the locker room and put all your gear on, you quickly check your phone it’s 7:00. So then you jog out to the field and begin. By the time you get home, eat supper, and then start your homework it is 8:30. This is what might happen if the school day was longer. Or imagine a hot day in June and you want to cool off in the pool, but you are stuck at school in a boring class. Does not sound like fun. Just saying, more time in school does not mean more learning. Something else is, more time in class means less time for activities outside of school, like football or swimming. And,
