My goal is to be a Kindergarten through 6th grade English as a Second Language teacher. There are a lot of children out there that are sent to school not knowing a single bit of english; I was one of those kids. Going to school for the first time was already hard enough and being in a place where I didn’t understand much of what anyone was saying was harder. I remember relying heavily on my ESL teacher. She played a very important role in my education and without her there wouldn’t really have been much of an education, honestly. I want to help children the way she helped me.
I believe that mastery of your content is a must. You have to know what you are going to teach because kids are going to ask questions; pulling things straight out of a book will not be enough, especially when you get students that can’t learn well from lecture-only teaching. For example, if you hand a Hispanic student a book on the English language that is written all in English (when they haven’t yet learned to read in that language), how are they supposed to learn? If you don’t know Spanish/English (or whatever it is you are trying to teach), how will you teach it? And if you don’t know how to teach it, how will they learn? Learning is also very important on the teacher’s side. You can’t teach someone something you didn’t learn first.
I think one of the most important things to remember is that one form of teaching or one set of strategies will not work the same on every one of your students. I
The first strategy is, teach to developmental needs. Even if teachers teach to different student’s needs it will all be for not if they do not create a positive environment that is beneficial to all students. Students need to move
Amongst the multitude of educational opportunities that has emerged over the years, one that has positively influenced my goals has been the Teaching and Learning Careers (TLC) academy. My educational goal is to obtain my teaching credentials and eventually get a job at an elementary school working as an ESL teacher. I am bilingual so that was the reason that sparked my interest in teaching students English who didn't speak it as their first language. The TLC academy has opened my eyes to learn about the variety of teachers there are in the education system. Through my involvement with TLC I have developed many transferable working skills like communication, organization, time management, taking instructions, being punctual, knowing how to
One bit of advice that my mentor teacher gave me was I should learn to speak Spanish. I think becoming fluent in Spanish can help me connect with my students more. Not only will I be able to understand my students, but they will be able to form a bond with me. They might think of not only myself differently, but maybe other ethnicities around them. I took her advice and I’m trying to stick to learning Spanish. Rich data can also teach you how students in your classroom learn. Quality of teaching your students could improve if you find effective ways to teach the students. Deeper knowledge of contextual factors matter for teachers because they should always be sensitive to their students and their needs. Children are going through a lot these days and coming from all types of different families and backgrounds. Getting to know your students is an important process of becoming a teacher. Success for you students can sometimes be based on the material that you have in your classroom. Not a lot of schools are fortunate enough to have proper teaching materials. The materials in the classroom should stimulate a child’s mind to want to learn and develop more. Classrooms should also be a safe place to learn and to express one’s self. Feeling safe can translate to a happier environment and more productive activity in the classroom. As a teacher, you should know your curriculum it can help you shape the way your classroom is run, and how you teach. Being a well-balanced teacher comes with figuring your classroom out so no, I don’t think you should know the entire sequence of the curriculum, but it should be widely referred to. By picking accurate standards that complement your curriculum you can have a strong knowledge on what it takes to propel the teaching in your
Another key feature of high quality teaching is the teachers ability to adapt to the different style of learners which they have in their class. Koshy, Ernest & Casey (2000) carried out an interesting piece of research which investigated the retention of learning when different teaching strategies were used. The results findings were very interesting, 5% of a maths class retained information when presented in a formal lecture, 10% retained information when the same words were read, 20% retained information when the teacher used audio-visual aids, 30% of the class retained the information when a practical demonstration was carried out, 50% retained the information when they were challenged to
Being an elementary school teacher has always been my dream. English is not my mother-tongue, so getting along with other children, communicating with teachers, and learning the material was difficult at first. Mrs. DeZwaan, my English Second Language teacher from first grade to third grade, helped me to learn the English language quickly and efficiently. Since then on, my dream was to become a teacher like her-- one who can easily communicate with the student and can make learning fun and enjoyable. In my
I’ve only been able to teach a handful of lessons in my pre-service, but the two core teaching strategies that I have used the most are whole group discussion and student led learning. While teacher led instruction is very important, I find that lessons stick with students better when their voices are being heard and they’re personally delving into the content. I really like when students look at primary materials, establish their own opinions, and then share their thoughts and processes with the rest of the class. This allows students to gain different perspectives and really think through the topic at hand. These strategies work on students’ listening and critical thinking skills which are just as important outside of the classroom as they
My goals are to continue my education to help me be all I can be to provide the families I serve the best. I would like to empower the parent to become the teacher in their child’s life.
Students have their own best way in effectively learning the lesson. With the diversity of students, the problem is each student has a preferred learning style. It becomes undeniably one of the reasons that make it difficult to achieve the best expected outcome out of teachers’ effort. However, teachers try to incorporate various teaching techniques to make every learning opportunity become productive, meaningful, and relevant for the learners.
The last strategy that Wormeli suggest is lesson strategies, which include provide meaningful work, provide multiple tools/ models and making sure the student experiences success. If students perceive how learning the concept or skill will help them do the
A second core teaching strategy I use to achieve my results in a lesson is to have students work together. Students who struggle with the material can benefit from this because they will have someone who can help them through
Effective differentiated instruction reflects where the students currently are in their educational stage and not where a teacher wishes them to be. This step is important; placing students either too high or too low in the instruction can be adverse to the teacher’s goal of helping all students. Developing lesson strategies for students that are too demanding may have a negative effect on performance and reinforce negative emotions concerning learning. Likewise, developing lesson strategies that do not challenge students to perform at their best can also have a negative effect. Some students that are not engaged by a teacher's instruction are left adrift waiting for new or more stimulating material. Engaging students in the learning strategy is the key ingredient in producing active learners.
Many people learn English as their second language because English is used as an international language when people try to communicate with each other. As a second language learner, English is challenging in grammar rules and comprehension skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, especially for adults. The ego permeability of adults affects their motivation in learning a new language. Therefore, many adult learners are struggling during the process of learning English. This week, I interviewed Lily, an EIL student, who has an intermediate level of English proficiency at Brigham Young University (BYU-H). She comes from South Korea, and this is her three semesters here. Her answers to my questions give me ideas about how she learns English, what is the difficult parts in her learning, and how teaching styles of EIL teachers affect her learning.
After graduation, I plan to go to graduate school for education. I plan to teach at inner city schools or in an impoverished country. My goal as a teacher would to serve, love, and lead my kids. I would help lead kids into a better life. I would strive to be a role model and give hope to the kids. I would use my education as a teacher to help serve, love, and lead children..
Students learn in various ways. There are many theories that can be incorporated into teaching. These theories help students better grasp and understand course work. The thing to remember about learning is that it is ever changing. Teachers must adapt in order to accommodate the new learning styles presented throughout a period of time. When thinking of learning, change is a main concept that should be understood and enforced by administrators. Teachers know what works for them and what works for their students. The education 500 class has taught students that understanding their own styles of learning can help better instruct those around them. One can never stop advancing their knowledge and expanding their research. One main thing for teachers to do is to keep up with current issues and events, so that they understand the educational world around them.
I’m hoping to become a private tutor locally which would make enough income for me to survive on one job alone instead of multiple careers.
