Govinda's Journey Of Siddhartha

People never stop learning. Many people believe that once they leave school they are done learning; that is far from the truth. Siddhartha is a prime example. Around 625 B.C., a young man named Siddhartha set off on a journey to find himself. His journey led him through the spiritual world and then the material world, and eventually both; there he finds the path needed to reach enlightenment. Throughout his journey Siddhartha had three main teachers; Govinda, who taught him the balance between people and the self, Kamala, who taught him the art of love, and Vasudeva, who taught him the importance of listening, together the three of them helped Siddhartha reach enlightenment. A friend from childhood, Govinda, is Siddhartha’s first teacher on the road to enlightenment. While still a Samana, Govinda and Siddhartha are begging for food in the village when Siddhartha says, “Well, Govinda, are we on the right road? Are we gaining knowledge? Are we approaching Salvation? Or are we perhaps going in circles-we who thought to escape from the cycle.” Govinda said: “We have learned much, Siddhartha. There still remains much to learn. We are not going in circles, we are going upwards. The path is a spiral; we have already climbed many steps” (Hesse 17-18). He is teaching Siddhartha that although it doesn’t feel like anything is changing or anything is different, he is getting somewhere but it is a slow and tedious process.
