He followed what other said and he did what other people what him do. This lead to Macbeth to become evil and his goodness to start dying out. The things Macbeth did was evil but inside him there was still the good Macbeth there, but the evil Macbeth was hiding the good Macbeth. He sees the dagger that kills his friend and his king. Through this vicious crime Macbeth loses his honor, his dignity and his morals. He killed his best friend and his king all at the say time. He was loyal to Duncan but Macbeth through all that away because he had the ambition to become king. Macbeth is nether good or bad because he lost himself and did bad things but at the end before his death Macbeth found who he truly is a
Shakespeare's play Macbeth shows the roots of all evil, our own human nature. The play is centered on the coexistence of good and evil. Macbeth, unlike any other Shakespeare play has the protagonist convert to evil. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth is shown as a hero in the Scottish army, that is ironic because Macbeth defeats a traitor and he himself becomes one later. Macbeth knows his place in the world. He is fully capable of distinguishing between right and wrong. Macbeth purposely disregards his own moral judgment to rise to power which is again ironic and goes against his own beliefs. Macbeth stands as a symbol for Satan's sin of ambition. Like Satan, Macbeth's thirst for power and ambition drives him to commit evil.Contrary to
Macbeth is portrayed as loyal and heroic. In Act I when Lady Macbeth begins to provoke Macbeth to kill Duncan, he expresses his trust towards Duncan due to his loyalty to Macbeth. This is due to the prophecy given by the witches stating All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be King hereafter (Acts I.3.53). Macbeth may have seemed extremely hesitant to move forward with his heinous act, but at the end of the day he was easily persuaded. This tells the reader from the start that Macbeth is not as virtuous as he comes off to be.
Evil is shown to get the best of Macbeth as he gains power. Macbeth begins to turn away from being a hero and good to the devil’s spawn. Before, he used to be open and let people
Just as the character spectrum flows from hero to villain, Macbeth also gradually makes his way down the line. In the very beginning of the play (before making his appearance), Macbeth’s fellow Scots and lords praise him for his loyalty and noble deeds. Here, it is made clear that the public initially views him as a heroic figure who is loyal to Scotland; “for brave Macbeth, (well he deserves that name)”(9) Admittedly, Macbeth does unseam a man “from the nave to th’ chops”(9), however this is considered an act of valor in the service of his country and his king. However, Macbeth’s loyalties soon become questionable, as he plots to and then commits the murder of his honored king, Duncan. At this point, the audience
With attention to the murder of King Duncan, Macbeth struggles with the morality of his actions. Before the murder takes place, Macbeth begins to believe that the murder will “be the be-all and the end-all” to his clear conscious and would risk him to eternal damnation (Act I, line 5). Yet, the murder would bring him power over Scotland and he “shalt be kind” as told by the Weird Sisters(Act 1, line 50). Macbeth goes off of his ambition to murder King Duncan. The internal struggle of choosing mortality over motives brought forth an intense shift of loyalty to betrayal. The murder caused for Macbeth to turn on Scotland and only care for his own selfish motives. The betrayal causes for the play to become horrific and have a double meaning. Macbeth must put on a face to hide his murder to become the king. The double meaning is how Macbeth looks like a hero to all of Scotland, but only the people on the inside know of his horrific actions. He had to murder to to get the position of King, but the
There is a constant war waging between good and evil in everyday life. It may be a war between two fractions that feel they are both in the right or an internal battle of good and evil. In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth the titular character and his wife are battling against the true nature of themselves and in each other. Although they are known and seen by others as virtuous, their unsatisfactory greed and ambition lead both characters to become immoral.
In the play Macbeth by Shakespeare I found at the beginning the character Macbeth was a portrayed as a noble, honest and brave man. As said by the captain in the second scene, ‘For brave Macbeth – well he deserves that title’ (I.2.16). This gives the audience an indication that Macbeth was highly respected by the king’s men and the king himself. His desire for power grew throughout the play from when he had his first encounter with the witches.
Throughout the play his character shows constant changes in his humanity. Numerous times in the play he shows both his immoral and virtuous sides, usually in the form of his conscience. His inner struggle is immediately evident in the first scene, when we are given two seemingly contradictory impressions of Macbeth. The first is created by the witches in the initial scene; the fact that they speak of him, mars our previously untainted opinion of him. His character is blemished simply through his brief association with the witches - "There to meet with Macbeth".
In this essay I will look at the ways that Shakespeare has contrasted evil with good in his play Macbeth. The play revolves around the bad and wicked qualities in human nature, but Shakespeare also contrasts this evil with the power of good. This contrast between good and evil is a recurring theme throughout Macbeth.
In this good vs evil evidence it proves the pure good in Macbeth. It shows his loyalty and honor towards Duncan. “The service and the loyalty I owe, In doing it, pays itself. Your Highness’ part Is to receive our duties” (act I scn iV lns 22-24.) In this example of good vs evil, Macbeth is stating that whatever the king feels needs to be accomplished he will do anything in his power to get it done and repay him for his loyalty. This is showing that Macbeth’s character is nowhere near evil and wicked just yet and becoming king has not yet even controlled his mind. Exactly after stating that Macbeth then says, “by doing everything Safe toward your love and honor” (act I scn iV lns 26-27.) In this example, Macbeth is following up on his loyalty with Duncan by telling him he wants everything done for him safe and effectively because at the moment he felt that’s what Duncan deserved until his mental and physical character started
No one is one hundred percent good or bad, but everyone has a good and evil sides that can be controlled if the distinction between right and wrong is made. The uncontrolled ambition of Lady Macbeth that made her become evil and the deep regret that she had after the evil act was committed show that everyone has a good and an evil sides. Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, introduces three main areas on how someone’s character can vary between good and evil when ambition is not controlled by morality. These include strong desire will lead you to become evil, heavy conscience
Macbeth’s good nature is increasingly defeated by one of his major flaws-ambition. His ambition and desire to become king leads
In the beginning of the play Macbeth is known as good, he is a noble man and does what he is told. The townspeople all have great things to say about him they state, “Conduct me to mine host: we love him highly and shall continue our graces towards him” (18, Act 1, scene 6). He is known for being loyal to King Duncan. Macbeth is then forced by his wife to kill Duncan and his decision changes him. Macbeth has an internal battle over whether he should listen to his wife or do what is morally right. When Macbeth decides that he has to
Good and Evil can be interpreted many different ways when it comes to the play of Macbeth. It is an evident struggle with many characters that they deal with throughout the scenes. Macbeth seems to struggle with it the most or it is just the most evident with him, while Lady Macbeth also visibly struggles with it.
Macbeth is without a doubt a play about evil. The play revolves around the bad and wicked qualities in human nature, but Shakespeare also contrasts this evil with the power of good. In this essay I will explore the ways in which Shakespeare contrasted good and evil in Macbeth.
