In Rikki Tikki-Tavi, I think the primary theme is good versus evil. If we look at the story from a postcolonialism perspective, you will see the symbolism of what each character represents. The cobras represent the rebel Indians, while Rikki Tikki represents a British soldier-hero of sorts. The author was born in British India, eight years after the Indian Rebellion. As a child, he probably heard stories, that would later inspire him.
