Off the coasts of southwest Florida about one - hundred feet below the surface a
dozen huge creatures patrol the depths. These elusive creatures is called the
Goliath Grouper. They gather around shipwrecks to socialize and feed. This giant
can reach 800 pounds and over 8 feet in length. The Florida record is a 680-pound
goliath grouper caught off Fernandina Beach in 1961. Goliath grouper, formerly
called jewfish, are the largest fish in the western north Atlantic grouper family.
Ranging from the subtropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico down
to the Caribbean and Brazil, they prefer structure like inshore reefs, wrecks, rock
ledges and patch reefs in depths less than 150 feet. Goliath can live nearly 40
In paragraph seven of the Florida Waters Treasure Hunting article it tells about, Mel Fisher, a treausure hunter in the early 1960s, used a method called the mailbox system. Using a big metal tube that was bent 90 degrees, it fit near the propeller. Jets would blow a strong current of water towards the ocean floor, blowing away sand and revealing anything under it.
penetrated the water column up to 7 m during the day, and was generally low at night (Fig. 4).
Beginning and advanced snorkelers find underwater life inspiring. Three areas provide choice to visitors. First, the clear water of the shallow lagoon offers experience and safety for beginners and the timid. Second, the Inlet with its strong current and rocky line remains popular and challenging. Finally, Monster Hole drops to 30 feet deep 30 to 40 yards off the jetty for experienced snorkelers.
A species of fish have taken over the warm coastal waters of Florida. This detrimental species consumes anything in its path, causing harm to numerous species of fish. The culprit is none other than the Goliath Grouper. The Goliath Grouper needs an open harvest season in order to help diminish this increasingly chaotic fish, which wreaks havoc on natural and artificial reef structures.
What is 23 feet long and weighs up to 200 pounds. Burmese pythons, these pythons are taking over the everglades and drawing novices to hunt them from all over. They are affecting the everglades negatively,we need to do something about this now.
Your time is extremely valuable, and there never seems to be quite enough of it. With only 24 hours in a day, getting all the little things done can leave you with little time left at your discretion.
The Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center is a local educational center for lovers of marine life. Located on Hutchinson Island in Stuart, it offers educational programs for visitors and manages an abundance of its own research programs. The center also possesses restoration programs that aid in creating healthy costal ecosystems.
It is a very common photosynthetic dinoflagellate found year round in the Gulf of Mexico. These dinoflagellates have two whip like appendages that enable them to propel themselves through the open water. K. brevis thrive in warm waters with high salinity. The Gulf of Mexico meets these conditions perfectly which is where there is such an abundance of K. brevis in the area. The region where K. brevis blooms the most is along the West Florida Shelf, extending from Key West all the way to the Panhandle coast in the North. In this region, there is discharge from several rivers and coastal upwelling will often occur (Li and Weisberg, 1999). The currents in this area are influenced by win and tides, and the Continental Shelf contributes to the circulation. This zone is a shallow ecosystem that has a wide variety of communities and sections. These include mangroves, seagrass banks, and coral barrier reeds. This area is very diverse and serves the economy in more ways than one. It is important for commercial fishing and for tourism. It is important that the water quality remains in good condition because it is in this area that the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, and the Everglades National Park are located. Blooming season in these regions typically begins around August and will last all the way through to early Spring, around March. More than 80% of K. brevis blooms have taken place in
I’ve never been the kid to have a lot of friends, but my all time favorite friend is Shauna Golec. Shauna is my best friend because I can talk to her about anything. Shauna and I have known each other for close to four years now, we weren't best friends until last year. Shauna tries to help me in every way possible, and every problem I have. When I was getting bullied Shauna was the one that helped me and actually the only one that helped me. Shauna’s friendship is important because with out her I don't know what I would do. My mom is always busy and my step parents don't really help me. My dad is the only family member that I can talk to, but I rarely get to see him anymore. So the only person left is Shauna. The qualities that make this friendship

5. The First World War and Anka Stalherm: Joseph Goebbels was seventeen when World War One started. He desperately wanted to sign-up for the German Army but was rejected for health reasons due to his physical disability. He was rejected because they considered his height (he was under five feet tall) and his clubfoot as disabilities ("Joseph Goebbels." People of the Holocaust). “Throughout his life, Goebbels suffered from what he regarded as the stigma of being unable to serve his country in time of war. He was always conscious of his deformity and physical inadequacy”. Because he could not serve as a soldier, he decided to focus on his studies and enrolled at the University of Bonn in 1917 (Snyder, Louis L). Two months later, he was called
Everyone is part of a dominant or subordinate group. Both groups are similar because they label the targeted group. However, both groups are completely different from each other. The dominant groups distinguish people who are privileged, while subordinate is for people who are underprivileged. As I reflected on my past I discovered I was part of a subordinate do to my ethnicity and dominant group because of my sexuality. Being a heterosexual Mexican women comes with some costs and benefits.
The movie I have chosen is The Book of Eli. This was a highly rated movie and made 157.1 million at the box office and won an award called the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture. The movie is about a man named Eli played by Denzel Washington, we watch as Eli journeys across a waste land as a lone wolf. While watching the movie we see Eli walk across a ruined landscape. One review named Roger Ebert a well-known American film critic who passed away in 2013 states “It grips your attention, and then the end throws in several WTF! Moments, which are a bonus. They make everything in the entire movie impossible and incomprehensible—but, hey, WTF.” One thing comes to mind when I watched the movie The Book of Eli after reading The War of the
What makes something invasive? Is it when the object takes over? When it reproduces to a great extent? When it takes over all of your space? These are all aspects of an "invasive" thing. Invaders cause other tiny problems along the path of their destruction that can be difficult to control. In Mark Sanchez's, "The Invaders," and Aaron Hartman's, "Kudzu: From Pretty Vine to Invasive Pest", two plants, the milfoil and kudzu, are taking over. These invasive weeds have more than just being invasive in common with each other, they also share a hand full of dissimilarities. These plants have gobs of similarities and differences between each other.
Egyptian civilization began over 5,000 years ago and is one of the oldest and most advanced civilizations of all time. The Egyptians created religion and rules which founded the way of life for the people of that time. They adapted their own views of what life after death was like and they had a strong belief in immortality, believing that their life on earth was only one aspect of their eternal journey. Due to their strong belief in the afterlife, the ancient Egyptians established funerary practices for each person who died, these practices varied depending on their social class and wealth. From everyday people being buried in a simple religious way, to the pharaohs and wealthy being buried elaborately. The way in which each individual was buried all depended on their social class and wealth and was a huge part of their everyday life for people living in ancient Egypt.
