1) What is the “Golden Era of Consumption”?
The “Golden Era of Consumption” is a key aspect in the story of stuff. This era, began after World War II and is highly protected and promoted by the government. The primary way individuals are analyzed is based on how much each individual contributes to the golden era of consumption. This era highlights the idea of consumption for each individual and began when the government wanted to amp up the economy. Here, things began to be intentionally designed to have a short lifespan, therefore increasing the rate of consumption.
Additionally, they started using things like advertisements to make people feel bad about what they own in comparison to other individuals. This then makes them buy more items,

When I am debating buying an item, I am influenced by social media and my peers. Social media, such as online reviews or trial videos of products, either emphasizes my want or decreases my want of that product. My peers tend to impact what brand of an item I buy, for instance if i'm trying to buy a new wallet and all my friends have Michael Kors wallets i'll be more inclined to buy a Michael Kors wallet.
2) List the last five products you purchased that were not food or drink (can be clothes, electronics, etc.). Why did you buy each one of these products? Please elaborate: if you needed it, why did you need it? If you wanted it, why did you want it?
Five products I have purchased recently are, a romper, a pair of sandals, sport shorts, a screen cleaner for my computer and a Saint Patrick's day necklace. The romper was a want, as I own many summer rompers, because I purely wanted something new and cute in my wardrobe. The sport shorts were a need because in order to consistently work out I need to have a certain number of athletic clothing available to me. The pair of sandals were a want because I thought they would be fun to have over spring break. The screen cleaner for my computer was a need, in order to successful do my homework I need to be able to clearly read my computer screen. Lastly, the Saint Patrick’s day necklace was a want, I bought it strictly because I thought it would look cute to wear at the

The difference between a want and a need is, a need is something that you could potentially die without (like water or shelter), while a want is something that an individual desires to have (regardless if it is obtainable, for example a Ferrari).
4) Consumption habits include both spending habits and one’s personal habits of usage of products/material items - such as the number of paper towels one uses in the restroom, choices around food, clothing, personal hygiene items, etc. List 3 positive and 3 negative consumption habits someone might have. Explain.
Positives:
Only order a portion size you know you can eat. Therefore, limiting the amount of wasted food.
Turning off the water while brushing their teeth or limiting shower time. Therefore, conserving more water and not being wasteful.
Using products till the last drop. This means squeezing the tube of toothpaste until there's absolutely nothing left. Decreasing the amount of wasted products.
Negatives:
Going shopping without a specific list, therefore leaving room to buy things you don't necessarily need.
Using bottled water instead of reusable water bottles. This creates more waste and puts harmful products into the

From 1870 to 1900 era was called the Gilded Age, a time of immense growth in the United States in transportation, especially in railroads, American workers were paid higher wages than their peers in Europe. In this thirty year span the United States saw twelve million immigrants pass through her golden doors, 70% of these immigrants were English, Irish, and German. Crop failures (potato famine in Ireland), job shortages, and religious freedom were the motivations behind many immigrating to America. Newly arrived immigrants faced a harsh reality in America, employers took advantage of them, the men were often paid less than other native born men and the women were paid even less. Immigrants suffered verbal and physical abuse from employers and other employees because they were different. While researching my Italian heritage I learned that Italians, especially southern Italians were not treated well because they were hired as strikebreakers or scabs by mining and railroading companies. They were called derogatory names such as "dagoes or guineas". Newspapers of the time said the southern Italians were "intellectually inferior and having criminal tendencies" (Laura Teddy Turner, Demand Media n.d.) http://www.emmigration.info/us-immigration-tv
The American Society could currently be in what is considered a Golden Age with all of the advancements that are being made daily. America is the number one leader in advancements in the modern day. America has been making useful advancements since around the 40s, but in the past decade, americans have been creating so many different things that help out our society, many other countries have been struggling to keep up. America has made many educational, artistic, economic, political, medical, social, humanitarian, and technological advancements in the past decade.

The Gilded Age was a time in American history, from the 1870s to the 1890s, which ostensibly characterized the country based on its economic and technological advancements. However this era’s development served as a mere facade for the corruption and classism which occurred during the time. From economic manipulation to immorality in politics, the Gilded Age is best characterized by the unscrupulous nature of individuals who sought to attain superficial success.
Preceding the Progressive Era, the Gilded Age showcased a vast number of changes in the industrial, economic, political, and social aspects of developing America. These changes, such as the rise of competitive industries, the continuous diverge of social and economic classes, and government authority, were issues carried into the early 20th century. Resulting from these issues were those that emerged, causing a reform movement, the Progressive Era. These leaders included Woodrow Wilson, incumbent President William Howard Taft, Theodore Roosevelt, and Eugene V. Debs. These candidates in the Presidential Election of 1912 campaigns were dominated by the reform efforts. While the candidates had the similar desire to reform the nation, their plans contrasted in the aspects of the limitations of the government, control over businesses in accordance with the economy, and civil rights and service for the people.
Basic needs often influence my purchasing decisions. If we are running low on food, toilet paper, and other necessities, I put a higher emphasis on purchasing those items. I also think my peers and social media influence my purchasing decisions. I often see a product or piece of clothing online, such as on Facebook or Instagram and begin to want that item. Also, if my friends and I make plans for dinner or social events we like to get an outfit for that event, which is unnecessary as
The Gilded Age was a time of reconstruction and change for most white Americans, but as for African Americans, the Gilded Age was full of inequality and discrimination. Many groups and individuals attempted to make changes for black Americans but few were successful. Though it was not until the Progressive Era that racial segregation started gaining attention and African Americans, as well as those who wanted them to be treated equally, began making changes and their fight against racial segregation began to improve.
A successful economy is perhaps the most key ingredient leading to a successful nation. An economy is a delicate balance of many different conflicting and coexisting elements. Naturally, an economy's success can often be measured by the amount of wealth is contains, not to mention the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of its distribution of the wealth. Effective distribution of wealth is no easy feat. Wealthy and poor people will always need to coexist- this is an inescapable truth. The government's job in many cases becomes that of a referee. Naturally, perfect peace and harmony between to totally different classes would be a utopia, and probably will never be completely achieved. A government must, therefore, regulate economy so that one
As an individual, Brand name heavily influences my purchasing decisions. I am usually aware of current trends and popular brands and have a tendency to select these products. It applies specially to my selection of clothes and shoes. I believe this is due to very strong and present marketing campaigns from brands such as, Nike, Adidas ECT. As well as the influence of peers.

Today I would like to explain the need for better eating habits, the solution to the growing problem, and the benefits of healthy eating.
Following the end of World War II, the American economy found its way out of depression. Wartime production aided the economy and spiked the country’s spending power. From the late 1940s, people have been accustomed to spending the money they have on everything they want and need. People then started to figure out and believe that this type of spending, consumerism, improved the economy. The items that were being bought were also different than they were before. “At war's end, the items people most desired included televisions, cars, washing machines, refrigerators, toasters, and vacuum cleaners: the machines that would help
Preserving the natural world starts with conserving water. Taking a fifteen minute shower can use around forty gallons of water, flushing the toilet uses twenty gallons of water, and a leaky faucet can waste ten gallons of water in a day. Individuals can conserve water by taking a quicker shower. Taking a bath may feel as if it saves water, but actually it takes about 70 gallons of water to fill a bathtub, so showers are generally the more water-efficient way to bathe. (National Geographic) It feels nice to stay in the warm shower and wash your long day off, but conserving water is more important. Flushing the commode is ‘wasteful’ as well. One flush uses around three and half gallons of water. (National Geographic) While in the bathroom, another tip in conserving water is, do not leave the faucet on while brushing your teeth. Turn it off while
