Golden Age: The Netherlands

The Second Industrial Revolution, also known as the “Gilded Age,” was a time period after reconstruction to World War I. This period was a time when new technologies helped bring about urbanization and make it possible for innovations in technology. It was also a time when many monopolies came about in the United States economy. Some of the major industries that came about was oil, railroads, finance, and most importantly steel. These industries were mainly dominated by one large company, or a monopoly, that was about to control prices on these materials. The owners of these monopolies were extremely rich men, and while monopolies are now considered illegal, back then, they weren’t.

The 1938 film, “Mamele,” directed by Joseph Green and Konrad Tom is musical comedy-drama that portrays the life of Havche, a dutiful daughter who keeps her family intact after their mother’s death. Havche spends her day cleaning the house and providing food for her family members. She is so caught up on doing household chores that she has little time for herself. More importantly, the film emphasizes on Havche and her family, as she tries to be the mother and take care of her family. Throughout the movie, we witness the struggles Havche overcomes by not being appreciated for the sacrifices she makes. the gilded age, as coined by mark twain, is a term describing the glossy surface but retched core of late nineteenth century america. this scathing euphemism stems from the literary definition of the word gilded, which describes an object as being coated with golf leaf or paint, much like 1890's America. in this way, the Chicago world's fair of 1893 as described by Erik Larson proves to be a shockingly accurate metaphor for the time period it occurs in. the fair itself turns out to be a magnanimous success, marked by its dazzling achievements in technology and overall splendor. however, the corruption, extortion, and overall evil that it took to make the fair happen is much akin the politics and economic practices of gilded age corporations.

Military strategy forever had been battles of attrition, men throwing themselves at each other until a winner was determined, this form of battle was replaced in Europe during the 16th and 17th century. The change in military strategy took place mostly in Europe, and the countries at the forefront of this were the Swedish empire and the Netherlands. The Swedes and Dutch changed many military strategies and practices which were in place for thousands of years and changed the standard for militaries. They helped to show the first realistic application of David versus Goliath, using smart tactics paired with a smaller army to destroy militaries of greater size. The two smallest nations in Europe took control and led the world in military innovations in the 16th and 17th century through competition and loss. The Swedes and Dutch managed to create fluid militaries which were able to overpower larger armies through deception and agility. The Swedish and Dutch nations during the 16th and 17th century gained military strength through the reformation of tactics, reorganization of the military, improvisation of weapons, and as a result changed the image and action of the military forever. The idea of a military revolution was first explored by a man named Michael Roberts in the 1950s. Roberts said that if the Swedish Empire and the Netherlands had not developed as they did, military strategy and organization would have not evolved for much later.

The Gilded Age (1869-1896), cynically named so by Mark Twain, was a time of industrial growth and underwhelming political movement. After Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant, the Union’s top general, was elected President of the United States during the 1868 election. Grant himself really wasn’t cut out to be a politician, however, with the support of the Republicans and the campaign slogan “let us have peace” that resonated with the still war scarred nation he won. Other one liners such as “vote as you shot” and waving the bloody shirt, or reminding the public the gruesome war they just finished, were commonly used to rally citizens behind the Republican candidate.

The Gilded Age was a time in American history, from the 1870s to the 1890s, which ostensibly characterized the country based on its economic and technological advancements. However this era’s development served as a mere facade for the corruption and classism which occurred during the time. From economic manipulation to immorality in politics, the Gilded Age is best characterized by the unscrupulous nature of individuals who sought to attain superficial success.

The American Society could currently be in what is considered a Golden Age with all of the advancements that are being made daily. America is the number one leader in advancements in the modern day. America has been making useful advancements since around the 40s, but in the past decade, americans have been creating so many different things that help out our society, many other countries have been struggling to keep up. America has made many educational, artistic, economic, political, medical, social, humanitarian, and technological advancements in the past decade.

From 1870 to 1900 era was called the Gilded Age, a time of immense growth in the United States in transportation, especially in railroads, American workers were paid higher wages than their peers in Europe. In this thirty year span the United States saw twelve million immigrants pass through her golden doors, 70% of these immigrants were English, Irish, and German. Crop failures (potato famine in Ireland), job shortages, and religious freedom were the motivations behind many immigrating to America. Newly arrived immigrants faced a harsh reality in America, employers took advantage of them, the men were often paid less than other native born men and the women were paid even less. Immigrants suffered verbal and physical abuse from employers and other employees because they were different. While researching my Italian heritage I learned that Italians, especially southern Italians were not treated well because they were hired as strikebreakers or scabs by mining and railroading companies. They were called derogatory names such as "dagoes or guineas". Throughout history, America was faced with many problems socially, economically, politically, and technologically. But America has also experienced many great successes in these areas as well. Some opportunities were seized, while others were wasted. We can learn from our past failures and successes and take what we have learned from them forward with us into the future, to help build and maintain a better America. The Gilded Age, during the late 1800’s, was a time in America where we experienced explosive economic growth, serious social problems, new innovative technology, and the rise of corporations and corruption in politics. We have learned from some of these things that we went through in the Gilded Age and fixed them, but we are still facing some of the problems we faced back then, today.

In science, we have been taught that for every action there is a reaction. However, this can also be applied to history. For example, after the French and Indian War, Britain had enforced the navigation laws and taxes in order to pay for the war debt. This had caused a huge reaction from the colonies from as simple as boycotting British goods all the way to declaring their independence in 1776. Individuals can also help bring forth these dramatic changes such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. who help fought for civil rights. Thus, throughout the United States history, the nation has gone through a variety of changes. Although presidents have played a significant role in the nation’s changes, many individuals have also brought changes to the nation's economy, government, and society. In addition to heroes like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr, another individual includes Upton Sinclair and his contribution to consumer protection.

Growing up, many children play the board game “Battleship,” where a player’s main goal is to conquer his opponent’s ships and, eventually, land. Similarly, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the nation of Europe and other countries took over and influenced countries that they believed were inferior to them. This process, known as imperialism, is defined as “a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force” (google.com). Clearly, both children in military board games and Europe in the real world used imperialism when they seized lesser countries like Africa and the Philippines. Imagine the earth as a rubber band and you put it around a roll of paper, paper being the people. The more paper you ad the more stretched the rubber band gets until it just snaps. Earth represents the food water and oxygen needed to live and when that burst, life ceases to exist. Population growth is due to three reasons, high birth rate, low mortality rates, and increase in food production. Populations numbers are more rapidly eating away at natural resources and in the future there will be no more to go around. China's idea is to make laws forbidding no more than one child. Couples should be responsible for the number of kids they have and not be forced by law.
