If you were to visit a jail right now and ask the question “If you had a choice to change your life and do better would you?” majority will tell you yes. Most would go back and change who they were friends with, others would change who they were. Almost everyone in jail has kids, a wife, family who they will not get to go home to because a mistake they’ve made. I know one person who would go back and change his life, my uncle. He’s been in and out of jail more times then I can remember. He’s an active member of a gang in Athens Ohio. He’s addicted to drugs. After writing many letters throughout the years, many holidays without him, I finally asked him if he could change his life would he. I remember the letters I got of him saying “Yes, I would
Implementing restrictions on convicted felons certainly does present both positive and negative affects on the individual felon and on society as a whole. Public support of such restrictions essentially is based on the personal beliefs and priorities of individual citizens. While some people think that restricting convicted felons will deter crime, thereby making society better over all, that isn’t always the case. In fact, these restrictions may even increase recidivism rates in the U.S. due to the inability of felons to achieve a stable lifestyle following their release from prison. Additionally, like you mentioned, such restrictions may impose unfair punishments on individuals who committed relatively minor crimes that only affected themselves,
Should convicted youth gang members be treated like other juvenile delinquents, including status offenders and why do you feel the way you do?
Jail booking personnel do not know from day to day the types of inmates who will be brought to the jail by local, federal, and state law enforcement agencies, be other correctional institutions such as juvenile centers, local jails, out of state jails, or federal or state prisons. The jail booking desk is the main entry point. There are miscellaneous types of offenders who also pass through the booking desk such as the witness who is being held in protective custody. Another type of offender is an inmate from the jail system who violates a rule of work release or home incarceration program, or a criminal statute that dictates that inmate’s removal from such programs pending further criminal action. Jails may hold inmates who are serious security
If I had a get out of jail free card I would save it until I really need it. I wouldn’t use it right away because if I did something to go to jail I would accept the responsibility that comes with the action and serve my time. I would use my card if I had a morally acceptable reason, such as needing to steal food for my family because we are unable to afford it. I would also use it if I got framed for something I didn’t do. I would only use mine if I were in jail for a long period of time; otherwise I would just serve the time, because using it while in jail for a short period of time would be a waste. I think deciding when to use it would be very difficult because I would want to use it right away rather than saving it for when I really need
I am Wallace Winstead the 3rd oldest of 7 children. I have been incarcerated a few times and my mother has never forgotten me or made me feel unloved. Before my incarceration, I was a terror! I'm a full time social science major at Essex County college in Newark Nj. I'm also a member of Union Gospel Tabernacle in Newark
Mass incarceration is colossal in the United States but more common in the black community. Black men are in prison than in college. Black men are locked up every day for crimes and then seem to be forgotten. They are forced to plead guilty and take plea deals for a reduced sentence, instead of the risk of taking it to trial and be given a significant sentence. Being behind the walls of a prison for a long period can have some disadvantages which may lead to suicide or suicidal thoughts. Long periods of incarceration can also affect the chances of receiving a good job which may provide good benefits. That is why in some prisons do have job training, which prepares an inmate for employment after incarceration. I plan to discuss the similarities
As local bail bondsmen with over 20 years' experience, they maintain relationships with every court and detention center in the St. Charles and St. Louis area, giving them the ability to get your friend or family released as soon as possible. They serve municipal, state, federal,
In the U.S. many people may argue that racial disparity is non-existent in today’s time. Those people usually are ignorant to the fact that even though america has come a long way they still have so far to go. From the slavery days, to segregation, to now, a time where a white and black person can sit down together in the same setting and be civilized is great, but if the two get into an illegal situation and both have to be put on trial, who will be the one that is cruelly convicted? Who sentencing will have more time? The Black man, in all cases this may not be true, but in most cases it is. So therefore, even though america came a long way there still needs to be an improvement in their legal system because African-Americans
Do you have a friend or family member that’s went to jail and came back out? Have they changed? Are they better or worse? Have they reoffended?Think how it would be to be blamed for a crime you didn’t do and then have to go to adult prison innocent and having no idea what will happen to you. Should they still go to prison without no explanation?
I personally think that house arrest is a hard punishment for some. House arrest, is when you are considered a prisoner in your own home, rather than in a prison. Some criminals might consider that as a hard punishment because when they are at home they want freedom but that’s not the case when you are on house arrest. When you are on house arrest, you have to stay in a certain distance of your house. I honestly think probation is better. On probation, you can actually have some freedom. Being on probation you still can’t do bad things such as drugs and other crimes. While on probation, you have to report to your probation officer all the time. In some cases, certain offenders deserve certain punishments. For example, if a teenager stole from
Over the years the United States incarceration rate has gradually increased. The money spent on an individual incarcerated each year is more than an average person living off minimum wage. Can these rate decrease? Yes, creating programs that’s actually going to benefit individuals rather than allowing them to feel comfortable with being locked up. Many got comfortable with the idea of being locked up to the point they don’t to return home because life on the outside they are no longer familiar with it.
Youth incarceration is a growing dilemma in the United States that populates facilities as well as ruins lives at an alarming rate. As a society we cannot expect our kids to be the future of this nation when we are placing them in facilities where they become victims of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse that is far worse for them than adults. Michelle Alexander is a professor at Ohio State University and a graduate of Standford Law school. She states in her award-winning book, The new Jim Crow: Mass incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness "Children are five times more likely to be sexually assaulted once being placed into a facility" (Alexander,123). Adolescents being detained causes many problems that are much more detrimental to them than adults. Some of them will now have exposure to drugs and gangs. Others will become victims of sexual abuse from other older inmates or staff members and risk transmitting sexual diseases. Most young juveniles have a mental illness that has not been treated or they become suicidal when staying in a facility. These young people are still adapting to their environment and should not be treated as adults. They are unable to grow and develop when we are punishing them like adults and trapping them in the US justice system. The families of these children will now suffer knowing what their child faces in these facilities. As a nation we cannot consider ourselves civilized when we are placing these young people in facilities that punish them like adults.
“Every year, 641,000 people walk out of prison gates, but people go to jail over 11 million times each year” (Rabuy). Within the United States, the incarceration rate is extremely high. For those who are incarcerated the percentage of people with a mental illness is remarkably prominent. For some offenders, there is another route out there such as diversionary programs which have a positive outcome. Diversionary programs such as The Choice is Yours is a beneficial route for first-time nonviolent felony drug offenders.
The figure above compares the U.S incarceration rate with the rates of countries such as Canada, Australia, and European countries. The Western European democracies possess a rate of incarceration that taken together is only one-seventh the rate of the United States. Moreover, the rate imprisonment of Russia is only two-thirds of the U.S. rate. For instance, there is a reason why the rate of incarceration is significantly high compared to the rest of the world, profit. The bigger the number of people incarcerated, the bigger the pool of workers in correctional institutions.
Prisons have many policies set in place to help aid inmates’ with adjusting to prison life. No matter what policies are set in place to help aid inmates they will always have a hard time especially for first timers. According to Frank Schmalleger and John Ortiz Smykla (2009) new inmates face major problems because of the loss of liberty, lack of material possessions, the depravation of materials and services, the lack of heterosexual relationships, and feeling unsecured. I think that inmates can be helped with the adjustment process by initiating and enforcing a program to deal with such issues. I think I would eliminate policies that are designed to make prison life unpleasant and concentrate more on policies that help inmates progress in their educational and rehabilitation programs. One policy that is very important to inmates is to feel safe in their prison environment. As a result there have been many debates on the rights of the inmates. I think the most important policy I would enforce is educational programs that will
