Genetically Modified Organisms. Sounds familiar, right? GMOs have become a controversial issue all around the world. What are GMOs exactly? GMOS are special organisms with artificially altered genetic makeup produced in a lab from the splicing of specific genes from another organism. Even its’ description seems overwhelming. What’s worse is the fact that there’s seldom any warning labels for GMOs on products. It isn’t very helpful that the United States does not require GMOs to be labeled on store-bought foods. Most of the time, people are oblivious to the foods they consume and how those foods are a detriment to their health. All the same, I am also a part of the oblivion. I, too have consumed modified foods without any knowledge of its …show more content…

Not only are GMOs toxic for humans, but it is just as pernicious for the environment. Those same insecticides that harm humans do the same harm on plants. There are constant risks that the modified genes of the organisms may escape into the wild to create indestructible “superweeds”. “Superweeds” can only be created if the herbicide-resistant organisms breed with wild weeds. These newly developed weeds can only be eradicated by using more toxic poisons such as 2,4-D- an enormously dangerous herbicide that would surely lead to the environment’s deterioration. The contamination of these organisms have costed the U.S. an estimated $12 billion in farming subsidies. As mentioned, BT is produced by modified plants, which consequently, has composed BT-resistant bugs as well as many other “superbugs”. It may seem like this has not taken affect, but the damage has already been done. When will this unnecessary pollution stop? Although it is safe to say that GMOs do hurt human life and the environment, it is also necessary to acknowledge the pros in having genetically modified foods. It is believed that farmers would be able to spend less money producing more food organically because of GMOs. The cost of the technology used in plowing fields would drop drastically if crops were to be modified. Likewise, farmers would have bigger yields to land and be able to use less herbicides and
