Glory was filmed in 1989 directed by Edward Zwick and written by Kevin Jarre and based on the first black company of black soldiers called 54th Massachusetts, which was led by Robert Shaw, an officer in the Federal Army during the American Civil War. Shaw was forced to deal with the prejudice of both the enemy and his own fellow officers. Despite Glory’s highly developed historical strengths and truth, it becomes morally inaccurate because of a few fabricated choices made for filming.
The movie’s strength of idealism that fired these men becomes apparent .The movie is based on the bravery, brilliancy of the soldiers and Robert Shaw. The preparation Kevin Jarre put into this movie by using information he found who be helpful to the audience from

The first inaccuracy that I noticed was the regiments climatic assault against Battery Wagner, the Confederate stronghold guarding Charleston harbor, actually took place from south to north, rather than north to south. With much research I found out that Robert Shaw was not Governor Andrew’s first choice or was Shaw eager to become command of 54th Massachusetts because when the choice was offered to him he hesitated before accepting. The movie made the audience believe that the 54th Massachusetts consisted of illiterate, runaway slaves not educated, middle class Northern blacks. Another inaccurate detail was in the scene where Elwes and Broderick was talking about 54th Mass., Elwes was holding a bottle of Dom Perignon champagne but the first vintage is dated 1921 which means it was not available during the Civil War. The last and final inaccuracy I notice was in the movie the soldiers of the regiment was not issued their uniforms until long after enlistment. However, according to my research about the 54th Massachusetts soldiers were issued their uniforms immediately following
One of the are that the film depthe 54th starting its training in November 1862, when they actually did not begin training until February 1863. Also, in the movie, we see white union soldiers cheering towards the 54th before they charged Fort Wagner, however, I doubt this actually happened because even though the union stood for abolition, most of the whites felt superior to blacks and doubted whether they were actually good soldiers. In addition to that, the confederate stronghold guarding Charleston Harbor was depicted in the movie as taking place from south to north when it was actually from north to south.
Glory has educational value because it stays true to real events and character character interactions. Zwick does choose to exaggerate the influence of characters in the regiment to draw emotion, but his exaggeration does not take away from the historical accuracy as a whole. Glory should not be taken as complete truth, but as long as the audience is aware of the changes, there is no harm done. The film is a good representation of the black soldiers who can often times by over looked, so there is educational value in the awareness it brings to their
Glory (1989) is a historical film that incorporates the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. This regiment of the soldiers consisted of northern freemen and some escaped slaves but, ironically they were led by whites, who had their own perception of the soldiers. Glory includes a great deal of heartbreaking, mind- blowing, and touching scenes. One scene in particular reveals that the African American soldiers were going to be paid a significantly less amount of money than the average pay that a normal white soldier would earn. This pay dilemma that the African American soldiers were forced to face due to the color of their skin and the unjust scrutiny during this time period is what makes this scene the most affecting and demonstrates a rude awakening that even though they were fighting for equal rights, they were still discriminated against due to their skin color.
Why is the movie called Glory? Is it really glory? I strongly believe not only is the movie glory itself, but the characters represent the idea of glory throughout the movie as well. Glory is a high rank of honor, which involves tireless amounts of work to get to. Not only did the characters in the movie represent the movie well, but portrayed the Civil War in a proud manner as well. There are many characters that represent glory, but there are three that stand out among the rest. Those characters are Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, Corporal Thomas Searles, and Sergeant Major John Rawlins.
For my history assignment, I viewed the movie, Sergeant York. Sergeant York is a film about the life of Alvin York. Alvin York is one of the most decorated American soldiers of the World War 1 (Birdwell, M., Dr. (n.d.). It was released on July 2, 1941. This film was directed by Howard Hawks starring Gary Cooper, Walter Brennan, and Joan Leslie. This film has been nominated for many awards and has been ranked 57th out of 100 for the most inspirational American movies (Sergeant York, n.d.). This movie is a great portrayal of Alvin York.
Through the soldiers’ experiences, the narrator shows only the dark side of human nature. Discuss.
To convey the terrible truth that the Allies lost 10,000 men on June 6th, the director had to recreate the gruesome blood soaked waters and beaches and the piles of dead and dying soldiers. The scene when Miller’s men go rummaging through the huge pile of dog tags is surreal.
James Webb focuses on three main characters in his novel: Robert E. Lee Hodges, “Snake,” and Will “Senator” Goodrich. The inspiration for these three characters seems to be not the life of any particular historical figure, but rather the common backgrounds of real soldiers who served in Vietnam in general. Characters in the novel are most often developed only after their initial introduction into the story. After introducing a character to the reader, Webb will often follow this introduction with the story of the characters life before the military and how or why he decided to enlist. Those characteristics not mentioned at his introduction or those that change are typically revealed during or after intense, traumatic events, such as near-death experiences or witnessing the death of a friend. Although the novel centers on only three characters, these three characters represent highly prominent reasons that American’s had for enlisting; to continue a family legacy and protect his family’s honor, to escape the steep decline and unhappiness of his life, and by accident or unwillingly being drafted.
“The effective war film is often the one in which the action begins after the war, when there is nothing but ruins and desolation everywhere…”
First, this movie is somewhat accurate because some events were real and some were made up. Like , the battle of cowpen did not happen like that in the Revolutionary War, this is probably why the director left this battle unnamed. Another example is when the redcoats locked the screaming women,
“Glory” tells the story of the first all-black volunteer regiment in the Union army. The men are led by one Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick), an inexperienced new Englander and son of abolitionist parents. While leading his men, Shaw soon discovers he has to fight not only the opposing force, but racism within his own side.
Saving Private Ryan is a film based during World War II. The main characters of the movie are elite soldiers out of the 2nd ranger battalion. The soldiers of the 2nd ranger Battalion were part of the initial invasion and were vital in the taking of Normandy beach. This was just the beginning for this group of soldiers destined for a mission save Private James Francis Ryan.
Through the main character Captain Willard, we are shown the different physical and mental states of a soldier during war. In the end, we are told what it takes to win a war, and how bravery is not based in good ethics, but in will and
Glory does a great job of capturing many of the feelings towards the black soldiers during the Civil War. The film is based off of the writings of Robert Gould Shaw, from letters he sent to his friends and family members. Most of the events in the movie are depicted very closely to how they actually happened. Director Edward Zwick tried to keep the movie as historically
The main character of this story is Desmond Doss. Desmond Doss is a Conscientious Objector and he decided to join the Army to serve his country. But since he was a Conscientious Objector he promised to himself that he would never touch a gun. While in boot camp he was mistreated by his sergeant and fellow soldiers for his belief. He later trained to become a Combat medic to help his fellow soldiers because he did not want to carry a gun. Before he got deployed he met Dorthy were he got married to her before going to Japan. While over there they attacked the ridge of Okinawa known as Hacksaw Ridge. Most men that were deployed of there were killed trying to take the ridge to gain a foothold in Okinawa, Japan. He was most well known for his action upon the ridge. He saved over 75 lives while not touching a single gun. After he saved another man he would say “Please lord let me get one more.” He ended up gaining the respect and adoration of the men he served alongside. At the end of the movie he was awarded the first purple heart for a Consensus Objector. Also because of his work inspiring the other soldiers they were able to take the ridge.
