Gloria Steinem is possibly one of the most influential women’s social activists of the past century. She is also a writer, speaker, and editor. She is one of the few who helped establish the New York magazine, she is a founder of not only the feminist magazine Ms, but also of the National Women’s Political Caucus. Steinem has numerus bestselling book on a wide variety of topics ranging from feminism to racial and sex caste systems. What is Feminism?
People often confuse feminism with the belief that one gender is higher than the other; this is not true. The actual definition of feminism is. “the advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes.” This means not putting women higher but at an equal playing filed as men. If one is against feminism and think traditional male dominance is key they are most likely to be labeled sexist.

This includes: the release of birth control, laws about abortion, constitutional amendments and many more. A lot of these things still have an impact and cause controversy in today’s society. It was in 1962 when birth control pills made their debut to a society that believed you needed to be married before you could approvingly have sex. Women of this generation saw the pill as a positive. It was seen by them as a way of not being able to get pregnant but still having sex before marriage. For the first time ever conceiving a child was a choice that women could make. It gave the female population a mindset that they had power. They had power of their bodies, and most unintentional pregnancy couldn’t be used to shame them simply because there was less of it happening. We can assume this influenced Gloria Steinman because this happened during the most crucial time of her writing career. It sparked an interest and gave a boost to the women who believed they needed more equality.
