Globalization is the process by which businesses or other organizations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale. According to economic and political writer Doug Bandow, “Some critics of globalization have contended that the process has helped the rich and hurt the poor. However, the best research indicates that this is accurate: ‘Poverty is falling rapidly in those poor countries that are integrating into the global economy.”. In both documentaries “The True Cost” and “Living on One Dollar” we can see how companies exploit their employees for consumer benefit, as well as the social and economic inequalities that are attached with globalization.

In September 1986, I attended and Explorer Academy. I spent about three years in the explorers when I was offered a full time job out of high school. After five years, I wanted to serve my community again. I applied for a volunteer position as a crime analyst. After talking to different departments, I was told education and military experience would help me get a job in a department. I went back to school, took some classes, went through a Reserve Police Officer training, then joined the Marines. I spent six years in the reserve going to Iraq twice during Operation Iraqi Freedom. I was given a grant to return to school which paid for my Associate Degree in Criminal Justice, Corrections. After competing my associate degree, I transferred schools to finish my Bachelorette Degree in Criminology, Law Enforcement. I was recruited by a professor to help with putting together and promoting an Emergency Management, Homeland Security degree for the California State University system. I was invited by this professor to go to Maryland and speak in front of FEMA to other interested parties in creating the same type of programs. I move here in August 2014 with the hopes of finding a great paying job. After 8 months of not hearing back from my job applications, I took a job with towing. I was able to work with Virginia Beach Police Department and liked the people I encountered. I found Virginia Beach Police Department a great department to work for, So I applied for the department and was finally accepted for the police officer position.

As everyone knows, especially those who themselves have attended in a college environment, many students are often young adults who go through a number of new experiences: for some, paying their own bills for the first time, building new relationships, and indulging themselves in the new opportunities that are now open to them, all of which comes with a severe amount of stress; it is also common knowledge that stress hinders an individual's thought process and judgment. With this, it is important to understand that in times of tension, students are often pushed to do things they unfortunately regret. There have been times where, even before the law was passed, that a handgun was found on campus, although a majority of these findings were in order for individuals to protect themselves and ended without worry, others did not end in peaceful negotiations and some even managed to ascend into all-out shootings. Although many individuals turn and ask, “what if I want to defend myself” or “if any other bystander had access to a gun, they could have stopped the shooter before the scene escalated”, many of these people don’t realize that there are many options other than a gun to protect and disarm a perpetrator. This can be done in a number of ways including using a taser, defense spray, or even self-defense techniques.

Generally, globalization has affected many nations in various ways; economically, politically, and socially. It is a term that refers to the fast integration and interdependence of various nations, which shapes the world affairs on a global level. Simply put; globalization is the world coming together. In this essay I will discuss multiple perspectives on globalization through the analysis of these three sources.

We all live in a globalized world; due to technologies being rapidly made it has driven globalization. Now we are well informed about other countries across the entire world and able to communicate internationally. Globalization has created a framework for cooperation among homelands. Generally, it has affected our nations and, indirectly we, the citizens in various ways; economically, politically, and socially, however it is a fast integration and association of various nations, which shapes the world affairs on a global level. The concept of globalization is evident in the many difficult challenges that come with it, involving our cultural differences, and the regulating challenge of globalizations. The phenomenon of globalization has affected many cultures around the world, resulting in the Americanization of other nations.

Globalization is difficult to simply define due to the variety of changing definitions that have been established over previous decades. Hamilton and Webster (2012) suggest that globalization is the connection between nations, defining globalization as a process in which barriers are reduced in order to encourage exchanges between countries. This view proposes that globalization refers very much so to the trade barriers and the improved communications between countries in order to ensure the world is unified. Globalization increases economic activity across the world and opens up markets for foreign investment.

Globalization, described as the expansion, intensification and acceleration of global interconnectedness, is one of the intense phenomena that the contemporary era has experienced. It has influenced the monetary, ecological, and societal characteristics of all the nations of the world. Due to both positive and negative consequences on the life of the citizens the world over, globalization is one of the most talked about issue of this century (Javed 2004).

The term globalization can be defined as a process by which societies, regional economies and cultures have been integrated via a global network of transportation, communication and trade. It has both positive and negative impacts in all the areas that it touches on be it economical, social, technology, cultural, political, environment, health or any other. Globalization is a very broad topic; a sweeping term established in the minds of individuals primarily over the past quarter-century. It describes the widespread global integration of economic, political, social, and cultural systems that is shaping the world we live in today. Marked by the establishment of trade liberalization movements such as the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the World Trade Organization (WTO), globalization has greatly accelerated over the past twenty-five years, indeed, "world exports have grown at an exponential rate of 6.0 percent in volume [annually]" (Tremblay, 2015). Depending on the angle in which we choose to look at it, we may define and interpret it differently: good or bad, positive or negative. As Jan Aart Scholte describes, "knowledge of globalization is substantially a function of how the word is defined" (Scholte, 2000). Initially, the topic of globalization touched primarily on local and global issues such as poverty and world peace, homogenization, and cultural, economical, and political convergence. Now, it is understood to be a far more complex subject that is "contingent, ambiguous, contradictory, and paradoxical" (Stromquist et. al., 2014). Regardless of whether one chooses to take a positive or negative standpoint on globalization, the fact remains that this process is taking on an increasingly global scale and has profound effects on individuals, nations, governments, and businesses every day. Globalization is the act of physical, political, social and economic interaction of people across the world leading to an integrated system that is synchronized through common understanding (Scholte, 2000). The main area of concern is across border trade where business resources are shared beyond domestic markets to establish an interconnection with preferred foreign markets. There have been three forces that have continually increased the globalization phenomenon. They include transportation, technology and communication.

Globalization has become one of the most progressive processes our present day world has seen. It has propelled the world into great eminence and productivity with its many advanced characteristics and effects. This process is essentially the global expansion of integration and interdependence between countries with a standardized foundation. This process has allowed for people, trade, and information all over the world to be connected more than ever. With the world’s dependence on the outcomes of globalization such as trade, international institutions, and technology, globalization is nowhere from dying down, but rather it is a tidal wave that is taking over the world.

Globalisation is a process, a breaking down of traditional boundaries and barriers between individuals, whole societies, and economies, as well increasing the political, social and economic integration and interconnectedness between regions. Globalisation doesn’t happen uniformly, and it impacts people in profoundly different ways often dependant on whether they live in core or periphery regions. Globalisation has advantages and disadvantages to people, the process of globalisation may mean that there is advantages to people in some places whilst other places are experiencing disadvantages. It could be argued that globalisation transforms people and places by making them both more interconnected or ‘closer’ together, although globalisation cannot change absolute distance it does impact relative distance by reducing the friction of distance, which leads to time space convergence. Time space convergence defined by Knox and Marston (2015) as the tendency of some “places” to move closer together in regards to travel, cost, communication or time.

Globalization can be defined as ‘international integration’, which can be described as the process by which the people of the world are unified into a single society and functioning together. This process is a combination of economic, technological, and political forces (dictionary.com).
