The world has been dealing with global warming for many years and it has a major effect on the world and what happens in the climate. Carbon pollution is the main reason for the increase of heat which then increases the chances of weather disasters, droughts, floods and even hurting our health. But there are solutions, we can cut carbon pollution which can be done by reducing the use of fossil fuels and we can be increasing our use of clean, renewable energy. National Geographic assembled the world’s foremost researchers and scientists to address a challenge called the “The Great Energy” challenge which challenges influential citizens and key energy stockholders in solutions-based thinking dialogue about our shared energy future. The challenge is led by Thomas Lovejoy who is a national geographic conservation fellow and renowned biologist. Together they will identify and provide support for projects that focus on energy solutions. Unfortunately we are the cause of the climate change that is taking place worldwide because when we are extracting and burning fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum we are causing the release of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere. “Additional carbon dioxide comes from coal and oil because of the chemical composition of the carbon dioxide contains a unique finger print.” We have also been cutting down forest trees which releases large amounts of carbon dioxide and on top of all that for plants and trees to grow the
According to scientists the burning of fossil fuels is the main source for the large amounts of pollutants humans are creating. Fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas produce large amounts of carbon when burned to create energy that we all use. Many people think that the burning of these fossil fuels is not that big of a deal and there are other major contributors in the climate change controversy. The burning of these resources produce thousands of tons of carbon that are released into the atmosphere everyday Most everyone in the United States uses some source of energy produced from fossil fuels. Without the fossil fuels the major cities would not have enough energy to keep everything going. While they are working on increasing the amount of renewable energy sources, they are still dependent on the fossil fuels. Scientists are trying to link human pollution to the extreme weather changes that have been going on in recent years. An article found on www.edf.com Climate Changes Effect Plunder the Planet brings up some of the ideas that are caused by climate change. With the large amounts of carbon and other greenhouse gasses that are released they are effecting our ozone layer by trapping heat from leaving the planet, causing an increase in the global temperature around the world. www.study.com Fossil Fuels, Greenhouse Gases, and Global Warming states that over the last 800
Recent scientific evidence indicates that humans have upset the carbon cycle, leaving more carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Burning fossil fuels such as oil and natural gas, burning biomass such as ethanol and wood, creating cement and releasing other chemicals into the atmosphere is upsetting the natural flow of carbon.
Conserving the Earth is one thing that was always a priority. After the industrial era, there was many inventions that had started global warming. This is when people started to build over nature, and killed many trees, and habitats. The progressive era goal was to fix these problems and make America a better place. It first started in Theodore Roosevelt presidency. He believed in conservation, and help make the national park system. Today, United States Environmental Protection Agency reports that in the past century the average temperature has increased by 1.5°F. People believe that this is normal and that global warming is not a real thing and is just fake. Later on, EPA declares that this century the average temperature can increase by
97% of scientists believe that humans are to blame for global warming because of the industrial activities have raised two hundred and eighty parts per million to four hundred parts per million in the last hundred and fifty years. The burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil has went up the atmosphere because of carbon dioxide the oil and coal burning it, it combines carbon with oxygen in the air to make carbon dioxide when the carbon dioxide reaches the atmosphere, is rapidly distributed between atmosphere, the upper-ocean and vegetation.
Every year the average American produces over 22 metric tons of CO2 living a normal life (“What is Carbon Neutrality,” 2008); and the United States as a whole produces 6,049,435 metric tons of CO2 yearly (“List of Countries by CO2 Emissions,” 2010). This disturbing figure is the main cause of global warming and we have yet to take responsibility for our actions. There are many different theories of what has caused global warming and the answer is mankind. Humans are the cause of global warming because of pollution, over population, and deforestation.
Global warming is a huge concern in society that is only growing bigger because people either are not well informed about it, or they are not concerned about it. Some think that it will just go away and others still believe that it doesn’t exist, even though there is hundreds if not thousands of pieces of evidence that supports otherwise. One of the biggest pieces of evidence that proves global warming is real is the effect that photosynthesis has on global warming.
There are many factors and catalysts making small inclinations and changes within global temperature, but mankind has been the biggest, causing detrimental harm to the world in global warming. Throughout history there are natural causes that factor in small and short term climate change, such as the occasional volcano erupting, or an excess of greenhouse gases in the air, which are gases that help absorb radiation, which as a result keeps heat within the atmosphere, having a warmer net temperature. Annually there are many fluctuations that cause minor altercations within but humanity doesn't help either. During post 1850s since the industrial revolution, the significant uses of coals, oils, and fossil fuels, have caused an exponentially increasing amount of carbon dioxide to be released
To begin, while “No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible”, all our carbon footprints compound to create the deadly toxins that will be our undoing. While some believe Global Warming to be a hoax, it is a very potent reality. Carbon Dioxide is a gas found in all petroleum, which causes the greenhouse gas effects; according to Friends of the Earth, the Alberta Oil Sands have “three to four times” (“Friends of the Earth”) the carbon emissions typical oil reserves do. This increase in emissions is the exact opposite of what the environment needs. We must decline usage of these poisonous gases if we wish to continue to have a thriving atmosphere.
What we are doing to stop burning fossil fuels and help the environment is everything we
Human beings play an enormous role in the current climate change that are affecting planet earth today. The first major way that humans are affecting the climate is by burning fossil fuels. Even though fossil fuels are needed in today's society they are being overused; to the point that non reusable resources are used everyday. People use them in different way; for their cars, for buses, trains and some use these foil fuels to warm their homes. Corporations use them to make and deliver their products. Like an article stated “The basic claim of the paper is that by burning fossil fuels at a prodigious pace and a pouring heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere, humanity is about to provoke an abrupt climate shift”(Gillis 11). This is how the fossil fuels are changing the climate. Before humans started using these resources, the climate stayed fairly similar. Now that humans are burning these resources, the weather is changing drastically. The glaciers are melting because the burning fossil fuels are releasing gases that are trapping heat in the atmosphere. The melting polar ice caps are raising sea levels and putting coastal cities in danger of flooding. If a new source of renewable energy isn’t found quickly then,
The issue of global warming should be on the list of our top priorities. Studies show that the average of global temperatures have risen since the Industrial Revolution began. Since the Industrial Revolution, human emissions has quadrupled the frequency of certain heat extremes and many scientists have warned that a failure to bring greenhouse gases under control could eventually lead to a 62-fold increase in extreme heat blasts (Gillis Justin A17). Most of the increase is due to human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. These activities contribute to a build-up in carbon dioxide and other gases in Earth’s atmosphere. The Earth’s atmosphere is made of gases like nitrogen, carbon dioxide and oxygen. These gases act as a blanket that covers and gives us warmth, but once these gases such as carbon dioxide absorbs heat, but does not release it back into space in which causes the increase in global temperature. This is called the greenhouse effect because it only traps heat but does not release it.
“Temperature is probably the single most important environmental factor influencing insect behavior, distribution, development, survival, and reproduction“. (Bale et al 2002). Since insects are cold-blooded, the environmental temperature plays a very important role in an insect’s homeostasis. Homeostasis is the relatively constant internal physical and chemical condition that organisms maintain. Once the temperature has changed from its norm, an insect’s daily functions would be disrupted. “It has been estimated that with a 2 degree Celsius temperature increase insects might experience one to five additional life cycles per season” (Yamamura & Kiritani 1998). Scientists believe a warmer climate may result in higher insect populations. However, studies have shown that butterflies prefer a cooler climate. The butterfly population is decreasing at sea level but is increasing at tree line as butterflies migrate to cooler areas. For example, the Brown Argus Butterfly has shifted where its populations are most dense; a butterfly that was once predominantly found in Southern Britain, has now relocated to Northern Britain, a dramatic change of 79 kilometers. Butterflies at the highest-elevation site are appearing with increasing regularity. Those that normally breed at 7,000 feet now breed at 9,000 feet. When an area changes from rural to urban or suburban, the greatest butterfly losses occur. This proves that global warming is having an effect on organisms, even if the change
Most of the blame for climate change over the years especially after the 1850’s has been placed on humans. As long as modern humans have roamed the earth, they have been upsetting the natural balance of the earth. People have did this by clearing areas of land, killing animals, polluting water, etc. Before the “modern human”, people like the Native Americans cared for the earth. They respected the land and the people that cared for it. Unfortunately, people don’t care anymore. Until recently, people did not care for the earth. People did not realize the harm they were causing it. Now we know how detrimental things are that we continue to do and used to do.
Industrialized societies are now tormented by several pollution problems that were largely unknown prior to WWII. Prominent among these problems is environmental pollution of xenobiotic synthetic chemicals that fail to be recycled by microorganism and may be biomagnified with destructive effects. Also, deforestation, land conversion, overhunting and the burning of fossil fuels are other human’s activities that impact negatively our ecosystem. A social issue is defined as an area of conflict in a social setting that influences different people and is often out of reach of the control of an individual or local geographical authority (Weart 73). Some social problems, however, are not perceived universally as such, resulting in a difference in opinion between different groups. Other social issues are universally recognized as justifiable and, therefore, are addressed by everyone. Global warming is a social issue that traverses national borders, making it an international concern. It is a social problem because many diverse social groups from all over the globe have viewed it as a cause for concern (Weart 74). Nations have come together and tried to fight
