Centura Health had the opportunity for a workshop presentation by Dominique Morgan-Solomon, a population health expert. Dominique Morgan-Solomon, MPH, works as a consultant in health care delivery, device management, and for health care organizations on population health strategies and program implementation. Prior to consulting, Dominique was the Chief Operating Officer of Steward Medical Group and Vice President of Population Health for Steward Health Care from February 2012 until October of 2015. She was responsible for the strategic planning and execution of its quality performance, clinical integration care management, and population health programs. Last year she was awarded “Young Healthcare Executive of the Year” for her leadership in this promising field by the National Association of Health Service Executives (NAHSE). She has exceeded in her career after receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University in Biology and Political Science and a Master of Public Health in Health Policy from the University of Michigan.

When I first arrived at UC Davis as an undergraduate, I was unaware of what global health was. Although my interests aligned with health topics, such as disease prevention and improving health literacy, I did not explore any other graduate degrees besides an M.D. However, my career plans changed when I joined a public health advocacy group called RIVER (Recognizing Illnesses Very Early and Responding). RIVER prioritized educating underserved populations in Davis and the Greater Sacramento area about how essential preventive care is to one’s health. Through my participation in the organization as a board member, I learned more about preventive care and applied that knowledge by teaching underprivileged communities about how to make healthier lifestyle changes through exercise and nutrition. Since coming to college, I have grown a desire to help create policies and programs to alleviate the disparities that exist in the US and globally. The understanding I have gained from sociology and ethics classes I have taken at UT has broadened my interest in health care and my volunteer experiences have solidified this classroom knowledge. As a student in the Health Science Scholars Honors Program, I have the opportunity to complete a senior capstone thesis project. This interest has had a major role in directing my research and I believe will effect the direction that I take in my career.

My interest in health policy has emerged from the desire to empower those who have a lesser ability to change their own personal circumstances. Throughout my life, three characteristics have driven my goals and choices: (1) an appetite for travel and broad exploration; (2) an enjoyment of problem solving; and (3) a deep-seated desire for equity and justice. For as long as I can remember, it has been my goal to integrate these three core values into my career, and they have fueled me to become a more effective researcher, teacher and practitioner.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is the principal government agency in the United States working to improve the health of all Americans despite their economic, social and educational status. Overlooking either side of the issue wastes both valuable time and resources during an era that cannot afford such loss. Some argue that health care is a fight that politicians must win to enact change. My passion for global health stems from my experiences as a child. Growing up as a child of Mexican immigrants to the United States, I had the opportunity to visit family members in southern Mexico every few years. While I savored reconnecting with relatives, my awareness of inequalities bolstered with each visit. My relatives live in rural areas where economic adversity is persistent and access to quality healthcare is sparse. Contrasting my relatives’ experiences and opportunities with my own exemplified to me how one’s life is shaped by economic conditions, healthcare access, education systems, and one’s birthplace.

One of the most appealing aspects of becoming a public health professional is the wide range of careers available to choose from. My career goals coincide with the range of opportunities; however, ultimately I want to work with an organization similar to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. I want to focus on the social and medical aspects of disease, and examine the disproportionate rates of disease and disability among minorities. I also want to help prevent the spread of infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS that is rapidly destroying so many countries. My passion to help others around me has sparked a desire to work with clinics around the world in order to promote change in the treatment and prevention of devastating diseases like HIV/AIDS.

I have always been aware of global issues and needing to understand what is happening in the world has always been important to me. However, I never understood global concerns through a health paradigm. Many of the concepts presented in this course were not new to me, as I have been an active participant in global issues and organizations, such as Spread the Net Campaign to end malaria, as well as many different human rights causes. After finishing my Undergraduate, I have seen it wise to purse masters in public health, an area that I have much interest in.
