In Egypt, the social structure was very important to everyday life. At the top they had their main gods, Ra, Osiris, and Isis. They even elevated some of their own people to the top, giving the god status. These were the Pharaohs. The Pharaohs had total control and power over their subjects and pyramids were built as their graves. There is also a chain of command at the top of hte social structure. After Pharaohs came his appointed assistant, known as the Vizier who collected and kept track of the taxes. Under the vizier came their scribes to helped record all the documents. These were vitally important because they were largely the only ones in the entire community who could read and write. Then came the soldiers, quite high up on the ladder compared to many of the other civilizations. This was because fighting for the Pharaoh was highly appraised work. The middle class was made up of the craftsmen, traders and merchants, and artisans. These are the people who created the everyday tools for people up and down the entire social structure. The Greek historian Herodotus, thought to be the father of modern history, represented Khufu as a savage leader who used slave labor to build his tomb. Herodotus’ information however, is extremely unreliable. Not only was he born 2000 years after Khufu’s rule, his aim was not to provide an accurate recount of the events of the past, his aim was to write a story. This false representation lead to the common misinterpretation of the workers who built the pyramid of Giza as slaves. The information presented by Herodotus states that Khufu used slave labor to build the pyramid and even sold his own daughter to prostitution so he could afford to build his pyramid. There is little evidence to suggest that slaves were used and even less evidence to suggest that Khufu’s daughter was prostituted out. There is evidence however, which suggests that not only did Khufu employ workers to build his pyramid, they were also treated fairly. Tombs found around the base of the pyramid of Giza were discovered and found to serve as the eternal resting place for workers who built the pyramid. Graffiti found inside the pyramid itself suggests that the laborers who worked on the pyramid were organized into separate units and inside these units, there were 5 separate divisions who worked in shifts building the pyramid. One of the many
