The roles of women have changed in history. Women have been a centered discussion and powerful components on men in history and literature. Women were seen in many ways, but mainly in a bad light with less to do with their mind, but more so with their bodies. The women in Gilgamesh have a strong presence in the story, some good and some bad. One stand point that is broad is that they have a voice. In Gilgamesh the women are seen as nurturers, possessions, down falls, and sexual beings but with an unexpected twist of actually having a voice. In Medea by Euripides, Medea uses a seductive source to obtain her revenge. She is an example of a scorned woman succumbed by the passion of revenge and allowing her voice to be heard rather it was wanted …show more content…

Before Medea took this stance for herself, it is evident that women were not of any importance to their male counterparts. They were objects or possessions to men and were easily thrown away and replaced at the drop of a hat and women were eager to please a man, “...we bid the highest price in dowries just to buy some man to be dictator of our bodies …how that compounds the wrong!” (31). Men reigned as kings, but one “king” power was soon to be overthrown. Here comes Medea, a woman who was devoted to her life as a wife and a mother. Her husband, who takes advantage of her and does not treat her as she should be treated, leaves her and their children alone for another woman. The raw disrespect for Medea from her husband is shown when he expects her to go on with her life and raise his children so, that he can be happy with this new wife. An all too common tale for the other women in Medea’s society. Medea takes a modern day role of a woman and decides that she will no longer conform herself to what is expected and takes a stance. She did not want to be just this woman who was used for sex and procreation, “I had rather stand my ground three times among the shield than face childbirth once” (31). Her passion for revenge takes hold of her, rightfully so, so, she seeks it. Now, her judgment is impaired from her passion for revenge. She goes on a violent rampage killing her own children and her now ex-husband’s mistress. Her actions then results in the death of others that she does not mean to harm and all for what? A man. Women will do crazy things for love sadly. Her wants overshadowed the right thing to do. She was not at first someone with a voice, but she made her voice prominent to everyone around her.
