Gilgamesh Strengths

The story of “Gilgamesh” depicts all of the heroic triumphs and heart-breaking pitfalls a heroic narrative should depict to be able to relate to today’s audience. However, “Gilgamesh” was once considered a lost and forgotten piece of literature for thousands of years, so there is a tremendous gap between the time it was created and the time it was translated into language that today’s audience can understand. That gap in history makes several aspects of the story of “Gilgamesh” strange and unfamiliar because what we now know about ancient Middle Eastern cultures and languages is a lot less than what we know about the cultures that prospered after ancient Middle Eastern cultures. The earliest surviving literary work, dating from 2100 BC in the Sumerian city of Uruk, The Epic of Gilgamesh tells the story of a hero’s journey to immortality. The Epic of Gilgamesh, written by the Sumerians in their akkadian text and translated by George Smith in the early 1870s, follows the main character Gilgamesh, the unjust and cruel king of Uruk, and his friend Enkidu on their journey to achieve greatness in which Enkidu dies, prompting Gilgamesh to seek immortality. In the story, Enkidu’s character serves as a foil to show and exaggerate Gilgamesh’s immorality and bravery.

In all of the story of Gilgamesh, he is portrayed as a somewhat perfect being. Being able to boast of his physical and godlike prowess among his subjects. However, do these two qualities make him that much more of a hero than other ancient hero’s tales? Or even a hero at all? Gilgamesh’s tales may have qualities that make him like a hero, yet compared to other definitions of a hero he may not stand up to the test of those who, like him, have had their stories told for all ages. As we examine Gilgamesh’s story we will see that in physical, personal characteristics, and accomplishments, he might be more of a hero than most of us think he is.

In the period of 2800-2700 B.C.E. Gilgamesh was seen as a god and a warrior to his people, and to them a god is immortal. Little did Gilgamesh know, he wasn’t immortal but the people of Uruk weren’t aware of this they actually believed that Gilgamesh was a divine. I think that Gilgamesh is an important historical hero that influenced the society to have a relationship with gods, view there gods, and on how divinity impacts culture in the Mesopotamian civilization. Throughout this essay I will address the main purposes and analyze the influence of Gilgamesh for his society.

In ‘The Epic of Gilgamesh’, the protagonist fails to fulfill the demands and responsibilities the gods’ and people of Ancient Sumerian society have bestowed upon him. The duties of a Sumerian king are to honor and best represent the Gods ‘ virtues and principles through his ruling actions over the inhabitants of the kingdom.

People have been fascinated by tales of heroism for centuries. In ancient Mesopotamia, heroes give people hope and comfort, and fill them with strength. Ancient Mesopotamia is filled with tales of heroes- mighty warriors battling monsters, men ready to risk life and limb to save their true love or to fight for their nation. Still, there is a great difficulty that lies in defining what a hero truly is. Strength alone does not make a hero; nor does intelligence. Moreover, the Epic of Gilgamesh truly defines the definition of a hero. Gilgamesh is portrayed as a true hero through his skill, intelligence, willingness to die, reverence, and his respect for death.

The maturation of Gilgamesh and his desire to acquire wisdom throughout his journey is quite apparent. By overcoming difficulties such as upholding Uruk, becoming friends with Enkidu, and various other scenarios, Gilgamesh proves that he did in fact grow up throughout the epic.

This story has been one of my favorite readings of all time . This epic poem was about a young god who is two-thirds god and one-third man by the name of Gilgamesh, mighty king of Uruk-haven whom is known for his arrogance, Strength who is later challenged by another molded creation Enkidu, referred to by the god Anu as “zikru,”. Who played an important role in Gilgamesh’s life. They have gone through many challenges and have overcome many obstacles together like the ferocious “humbaba” and “Bull of Heaven”.

The Epic of Gilgamesh has its place as one of the first examples of epic poetry in recorded history. The epic describes the adventures of the demigod-king Gilgamesh who, after the death of his close friend Enkidu, seeks immortality but is ultimately unsuccessful. This story arc is not dissimilar to those found in the epics of the ancient Greeks centuries later. This excerpt from The Epic of Gilgamesh clearly demonstrates Gilgamesh’s reckless lust for pride and fame at all costs.

Behind every religion there is a story. These stories open the eyes of their listeners to form them into better people, usually promising them afterlife. No matter the time period or culture, these lessons all have something in common: people should be good. Stories such as “Epic of Gilgamesh”, “Genesis”, “Mandate of Heaven”, “The Justice of God”, and “Siddhartha’s Enlightenment” are from different religions yet they share a common theme.

The Epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest epic known to date. It is an old Babylonian tale first written down in Sumerian. The first known copy of the epic is dated to around 2100 to 2000 B.C.E. However, it is believed to have originated many years earlier passed along though oral story telling. The epic was used in Babylonian schools to teach literature to students (Puchner 36). In ancient times, the Epic of Gilgamesh was widely read from Mesopotamia to Syria to Levant and Anatolia. The epic was also translated into non-Mesopotamian languages such as Hittite (Puchner 34). The story we know today was expanded upon around 1200 B.C.E. by a Babylonian priest. “The eleven-tablet version may be said to have assumed its present form during the latter part of the second millennium”(Abusch 618). It was then written down again and stored in the library of an Assyrian king named Ashurbanipal (Ziolkowski 55-56). It was thanks to this act that
