The second, secondary source was George Washington, Nationalist (Charlottesville and London, 2016); Edward J. Larson. This book focuses on Washington right after the revolution and the unstable time leading to him becoming president. This book will be helpful because it has many primary quotes in it. It also focuses on a critical time in George Washington’s life, where his past military experiences and personality were needed to help bring everyone together when it was needed most. The third secondary source I am using is George Washington and the New Nation (1970 Little, Brown and Company Boston, Toronto); James Thomas Flexner. Joseph Ellis has written a very readable and concise synopsis on the life of George Washington. Though more recognizable for his works "Founding Brothers" and "American Sphinx" (about Thomas Jefferson), Ellis successfully undertakes the task of illuminating probably the most important figure in American history.
Everyone knows George Washington as the first president, but most people do not know his other roles in the creation of the United States of America. In Joseph J. Ellis’s book, His Excellency George Washington, Ellis tells about Washington’s life. He includes his time as a general in the Revolutionary War, his life in retirement after the war, and also his time as the president. Ellis’s main focus in the book is to paint a picture for the reader so it almost feels like they are right next to Washington as his life is explained. The information in his book allows for readers to have a better understanding of what Washington went through in his life and also ,at times, gives educated guesses on what Washington might have been thinking. Through this book, it is easy to see why George Washington is referred to as one of the greatest Americans to ever live.
In this chapter, Joseph J. Ellis tells us about how George Washington’s retirement for being the president. He thinks that it was a good thing because there was no sign of failure and everything got stronger and they were ready for what the future held for the nation. George Washington knew that, from his powerful influence, the country was going to be strong because of the two years he served as president. Joseph J. Ellis also looks at how George Washington’s bad health and his hate towards the press criticism influenced the decision. Then, in the end, the chapter concludes with Washington’s Farewell Address and the discussion of the major points in the text.
The following chapters portray the sections of Washington life when he was a soldier, his days as a general, and his duty as the president. The book details the military plights Washington faced as a leader. Ellis says that Washington “lost more battles than he won; indeed, he lost more battles than any victorious general in modern history.” The War for Independence emerged as the most significant milestone in George Washington's life, a time in which he evolved into a grown man, a notorious politician, and a national icon. Ellis does not take us through each battle in detail, but describes the events that shaped Washington’s life and made him a human

To the Revolution's last day, Washington's troops were mad, starving, and their pay was beyond terrible. He guided this force year after year through humiliating defeats to final victory. One of the least known facts known about George Washington is more than once he paid the men out of his own pocket to keep them from going home, Washington earned the unlimited loyalty and confidence of his citizens. Although I could have many reasons for picking George Washington for my project his upmost devotion to our country is the reason he stood out to me for the theme being about leadership. Political affairs of the new country influenced by literary propaganda declared select individuals to be superior leaders in times of unrest throughout the nation. George Washington, one of the most influential American leaders in history, united the nation with exemplary communication and persuasion techniques in order to prevent further revolt and disorder in his nation. His legacy as an impeccable president, derived from unimaginable accomplishments

When Washington was asked by his fellow founding fathers to become the new King of the United States, his reaction must have been priceless. After fighting the revolution for many long hard years, to get away from a monarchy, and now they wanted to create another one. Washington had his reasons why he did not wish to be king because, “He was driven by Ameri-can nationalism years before independence was declared, and for eight long years after 1775 he sacrificed as a soldier to bring the American na¬tion into being. He emerged from retirement to search for a means of safeguarding a national Union imperiled by sectionalists and localists, and with considerable misgivings he agreed to take on the presidency in an attempt to establish an energetic national government and a robust and truly independent United States.” Washington did not wish to be King, he wished to have what he fought in the revolution for, a government that was governed by the people not a monarch.
