George Washington Carver started his life in Diamond Grove Missouri because of his numerous medical problems he did not go work in the fields but he worked in the house of his masters. At age 12 he left Diamond Grove to pursue his academic dreams. Then he became Iowa state university's first African American staff member. In 1896 carver received a summons to head the agriculture department in Tuskegee Alabama. Because the school had such low funds Carver gave the students scavenger hunts as assignments to get lab supplies. During the year 1916 he published the first of his peanut based papers. His paper was “How to grow peanuts and 105 ways of preparing it for Human consumption” At this time the south's cotton crop was failing. So Carver published
