The sun is just setting over the men of the Third Army. They are overtaking one of the most prized Nazi strongholds, Metz. These men who will wage war within the hour are heroes in their own right but the hero they all look up to is their general, George S. Patton. He truly is the hero of this theatre of war. These, and all heroes, look at danger as little more than an obstacle to overpass. General George S Patton and Odysseus from The Odyssey, by Homer, are both heroes. They reached fame at very different times but they both exhibited the same qualities and abilities that allowed them to overcome any and every challenge thrown at them. Patton fought Nazis in North Africa and Western Europe, Odysseus battled Cyclops and other beasts …show more content…
He would not have been called a coward if he walked away from those odds. He didnt walk away. He stood and fought with his son and they prevailed. He decided that his home and his family were worth the risk. Patton, as a general in WWII, knew that each man under his control was worth it. He told them that,” Each man has a purpose in my army and each man before me will be expected to fulfill that duty”(O’Reilly.14). Patton did more than just inspire his men from a concealed hideout, far from the danger of the front lines, he also journeyed in his Willy Jeep to the front lines to guide the assault. He was a high value target and escaped death on numerous occasions but he maintained his composure on these ever increasing excursions. When leaving the front lines he would find soldiers and make a point of, “placing his hand on their shoulder, looking them in the eyes and saying, ‘Don’t disappoint me soldier.” (O’Reilly.15). He expected a lot of his men just as Odysseus did as evidenced by his disappointment when members of his crew became disloyal and even acted as cowards when faced with challenges.. Odysseus himself did great things but he expected to be a role model to his men as well. When in a grim situation, a hero needs to remain composed to allow for his wisdom and strategic mindset to come through and save the day as displayed by both Odysseus and Patton. Odysseus was trapped in a cave with a stone, that no group of men could move, separating him from the
When Odysseus encounters the sirens, he comes up with a plan to help them escape them. In “Book Twelve, line 142,” Odysseus says, “Friends, have we never been in danger before this? More fearsome, is it now, than when the Cyclops penned us in his cave?... Did I not keep my nerve, and use my wits to find a way out for us?” Even in danger Odysseus is able to keep himself together and lead his men. Homer, in this, shows us that a leader needs to be brave in all times, always ready to take control and calm his men. Before Odysseus returns home, his wisdom is shown once again when his men don’t listen to him, because of this, all his men die and Odysseus returns
I drew up my wits, and ran through tactics, reasoning as a man will for dear life until a trick came”(907). Odysseus' persistence of not giving up with no way out, saved them from the evil Cyclops. His persistence has saved him and his crew many times. Yet another example was when they were on their way to Scylla, after they lost a lot of their men to the Cyclops.
Both of the men show bravery by going off to war to not only protect their families but also their country as well. They show bravery in all the obstacles they face by not being afraid and finding ways out. Lots of people look up to men like these 2. They showed great bravery by going into war. Inman showed bravery when he was injured and told he wasn’t going to live. He kept going and ending up surviving. Odysseus showed bravery when he came up with the idea of the Trojan horse and he is the one who tells them when to attack the city. They also show perseverance because they don’t back down when they are faced with tough obstacles along the way. They didn’t quit because they want to get home to their family. The men also show great strength from the beginning of the stories. They show strength not just in war but when they were weak and just kept going. Again, like when Inman was told he was going to die, he stayed strong and didn’t allow their words to make him weak. Odysseus shows strength when he is stranded with no crew, he keeps pushing on and doesn’t give up. They both push through because they want to get home showing lots of perseverance and strength as well as some heroic
Being brave requires massive strength of mind, body, and spirit. It is being prepared to face adversity. It allows people to face their greatest enemies without fear. Out of all of the characteristics that Odysseus portrays, bravery stands out above all. There are many cases in which this shows up in The Odyssey by Homer. Specific examples that represent Odysseus's bravery are the battle of Cicones, the events at the cyclops cave, and the events with the lotus eaters.
In The Odyssey by Homer, the characters use strategy instead of strength to conquer obstacles. Odysseus resists fighting with Melanthius when hearing insults. Also, he thinks his way out of being killed by a Cyclops. Odysseus does not fall for peer pressure does what he thinks is best. Homer uses Odysseus to demonstrate how a real hero uses mental strength.
Without a second thought Odysseus rushes to rescue his men, not caring about the danger, even after Eurylochus begs him to leave the island. The quote reads,” Eurylochus tells Odysseus what has happened and begs him to sail away from Circe's’ island. Against this advice, however, Odysseus rushes to save his men from the enchantress.”(Page: 1225, Lines 46-48) Bravery shines through this act of loyalty, by Odysseus putting his own life at risk to save others. The abundant amount of mental strength that it took for him to do this, really proves how loyal of a person Odysseus
In The Odyssey written by Homer the main protagonist, Odysseus, learns many things about himself on his journey back home and reveals the truth that mankind can be easily manipulated by someone who seems more powerful and or intimidating. Odysseus has a troubling time getting back home to his wife and kingdom when the god of the sea, Poseidon, does almost everything in his power to stop him from doing so. Along Odysseus’s journey he has to face many obstacles and he learns to display three main traits of bravery, wittiness and perseverance which he uses to get home safely and avoid the dangers of threatening people and or things that get in the way. Odysseus proves himself to be full of bravery, which he exhibits during a fight with a cyclops:
Every human being is capable of taking action into any situation they are put in. Heroes are within those humans, as they have been given attention for the obstacles they face, not unlike Odysseus, the epic hero in The Odyssey. Yet, traits possessed while put in front of a problem makes up how others see them as a hero, although the qualities of heroes are not always positive, and many men and women considered modern day heroes take hold of these traits. The character Odysseus encounters many life-threatening obstacles in his tale. He handles these in a rather disappointing way, using guile to sneak his way past the enemy.
In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus demonstrates the courage to face danger and adversity. When Odysseus and his men meet the Kyklops Polyphemos, they “felt a pressure in their hearts...but all the same, [Odysseus] spoke up in reply”(Homer 152). Even though everyone was astonishingly scared of the Kyklops and what may happen next, only Odysseus had the bravery to speak up to the Kyklops, even though he was scared himself. Much later, Kirke tells him of the two monsters Kharybdis and Skylla he is soon to face at sea and he listens to this, but exclaims, “Only instruct me...how if possible, can I pass Kharybdis, or fight off Skylla when she faces my crew?”(Homer 212). This exhibits Odysseus’ character as always desiring to find a way to conquer the problem even though the problem might seem out of his reach. After Odysseus and his men pass the monster Skylla, he tells to his men to keep on going and Eurylochus complains, “Are you flesh and blood Odysseus to endure more than a man
An epic hero exhibits great leadership qualities. One of these qualities is having aplomb in critical times. This is exemplified when Odysseus is trapped in the cave of the Cyclops, a giant one-eyed
Bravery was probably one of the traits Odysseus was known for best. Without his bravery, the story most-likely wouldn't have been as exciting and suspenseful as it was. One of the situations that displayed this trait was when they landed on the
Odysseus’ courage in the cave of the Cyclops Polyphemus banishes his crew’s trepidation and eventually gets them out of there. When Polyphemus returns to the cave after capturing them, Odysseus takes the risk to get the Cyclops’ attention so he can manipulate the one-eyed giant into drinking the potent wine. Odysseus’ bravery is catching and he inspires those with him. Once Polyphemus has passed out, Odysseus and a few other men stab the giant’s eye. This quote of Odysseus inspiring his men in the Cyclops’ cave shows how Odysseus bravery never abandons him even in a situation where it seems he cannot win: “Now, at last, I thrust our stake into a bed of embers to get it red-hot and rallied all my comrades ‘Courage—no panic, no one hang back now!’” (9. 420-422). Odysseus’ boldness ultimately leads to an escape. Without the courage that never seems to
In The Odyssey, Odysseus portrays an important trait to the story, perseverance. His perseverance really stands out as something that he has and always will have. On his long journey home, he never gives up and just stays where he is, no matter how tempting. He always manages to push through and keep getting closer to his goal of returning home. An example of when he does this is when he is faced with the challenge of getting past Skylla and Kharybdis. He knows that either path will kill at least some of his men and possibly him, but he knows he has to keep going. "And all this time,/ in travail,
Odysseus embodies courage in that he has the ability to something that maybe considered frightening to another. Odysseus’s boldness comes at full force first when he fights along his men in the Trojan War, then it makes another appearance in the second act when he fights against a man eating Cyclops. Another great display of courage he portrays is when he takes his men into battle he leads them in strong fighting with them and not just standing idly by while each of them are picked off. Odysseus lead his men into battle, fought a Cyclops, and fought in the Trojan War, he was not frightened, but strong against his many ordeals.
He thinks about others before himself; he takes responsibility for his men and wants to protect them even if it means risking his own life. He demonstrated god-like qualities and morals to inspire his men. Odysseus is arrogant, brave, and wise, however he is sentimental. He states that, “Sometimes you need to serve in order to lead” (Odysseus). Odyssey has done his job after defeating the Trojans, so the reason why he went to war was to encourage liege lord, Agamemnon, and now that it is over, he can return to Ithaca.
