There is a question that arises in today’s society: What is fear? By definition, fear is “a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc.,whether the threat is real or imagined; the feeling or condition of being afraid” (“Fear”) . I wonder how does fear feel like. Fear is a word that cannot be expressed but is experienced first-hand. I believe fear is our imagination that is created by our personal lives, pictures, and nightmares. Regardless of the era humans are born, we are already incited by fear. Some examples of my fears are spiders, snakes, and heights. For me, I have several fears; my biggest fears are the fear of the unknown. I have these fears for a long time. In the George Orwell 1984 and the movie The Purge: …show more content…
VSauce explain that the reason we are afraid is because of “the terror of ambiguity”(VSauce, 2016). Ambiguity is “the possibility of interpreting an expression in two or more distinct ways”("Ambiguity"). For example, “a mask hides the true emotion and intentions of the person underneath. [We do not know] if the person wearing that mask is threat or not” (VSauce, 2016). My psychological change is the reason for arachnophobia, ophiophobia and acrophobia. In 1984, children are used as spies and Winston states, "With those children, he thought, that [Mrs.Parsons] must lead a life of terror. Another year or two they would be watching her day and night for symptoms of orthodoxy." (Orwell 26). These fears prevent me from doing new things. It puts “a mask” to hide my intention and emotions of my fears; by putting on “a mask”, my intention and emotion is unsure of what to do when facing my fears. This is the “terror of ambiguity” VSauce is talking; he talks about our uncertainty of our emotions to our fear. Everytime, I try to face my fears, there is a voice saying “do not do it” and convinced me to back out. Similarly in 1984, Mrs.Parson fears her children because her children are spies and report any crime to BIG BROTHER. She cannot do anything because her children constantly watch her. She following the “terror of ambiguity” because one side of her conscience wants to fight for freedom and her children, but other
Fear, something we all have when we’re born, something that teaches us what is bad and what we shouldn’t do out of not wanting to be in trouble. Even though it’s an obstacle, we hold back, it can create something, either magnificent or terrible. How do other people react to such a creation once released into the world? Do they love it, hate it, or just plain terrified of it?
What is fear? Fear is that pit in the back of your stomach, your anticipation to do something, overwhelming yourself for no reason or a nightmare you might have. Most of the time people blame their fear on other people. This is inaccurate; a person only controls there own fears. A person's brain can
Orwell is making a statement that describes how fear is a way stronger force than love. The Party works to rebel all physical temptations of love, and depersonalizes sex to the point where it is referred to as a "duty to the Party". Some Party organizations even advocate complete abstinence and procreation only through insemination. Fear is an element of human nature that cannot be changed fear has always existed within every human being and always will. The fear of physical pain, fear of the loss of something, fear of commitment, or fear of consequences.
Everybody has a different perspective on fear and everybody is affected differently. The Mental Health Foundation stated that, “Fear can last for a short time and then pass but it can also last much longer and stay with us. In some cases it can take over our lives, affecting appetite, sleep, and concentration for long periods of time. Fear stops us from travelling, going to work or school, or even leaving the house.” This quote shows that fear does not affect people as much as it does to others. Although, fear can affect people for a long time which can cause them to stay isolated from others. There are many types of fears and some examples of fears include: the fear of the number 13, the fear of spiders, the fear of heights, and many others. There are hundreds of fears and many people have these fears and everybody is affected differently.
.Not all living things go through the idea of fear; in fact, humans are the only creature capable of think about this concept in this way. Fear can makes us think of all the possibilities of the future to come. When we think about our destiny, our instinct tells us to start preparing and dreading what's to come. Humans visualize the worst possibility and usually over-prepare themselves and family.
Most people simply think of fear as what people are afraid of. However, it is so much more than than. Have you ever been afraid of something? This was likely shaped by past experiences.
I just wanted to sleep and not wake up. I mean what are the chances of still being alive in the next three days. The Party by now probably knows that i'm hiding the diary... it's a just a matter of time till i'm gone. In 1948 by George Orwell the theme seen is, fear is power that others have over you.
Based on events from the past and what is shown in 1984, I believe a society focused on fear and hatred will not be able to flourish. O’Brien argued, in the novel, that The Party has control over external reality because nothing exists outside the mind, only The Party exists (Orwell). Winston responded to this by saying that a society that lives on fear and hatred would have no vitality, it would disintegrate, and it would commit suicide (Orwell). I personally agree with Winston because a society needs to breathe or have freedoms in order to survive. In essence, I believe a society based on hate and suffering, such as what O’Brien described, could not exist for long, and the intoxication of power and thrill of victory could not be enough motivation for people to continue living without friendship or love, and I could not live in such a suffering society.
George Orwell’s key objective throughout his novel, 1984, was to convey to his readers the imminent threat of the severe danger that totalitarianism could mean for the world. Orwell takes great measures to display the horrifying effects that come along with complete and dominant control that actually comes along with totalitarian government. In Orwell’s novel, personal liberties and individual freedoms that are protected and granted to many Americans today, are taken away and ripped from the citizen’s lives. The government takes away freedom and rights from the people so that the ruling class (which makes up the government), while reign with complete supremacy and possess all power.
In both Red Scarf Girl by Ji-Li Jiang and “Waiting For The World to Change” by John Mayer, the writers conveys that fear can allow new paths to be dangerous. The main character in Red Scarf Girl is Ji-Li Jiang, as a 12 year old girl, she lived in China during the Cultural Revolution. In this time period Chairman Mao,the communist party, want to get rid of all old tradition, old ideas, and old habits. The Jiang family was very wealthy and their status was high, but when the society brought out that the Jiang family were being treated differently than them, the family's lives changed “I could night fight anymore… but I never gave up” (Jiang 267). This new path brought not only fear to her family, but also hardships that caused her family and friends
Fear is a feeling induced by experience, perceived danger, or watching a frightening traumatic accident. The fear responses arise from the perception of danger and ultimately a change in behaviour, such as fleeing, or hiding or from perceived traumatic events. Every person has fears and different fears may be different adaptations that have been useful in our evolutionary past. I have fears too, and sometime, I feel embarrassed to intersperse my fear with others.
Fear is a feeling we’ve all felt before and it’s completely humane to feel that way from time to time. Mainly, people have great fears that interfere with their daily life and it becomes a problem. The issue with fears is
We humans especially, fear many different things: death, disease, old age, commitment, noises in the night, pain, responsibility, work, being too fat or too thin, or any number of other things. Some of our fears are reasonable and rationale, like the fear for our safety so we lock our doors at night, never walk alone on dark streets, and
Another cause for people having fear is the past experiences they have had. Generally, if something bad has happened to somebody, they try to forget about it and/or they try to make sure it never happens again. However, in doing so, they still have a subconscious fear that something similar to the terrible event they’ve experienced may somehow manage to happen again, especially if there are a few similarities between the past event and the current situation. For example, if a man had surgery for his heart to perform better and he nearly died, he may be very reluctant to ever have surgery to his heart or any other body part(s) again.
