Degenerated Art was a term adopted by Nazi regime (Adolph Hitler) in Germany to describe the Modern Art. Hitler himself was an artist; he wanted to enter to The Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna but he was rejected twice. After coming to power Hitler banned arts that was un-German, Jewish, or Communist in nature in his points and named them Degenerated Art. Nazis detained art works that were labeled degenerated from the museums and private collections. Many of the art works were destroyed but 650 got displayed in the Degenerated Art Exhibition. He was a member of the Berlin Dada group. After joining the military 1914 and observing the horrors of war as a soldier in World War I, Grosz focused his art on social critique. George immigrated to United States to leave with his wife, Eva Peter and two children after losing his citizenship in Germany. In order to distance himself from his German roots, and to proclaim his desirability for American culture, Georg Groß had his name legally changed to George Grosz. His fame rapidly spread after display at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Even though with his position with the people in Germany and his significant respects in America, Grosz was forced to teach at the Arts Students League.
