In John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men there are two main characters named George and Lennie. George and Lennie were trying to live the American Dream. The American Dream in the Great Depression was to own land. So they are trying to get a job at a ranch. They do this because they are trying to get enough money so that they can buy their own land and so that they can grow their own crops and raise their some animals. Once George and Lennie get to the ranch they were first introduced by an old man named Candy. Candy then helps lead them to the owner of the ranch so that they can get to work. After they are able to work they get settled in the place they will be sleeping in. While George and Lennie are getting everything ready so that they can go to sleep, they are introduced by Curley’s wife. And once George sees her he immediately thinks she is trouble and tells Lennie to ignore her as much as possible. The next day George and Lennie get to work once they get up. Once they got to work Lennie was one of the strongest men at the ranch and the other workers couldn’t keep up with him. Lennie has been playing with the puppy ever since and then the puppy died because Lennie was petting it too hard, then he tried to bury it in the barn. While Lennie was trying to bury the puppy Curley's wife entered the barn and asked what did he bury, and Lennie got spooked because George said not to talk to her and walked to the other side of the barn, and she saw the dead puppy. Lennie didn’t want her to tell anybody. So Lennie and Curley’s wife were talking and she told Lennie to stroke her hair and Lennie couldn’t stop and she tried running away and Lennie grabbed her by the neck and accidentally killed her by snapping her neck. If Lennie wasn’t around, George would have had an easier time when not trying to constantly take care of Lennie. Trying to get him out of trouble and making sure he survives and earns
Lennie, realizing he’s done a bad thing, runs out. Remembering what George said in the beginning of the story, Lennie runs out to the spot and is going to wait for George. Later, Candy finds the dead body and informs George. They both instantly know it was Lennie and worry because they both conclude that Curley would lynch Lennie. In the scene, candy asks if their dreams of the ranch are off and George never fully answered the question only saying since Lennie believed in this ranch he started to have hope as well.
Lennie said very excitedly, As the days go by they had already gotten their little house and moved in the things they owned. George got a job just like he said. Not only did they have what they wanted but Lennie lived a happy life there with George and Candy. He got to tend the rabbits and get another pup. George did find out eventually about the pup Lennie killed bouncing him hard, george had to get it out of lennie what happened to the pup back on the ranch.
George had thoughts about getting a house up on a mountain where he can be by himself but he also didn't want to feel alone. Slim has been helping George recover while everyone worried about themselves, Curly didn't like George after what Lennie did, Crooks was living in the barn still by himself, and Candy would visit Lennie's grave once a week. Later on in the story, George and Lennie talk about the dream of the farm and Candy overhears them. Candy likes the idea, and wants to work with them. He says to George and Lennie “S’pose I went in with you guys. I could cook and tend the chickens and hoe the garden some. How’d that be?”
She took him when he was a baby and raised him up. When his Aunt Clara died, Lennie just come along with me out workin’. Got kinda used to each other after a little while” (40). George is sharing how Lennie and him knew each other and how much Lennie grew on him in such a small amount of time and how much he really appreciates Lennie. Lennie and George are talking about how their going to move and start a farm while Candy is listening “An’ rabbits, George.”
Lennie then looked outside the barn doors to see what was happening, Lennie then tried to bury the puppie underneath the barn hay. As he was trying to burry it, Curley's wife happened to walk into the barn and started to have a conversation with him. Sometimes in life you and your friend gone bump head. In Mice and Men by John Steinbeck George and Lennie had some ups and downs, George and Lennie had a big dream about have their own farm. That’s what kept them together. George and Lennie have a complex and some difficulties in their relationship that make them different from other people Lennie and George have a dream that keeps them together.
(Pathos) He has been working on this ranch for years and when he finds out George and Lennie plan on buying a farm, he ask if he can come with them. Candy infers that if he can give George and Lennie most of the money to buy the farm, they will let Candy join them. (Inference-Term) After Candy offers to pay for most of the farm, George has faith that they can finally get the farm within the month if they put all their savings together (Steinbeck 61). Candy continues to have optimism that he will be able to escape the harsh conditions of the ranch and be able to move to George and Lennie’s farm with them.
When they got to the ranch they met a guy named Candy, Candy was of a older man ,who had a older dog as well a dog that he grew from when he was a pup. So Candy leads them to the boss to explain the reason of the late arrival, the Boss then push that under the rug and said to get straight to work. So that is when Candy went ahead and showed Lennie and George where they will be staying. As the movie goes on and they starts to meet the other workers on the ranch , And starts to do their job. You think everything went nice and smooth but it wasn't like that.
George and Lennie were talking about the farm and how it was going to be. Candy proposes “s’pose I went in with you guys… I ain't much good but I can cook and tend the chickens and how the garden some” (59). Candy does not want to spend the rest of his life on the ranch either. When he learns that he could get a farm with George and Lennie if he works through the end of the month his hopes grew big. Candy came to Crooks’ room where Crooks and Lennie were talking and says “tell ya what, Lennie. I been figuring out about them rabbits” (74). Candy spends his time thinking about what the best way to do things moving forwards is so that all the men can still live a successful life after they get the farm they are hoping for. Candy becomes George and Lennie’s friend because he hopes that this will get him closer to having a farm of his own.
Falling Action: George says he wants Lennie to stay with him. He comments that ranch workers are always lonely, but he and Lennie are different because they have one another.
These two have a true friendship, Lennie is there to keep George sane, while George takes care of Lennie. Additionally, they both enjoy talking to each other which made them less lonely than all of the others on the ranch. Before they arrive at the ranch, George tells Lennie, “With us it ain’t like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us.”(pg
Curly was extremely hostile towards the newcomers,especially Lennie. George predicts Curly will present future problems and advises Lennie to keep out of Curley’s way. George is trying to keep Lennie from getting into trouble again, so when they meet Curley’s flirtatious wife, George advises Lennie never to talk to her. Later that day, they also meet some of the other ranch hands, Slim, Whit and Carlson.
