Over 2.5 million African-American men registered for the draft, George Adolphus Davis was drafted and served as a Mess Cook in World War II. It was 1942, when general service was opened for African Americans to serve in other capacities. Before entering the military, he was very unsure and anxious about joining. He didn’t know what to expect because there was still a lot going on in the United States regarding race. He went in with the expectations of the whites being cruel and harsh to him because of the color of his skin. He mentioned they were a few nice whites, but most were cruel. George Adolphus Davis eventually registered into the military and served two and a half years during World War II. He was assigned to Camp Lee, Virginia now

Living life to the fullest is how Shelby Davis would express her life. She lives for every minute of the day and continues to do that still. Shelby expresses her life through her daily activities and through love. Shelby loves what she does in life and is continuing to let her work grow amongst people.
Ruthener Davis and Kenneth Davis were two waves. They constantly crashed against each other in an endless cycle of slamming doors and raised voices. Perhaps it was because they married young; Ruthener was only fifteen. Neither one of them were rich. They lived together in Newark, NJ in a rundown house with six kids. Anyone with those types of pressures might've came to hating their once significant other. Kenneth would hit his wife, and she would slash their tires. They'd scream and curse at each other in front of their children, until finally, Kenneth had had enough. Ruthener begged him to stay, but he'd have none of it. Kenneth left his wife, but not his children, whose social events he still attended, whose house he still paid for, and whose

Thomas Davis is entering his 11th season with the Carolina Panthers and he has been a great leader and even better player! He is one of the best linebackers in the NFL today and an inspiration for every football player that goes through any adversity Davis has torn his ACL three times and come back better than ever each and every time. Here's what I mean last season he had 100 tackles and two forced fumbles and in his career he has 730 tackles 13 forced fumbles and six interceptions! Amazing what he's been able to do on the football field and now with Luke Kuechly the Carolina Panthers have the best linebacker duo in the NFL and I don't think it's close. He is definitely the veteran leader that helped lead this defense for years and I'm glad
Benjamin O. Davis, Jr.'s outstanding leadership and the skill of the black troops were revealed by the 332nd’s achievements. There is no denying that black men can fight now. Integration is just around the corner. Because of the accomplishments of the 322nd (Tuskegee Airmen), the Deputy Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Idwall Edwards, conducted a racial segregation study on the U.S. Air Force. He encouraged racial integration to the Chief of Staff with the Tuskegee Airmen and Davis, Jr.’s performance as evidence that black men were as capable as white men in war (Gropman).
Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. was born December 18, 1912 in Washington D.C. His father, Benjamin O. Davis, Sr. was one of the few African-American officers in the U.S. Army. Davis, Jr. was appointed to the U.S. Military Academy in 1932 by Rep. Oscar S. De Priest, the only black congressman at that time. At West Point he endured ostracism from both classmates and superiors who wanted to see him fail. He persevered and graduated 35th in a class of 276 in 1936. He was the fourth African-American graduate in the Academy’s history. Upon commissioning he and his father became the only two black officers in the army. His application to the Army Air Corps was refused because the Air Corps did not accept African-Americans.
The African American society has been deprived of their privileges as well as their rights and have been fighting for them since the past time. They were enslaved, poverty-stricken, underprivileged, neglected and discriminated from other parts of the society. During the Civil War which occurred in 1861, the African Americans were denied to join the Union army. Alfred M. Green, who was a powerful speaker, delivered a speech in Philadelphia in April 1861 to motivate the black society to be enlisted in the war. Therefore, Green uses tone, diction as well as a pathos appeal to persuade his fellow African Americans to join the Union forces.
For centuries African American have been struggled against racial in America. During World War II the U.S. government asked for volunteers to join the army of defense, over 2.5 million of black men registered for the draft World, around 1 million served as draftees or volunteers in the armed forces within all branches. But didn’t received the same opportunity to serve in the same manner as white soldiers. They were to segregated combat support groups. In 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt and civil rights organizations pressured U.S Navy to recruited blacks for service.
Before WORLD WAR I, military service represented a source of black pride. Black educators, clergymen, and the press frequently referred to Negro heroes of America’s past wars. After the Civil War, the U.S, Army maintained four regular Negro regiments –the 9th and 10th Calvary and the 24th and 25th Infantry. These units included veterans of the civil war and the frontier Indian fighting regiments. Retired sergeants often became respected, conservative leaders in their communities. This history set a foundation for black support and involvement in America’s future wars.
W.E.B. DuBois’ “Returning Soldiers,” an editorial piece written in May of 1919 for the NAACP’s publication The Crisis lays out for not just returning soldiers, but for African-Americans as a whole that the war is not over. While the Great War of 1914-1918 may have ended, there is still a greater war to continue to fight on the American homefront. “Returning Soldiers” calls out the United States government on the charges against its people as seen by DuBois and reiterates and rejuvenates the reader for the fight it still needs to take on. The black man soldier may have escaped the battlefields of France and now be able to shed the uniform that symbolizes the systematic injustices he faced, but upon returning, in his “civil garb” he is still a soldier, only in a different military.
Despite having dealt with unwritten laws known as the, “Jim Crow” laws, many African American Soldiers still decided, without being drafted, to enlist in the military, only to be met with more segregation, separation and deference. Many of them worked in supporting roles in the service. One such supporting role was called the Service Force. George was one of those soldiers serving in the Service Force. George believes the Service Force was just as important as any other role in the military. He states, “I can work with a certain satisfaction that my work behind the ‘lines’ is the only direct support that the men ‘Up Front’ have.” I believe George had the hoped that when returning from the War, African Americans would have earned equality and respect from their fellow countrymen. In writing a letter to his sister, George states, “we hope that the American people won’t forget that if we can work and fight for the Democratic Way, that we are entitled to enjoy every privilege it affords when this mess is
In doc 1, we see that an African American newspaper writer writes an article on the war. The newspaper seems to be a newspaper for blacks so the writer targets black readers as well. In the article, the writer talks about how hard times are and how they’ve never been in a situation like the Spanish American War. He states that allowing African Americans to the join the military to fight this war is the key to this wars success. He supports blacks joining the military and also tries to encourage blacks to not be afraid and join. It’s believed that having them join can end the racial hate between the whites and the blacks therefore, overseas expansion would result in positivity. Joining together as forces can help unite all in this war to end all wars. They thought that maybe after the war the United States would accept every color and not discriminate any longer.
