Darfur is the western region of the African country of Sudan. Currently, the people of Darfur have been continually attacked by the Sudanese army and by proxy-militia controlled by the Sudanese government. Families are being uprooted and starved, children tormented and murdered by the thousands and women raped without punishment. Innocent civilians in Darfur continue to be victims of unthinkable brutality. Many people have become homeless and seek protection in refugee camps in Chad. Yet despite its outward appearance, Darfur has a vast ethnic diversity and a complex, ancient system of resolving conflict. The citizens of Darfur were doing nothing wrong, they were minding their own business. The government begs to differ. The government wanted to use the land for oil exploration. They didn’t ask the Darfuri people to use their land, they just took over. Men, women and children were slaughtered and raped because they didn’t give up the land. The government “undertake to prevent and punish” (Raphael Lemkin pg1) which is the people of Darfur was a where of what was going on. They didn’t move their stuff they just stayed and fought in what they believed in. I believe many people would have just grabbed their valuables and taken their family and went somewhere else, but they didn’t want to do that because their neighbors were not leaving.

Do you think its fair, which in 1933-1945; 11 million people lost their lives just because of their race and religion? Do you think its right, for other countries just to stand by and not care for the survival of the people in concentration camps in Germany and Poland? Even before the holocaust, people were killed due to racism and prejudice. As we look back on those days, we know how bad the Holocaust was. People were killed in many brutal ways such as shootings, gas, and being burned alive. It’s terrible to think of the horrors people faced in their final moments in the holocaust. The Darfur Genocide started on February 26, 2003. This genocide is still continuing till this day. Darfur Genocide is the mass slaughter of Darfuri men, women, and children in Sudan. This is happening because of the oppression of Darfur’s non-Arab population.. The people started to revolt and wanted the government to stop the oppressing of the non–Arab population. The government did not listen and got violent with the people. When the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) started to attack the government, the government responded with there own attack. In recent times, the media has highlighted the genocide that has been occurring in Darfur, Sudan. Darfur, Sudan is a country roughly the size of the state of Texas (Darfur Scores, n.d.). Genocide is the systematic killing of an entire ethnic group of people from a national, ethnic, or religious group, or an attempt to do away with them all (Darfur Scores, n.d.). Beginning around 2003, according to Darfur Scores (n.d.), “the Sudanese government in Khartoum and the government-sponsored Janjaweed militia have used rape, displacement, organized starvation, threats against aid workers and mass murder. Violence, disease, and displacement continue to kill thousands of innocent Darfurians every month.”

In 1994, the Polish-Jewish lawyer Raphael Lemkin created the word “genocide” by combining geno, from the Greek word for race, and –cide, from the Latin word for killing. A simple definition would be “a coordinated plan of different actions aiming at the destruction of essential foundations of the life of national groups, with the aim of annihilating the groups themselves” (United States Holucaust Memorial Museum, n.d).

The Darfur Genocide refers to the endless deaths, rape cases, and abductions that the civilians of a village called “Darfur” have endured for the past 12 years. All of these horrendous cases have been on contempt of a ruthless militia called Janjaweed. This Arab group of soldiers is committing these treacherous crimes based off of the ludicrous ideology that the Arab race is unsurpassable, and supreme to the Darfurian race. The name, “Janjaweed” translates directly to the name “Horseman”, and justly so. This armed group literally invades Darfurian farmland on horseback. The word genocide was created by Raphael Lemkin, a Polish Jewish lawyer who fled the Nazi of Poland and arrived in the United States in 1941. As a boy, Lemkin had been scared when he learned of the Turkish massacre of hundreds of thousands of Armenians during World War I. As an adult, he set out to come up with a term to describe Nazi crimes against European Jews during World War II, and to enter that term into the world of international law in the hopes of preventing and punishing such horrific crimes against innocent people. In 1944, he coined the term “genocide” by combining genos, the Greek word for race or tribe, with the Latin suffix cide to kill.

As of 2003, the Darfur genocide is being carried out by the Sudanese armed forces and funded Arab militias known as the Janjaweed. These militias are historic rivals of the rebel groups known as the Sudanese Liberation Movement (SLM), and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM). Acts of genocide have occurred for centuries even though the term genocide did not appear until the twentieth century. In 1948 the United Nations General Assembly passed a law that legally defined genocide and ruled it as an illegal act. In Rwanda for example, the Hutu-led government embraced a new program that called for the country’s Hutu people to murder anyone that was a Tutsi (Gourevitch, 6). The term genocide means the mass murder of a specific race, tribe, or group of people with the intention of eliminating them as a whole. One genocide that is still going on today is the Genocide in Darfur. The murders started in 2003 in Southern Sudan, the largest country in Africa where thousands of Darfuri people have been massacred.

Genocide is one of the most frightening terms one could hear, sending shivers down your spine just to hear the word. Genocide is the intent of extermination of a national, ethnical, racial or religious group. One of the best known Genocide’s to the world is known as the Holocaust. Germans exterminated over 6 million Jews in just a couple of years. Families were torn apart, and some of the worst things you could ever do to a human being were done in these times. After the Holocaust everyone said Never Again, but it has happened over and over. If we follow the steps to preventing genocides, we can stop history from repeating itself and keep the people of the world safe.

What a genocide? The term itself didn’t exist prior to 1944. Genocide is referred to as the intent to destroy or eliminate a group through violent crimes. One of the prime examples of a genocide is the holocaust, which was a governmental systematic persecution and the murder of 6 million Jews by the Nazis. Like the holocaust, genocides posses eight stages known as classification, symbolization, dehumanization, organization, polarization, preparation, extermination and denial. These characteristics will ultimately define if situation was a genocide or not. Similarities and differences for the eight stages of the genocide can be seen between the dark Holocaust, and the cruel War in Darfur.
