Genie the Wild Child Essay

Genie is a wild child who found in LA on 1970, she is a very extreme case of neglected the caretaking from adult. Her father believed she is retarder She spent her first thirteen years on tiding at the potty chair and still wearing diaper, she had never see, listen, being taught of anything in her life. For the past many years she had been isolation and lack of adult care make her the way she is right now.

The film “The Sapphires” directed by Wayne Blair, is based around and set in the era of the Vietnam war. Belonging whether it’s race or love is a big part of this film and constantly appears in different ways. One of the main characters, Dave Lovelace throughout the film is constantly rejected as he tries to belong and be a part of the group.

The Wizard of Oz is an early film but editing is used quite a bit. First off, the absence of color in the beginning and the ending of the film. This sets an overall feeling of Dorothy being home. Next the film turns to color once Dorothy dreams of being in a different world, the color, yet again, set an overall mood for Dorothy in this new world “Over the rainbow.” The first steps of Dorothy being in the world of The Wizard of Oz gives off an example of inside and outside editing. The shot begins with a close up of Dorothy’s face and the camera slowly moves out to show everything else around Dorothy, which was the start of the yellow brick road and Munchkin land. After the viewer see all of that, the camera moves back in to Dorothys face when she says that they are not in Kansas anymore. The Red Pony by author John Steinbeck is a very notable book for young adults. The central and recurring theme of the four stories told within this short novel is life and death. The stories also deal with conflict between old and new. Unlike most novels for young adults this book is different because John Steinbeck does not try to soften or hide old age and death, but instead presents these themes as they are in reality. The stories tell how the main character, Jody Tiflin, becomes more responsible as he deals with the disappointments and sadness, as well as the successes of real life.

The movie “Wild” is based on Cheryl Strayed’s autobiography about her trek along the Pacific Crest Trail in 1995. The story is set on the Pacific crest trail, including a wide variety of climates including: deserts, snow covered mountains, and tropical forests. Along her journey on the trail, the movie flashes back to several traumas that drove her into the wild, in order to reinvent herself as a strong independent woman once again, no longer bound by guilt, shame, and regret. This is a movie that embraces the healing values of nature and how it can help an individual gain a broader perspective on life.

What makes us humans is who we are around with. Most of us grow up with two parents, maybe some siblings around us. Babies follow the concept of, "Monkey see, monkey do,” Mimicking what their parents do without question. We grow up with people eating food using forks and spoons; we don't question why; we just do it. But what happens when you don't grow up around people who normally act as your role model as to what to do in specific situations? When the discovery of Genie came to light, there were many unknown facts about her that came known. Genie was locked in a room for about 11 straight years harnessed in a toddlers potty seat and at night she slept in sleeping bag in a baby crib which was made of wire and wood. She had nothing for entertainment, no one to talk,not much to eat, even nothing wear than just diapers. In this boring and alone environment, Genie did not learn any language and by the age 13 she understood only 20 words. “The only words addressed to her were angry ones,she could say "stopit," "nomore," "no," and a few other negative words” (unknown par 3). Genie was never allowed to talk and whenever she made noises she got bitten up.

Fairy tales are timeless entities that will always be relevant in people’s lives. Fairy tales and stories offer entertainment, advice, and moral examples. The creation of fairy tales is important in the development of social norms. Children everywhere would read fairy tales and learn from them. As a result, these fairy tales are translated into multiple languages and allows people with different backgrounds to understand and relate to the story. People take these stories and adapt them to life around them. Within these adaptations of the same story, it is normal to observe slight differences that contribute as evidence in identifying the culture or societies in which these stories come from. Whether it is the slang of the dialogue or the change of location, modern producers and writers are known to take these classic stories and adding a significant twist to adjust to their cultural agenda. The movie, The Princess and the Frog, is a modern example of writers and directors creating a modern twist to the popular story of the Brother Grimm’s The Frog King. The Princess and the Frog and The Frog King both encode the mores, values, and beliefs of the cultures of the societies from which they come because, even though they both have similar plot ideas, the differences of the location and the differences of the overall specific plotlines attribute to understanding how their own specific cultures influence the adaptation and the actual story.

     When examining adaptations of fairytales you must look at the original source. This can be a very difficult task because with fairytales we never really know where the original came from. I will base my paper on the theory that the original tale of Cinderella comes from the Grimm Brothers version of Ashputtle. In comparison we will examine two movies. First there is the Disney version Cinderella. Secondly we will look at the movie 'Ever After'.
