Genetically modified organisms have been an huge issue for the world for a lot of people. Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, are organisms like plants and animals that have their genes altered so they can be more nutritious and prevent diseases. Humans have selected plants for desirable characteristics since the dawn of agriculture. At first, the only way to improve crop plants was to collect seeds from the best performing individuals for planting the next year. Once plant reproduction was better understood, people selectively bred plants to create offspring that were hardier, larger, more flavorful, or more disease resistant than their predecessors. In the early twenty-first century, in the age of genetically modified organisms, the …show more content…
However, the problem still is that not every state in the U.S. still does not require labeling of GMO foods. There are people out there that need and want to know what is in their food. They have every right to know what is put into their food. Since 1992, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has required labeling of gmo foods only if the food has a nutritional or food safety property that is significantly different from what consumers would expect of that food (P. Byrne). For example, if a new gmo food includes stuff like protein, calcium, iron, etc. then the gmo foods would be labeled. With gmos needing to be labeled, are they safe to eat? Unfortunately, many of the gmo foods that are most popular are with children’s foods. According to Down to Earth, cereals, snack bars, snack boxes, cookies, processed lunch meats, and crackers all contain large amounts of high-risk food ingredients. So all the Frosted Flakes, Nutty bars, ham, turkey, and fruit snacks that kids eat so much of are genetically modified. Many scientists claim that GMOs cause no harm to the human body. GMOs are made to help make the product more nutritious and more healthy to eat. However, some scientists want to find how some GMOs can be harmful. Thankfully, thats nothing to be worried about because they cause no harm at all to the human body. In fact, based on what little is known about GMOs, many
In todays society, people are more concerned about what they put into their body. They eat healthy and maintain a stable diet, but unknown to a number of these people is their food may have been tampered with in the form of Genetically Modified Organisms or, for short, GMO's. Genetically Modified Organisms are plants or animals whose DNA has been altered to favor a certain characteristic or trait which is already in the DNA. This includes enhancing the DNA in plants to make them bigger, invincible to pests, or invincible towards weeds. Although, the reason why GMO's are a controversial topic is because of lack of knowledge. Genetically Modified Organisms are risky and potentially to dangerous to be handling because of the unknown side effects
A GMO is a genetically modified organism that goes through the process of genetic engineering. This is when genes of one organism are extracted, altered, and then artificially placed into another organism to then grow. We typically see GMOs in the food we consume every day. These foods include fruits and vegetables, however the most common organisms that are genetically engineered include, corn, soy, and cotton. It is ultimately the unnatural cross breeding of plants, animals, bacteria, and virus genes (Non-GMO Project). But now why is there a debate for placing a label to notify consumers of GMOs in their foods? Do we know the potential harm that GMOs can cause? We have the right to know what we are putting into our bodies and what is found in our everyday foods.
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), have turned into an exceptionally questionable theme here in our reality today. GMOs are life forms that have been developed through a quality joining methodologies of biotechnology or genetics building. This is a moderately new type of science which permits DNA from an individual species to be injected into another species in a research center. This produces blends of plant, creature, microscopic organisms, and viral qualities that don 't show up in conventional crossbreeding systems or found in nature. GMO’s have been liked to several health-related issues, and should be banned by the FDA (Genetically Modified Organisms, N.D. ).
Two of the artifacts that I found most intriguing were Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People and Zora Neale Hurston’s “How it Feels to be Colored Me.” Not only do both pieces call upon individuals to think beyond their base instincts before action, but they also illustrate leadership by magnanimity and benevolent acknowledgment in trying situations. One of the virtues that Carnegie discusses in gaining influence is allowing the other man to save his face, or to maintain respect and avoid humiliation. In her piece, I believe Hurston, despite describing an emotionally charged situation, did an exceptional job allowing her opponents to save face. By doing so, she exhibited a rare and admirable ideal of leadership as described by Carnegie.
Dr. Dan Jacobson a Professor at Stanford University has presented what he calls a “roadmap” to getting California to be run completely on renewable sources of energy by 2050. No “clean coal”, no natural gas, no nuclear, no biofuels, and no new hydroelectric. The golden state would be powered by wind, water, solar, geothermal, among a few others. And although i would love nothing more than to see california running completely on renewables by 2050. I think a transition completely off of fossil fuels cannot happen soon enough. Fossil fuels are toxic, hazardous to transport, disastrous to dig out of the ground and contribute to an accelerated warming of the planet. Jacobson notes that his map will create over 200,000 net 40 year jobs, reduce mortalities associated with air quality, and significantly cut worldwide carbon dioxide emissions. I do not disagree with any of these facts, becoming completely fossil fuel independent will lead to better health for ourselves, the earth, and the economy. think Dr. Jacobson makes some vital errors in neglecting to mention the much needed energy paradigm shift and in not addressing the issues associated with production of the renewable energy components.
Foods with GMO ingredients need to be labeled because they are bad for your health. GMOs are not proven to be safe in the long run. The FDA has not run any tests to tell whether or not GMOs are safe. GMOs are linked to birth defects, and to Gluten disorders. According to USRTK, “ The FDA does not require independent pre-market safety testing for genetically engineered food. As a matter of practice, the agrichemical companies submit their own studies to the FDA as part of a
Do you want to know what you are eating? Have you gotten sick over the past few years and not known why? Many people have gotten sick over the increase of food products with GMOs within them. Over the years many have argued that GMOs aren’t what is causing the increase in death and the decrease in birth, but many say it is the problem. GMOs should be labeled on our foods today because of the amount of health problems, and consumers want to know what they are eating. After all, it is what is going into our bodies.
Genetically modified crops are an incredibly important issue that everyone should be aware of since it is something we are exposed to at a daily basis. Genetically modified crops also known as GM crops or Biotech crops has been one of the most heated debates of issues within our society. The debate about the safety, concerns and disadvantages of GM crops have raged since the mid 1990 's but this is due to the lack of knowledge of the general public. Many people are unaware of what the GM crops actually are and what they offer. Genetically modified crops are plants that are used in the agriculture and have been modified to initiate a new trait to plants that does not happen naturally in the species. These plants are modified using genetic engineering techniques to enhance desired traits. GM crops are made when genes of commercial interest are transferred from one organism to another.() There are many methods used for the production of GM crops but the two primary used for plant insertion are gene guns and agrobacterium tumefaciens. There are also three types of modifications which are transgenic, cisgenic, and subgenic plants. However, there are a number of issues that surround this controversial topic such as environmental, health, and economic concerns. Even though there are some worrying facts about GM crops people don 't realize the advantages or the ways it has helped humans as well as animals. There are many reasons why GM crops are proven
In the handbook titled GM Foods written by David E. Newton there is a section that explains why GM foods are not labelled, which caused outrage back in the 90s. This section written by Dr. Phill Jones who earned his PhD in physiology and pharmacology. He was also a patent attorney. For ten years he specialized in biological, chemical and medical inventions. He states that "The FDA's authority comes from the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, and according to the act, the FDA can only require information on a label that is accurate and material." He also mentions that the labeling of GM food would go against the FDA's regulation system. He mentions that the FDA uses science to evaluate the safety of foods and focuses on the characteristics more than how the plants were engineered. I would think that the safety of the food would also incorporate the plants' health, where and how it grows. He also claims that "advocates for GM food labeling claim that these labels would enable consumers to avoid health risks probably associated with GM foods." I believe people should be aware of what they are eating and have a choice to buy the products or not. We should know where the food is coming from and exactly what and how it is produced or modified. Without labeling people are forced to continue eating GM foods
Genetically Modified Organisms are organisms in which the genetic material or DNA has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally. This is done in order to get traits such as longer shelf life and pesticide resistance. They were developed because the perceived advantage is meant to translate into a product with a lower price, greater benefit, such as the durability and the nutritional value, or both. GMOs have not been proven to be safe as of yet. The long-term consequences of them on our health and environment have not been adequately investigated. There is a contentious debate today whether or not GMO labelling should be mandatory. There are arguments both for and against mandatory labelling across the world. Consumers have the right to know what is in their food. They should also be able to identify foods they wish to steer clear of. Some may also want to steer clear of GM foods for ethical or religious reasons. Consumers may be against mandatory labelling because those who wish to buy foods without GMOs already have the option to purchase them; organic of GMO-free. There is also debate stating if there were a nutritional difference or allergic characteristic in the GM foods, it would have to be labelled no matter what.
In the novel "A Farewell to Arms" by Ernest Hemingway the character, Frederic Henry is a round and dynamic character. At the beginning of the book, he is a man looking for a woman who could reach his needs, which meant it could have been anyone who he laid eyes because he wanted no feelings attached. Strictly for pleasure. Where I am at now in the book, he has so far changed for the better. He has become more of a caring man, and he is involved in a serious relationship, one that has gone beyond the physical attraction between the two, and looks like it is reaching more of a stronger level.
My first reason that GMO foods should be labeled is because, ”In 2013, the journal ‘Food and Chemical Toxicology’... linked the herbicide Roundup and Roundup-tolerant GM corn to cancer and premature death in rats.”(GMOs: Pros and Cons) If rats get sick from eating GMO foods, then imagine what it could be slowly doing to our bodies. We, as consumers, have the right to know exactly what we are eating and how that is affecting our bodies.
Genetically modified organisms, more commonly referred to as GMO’s, are greatly up for debate at this time. A GMO is the result of a laboratory process in which genes are transferred between organisms in order to obtain generally more desirable traits. (“Genetically Modified Organisms”). The process basically takes naturally unobtainable traits, and makes them obtainable through a highly controlled laboratory setting. Large companies produce these GMO’s with great profit, especially due to the great demand for their product, which allows for the production of a higher yield of crops. The advancement of technology has resulted in further development of the way genetic modification occurs. (“GMO FAQs”)
As of right now, U.S. law requires the labeling of food when,” there is a substantial difference in the nutritional or safety characteristics of a new food”; however, the FDA does not consider genetic modification to inflict any nutritional or overall harm to our health. With that being said, there is very little research regarding whether or not GM organisms actually do have the negative side effects that require a new food to be labeled.
Cyber bullying is going to end; schools are a big part in making this happen. Teachers need to practice proper technology use to put an end to cyberbullying. McAfee states that “...87% of youth have witnessed cyberbullying…” (“Cyberbullying Triples According to New McAfee ‘2014 Teens and the Screen study’” Para. 1) me being one of them. Not only does cyberbullying distress people it also leads to things such as depression “Ten studies examined the link between social media victimization and depression, and all of them found a connection” (Pappas Para. 10). The amount of criticism I see that people get online is unbelievable, and it devastates me that people could be so cruel so you can only imagine how they feel. Schools need to teach how to properly use technology to decrease cyberbullying. Teaching a technology class will educate students with knowledge that they will need in the real world and bring awareness to cyber bullying.
