In the story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Sanger Rainsford outsmarts General Zaroff in multiple ways. One of the ways he outsmarts him is by crawling high up in a tree and finding shelter there. Two other ways he outsmarts him is by using a Malay mancatcher to attempt and catch General Zaroff, the other tactic he uses is by creating a trap out of a knife and some grapevine to stop the hounds from attacking him. He also uses his top physical condition to jump off the cliff and into the sea to get even farther away from the hounds. Once Rainsford realized he was being hunted by Zaroff he had to collect his thoughts and draw on his previously learned knowledge on how he could outsmart or survive Zaroff. His first attempt was climbing high up in a tree and resting and finding shelter there, he ended up staying there overnight even though he didn’t get much sleep throughout the night. “He knew it would be insane to blunder on through the dark, even if he had the strength.” ( Connell 24). According to this in-text citation, this proves that he …show more content…
That night when the hunt ended, Zaroff’s hounds were chasing Rainsford. He did two things; he made a trap using grapevine and he also leapt off of the cliff into the sea where all the ships, boats, and yachts wreck. “ Then he leaped out far into the sea…” ( Connell 27). Three of the skills I talked about were all used in this short amount of time; his knowledge of hunting he used to make a trap out of grapevine and his knife, his ability to think and move quickly was used to make fast decisions before jumping off the cliff, and his activeness and fit lifestyle aided him in jumping off the cliff and into the sea. If it weren’t for him jumping into the sea, then the hounds would have surely gotten to
In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Connell, Richard, Sanger Rainsford outsmarts General Zaroff in many ways. Here are three ways he outsmarted General Zaroff. Sanger Rainsford makes traps that surprises General Zaroff. He climbed a tree to hide from Zaroff. Rainsford ended up defeating Zaroff. Here are the ways he did.
How did Rainsford become successful against General Zaroff’s manhunt? That’s the main question to ask. I will be giving three different ways of how Rainsford outsmarted or set traps for General Zaroff. There will be his first trick, first trap, and last trick. There are many others but those are the most interesting.
Sanger Rainsford is a civil man who respects human life in the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” written by Richard Connell. Rainsford thinks killing humans for sport is inhumane and murderous. On the other hand Zaroff is unintelligent, overconfident and finds hunting humans for sport is normal and entertaining. Rainsford also being knowledgeable and polite and is proved multiple times in the text by quotes, details and thoughts of Rainsford and General Zaroff.
“Hunting? Good God, General Zaroff what you speak of is murder” said Rainsford - Connell 27. Rainsford is a big game hunter who fell off this boat and ended up on an island, while he was there he met General Zaroff who used to be a general for the Russians. Rainsford will likely not hunt again after being shocked from the events on the island.
At the beginning of the hunt Zaroff followed Rainsford’s trail and found him in a tree, but Zaroff ignored him and kept the hunt on. Rainsford ran into the woods and found a dead tree on a smaller living one and set up his first trap. Zaroff is on Rainsford’s trail like a bloodhound and when he gets to Rainsford’s trap he steps on the trigger. Zaroff knows what he has done, but is too slow to react and the tree injures his shoulder. “Rainsford, if you are within the sound of my voice, as I suppose you are, let me congratulate you. Not many men know how to make a Malay Mancatcher. Luckily for me, I too have hunted in Malacca. You are proving interesting, Mr. Rainsford. I am going now to have my wounds dressed, it’s only a slight one.
Rainsfords is panicked and running for his life, he's also scared of what General Zaroff will do to him when he catches him. Rainsfords force himself towards the gap between these two trees. He got closer to gap to see open water, and then he went to for it, he jumped. ‘“I am still a beast at bay, Rainsfords said, in a low hoarse voice, Rainsfords said this after he jumped off the cliff and swam back to the land. As he swam back he seen a big house, he walked closer to it and seen General Zaroff.
Sanger Rainsford manages to beat General Zaroff at his own twisted game. It seems like all hope is lost, but not for Rainsford. He proves he can do whatever it takes to survive against all odds and he can push through even the toughest of situations. The key to Rainsford’s survival comes from his many survival skills; his true bravery shines through as General Zaroff comes closer to killing him, he is extremely clever; he can act fast when needed and he remains level headed through it all.
Rainsford made three successful traps during the hunt which took out his right hand man and preeminent dog. The third trap just hurt Zaroff’s shoulder. In the end, Rainsford jumped off of a cliff into the sea deep below and later swam to the castle. There, Rainsford and his ruthless predator had one last fight with Rainsford ultimately coming out victorious.
In this story “The Most Dangerous Game” By Richard Connell there is a General named Zaroff who was a hunter. Zaroff thought the the most dangerous game was hunting people. The man that was being hunted was named Rainsford. He had fallen off his ship, and swam to the island, and then found Zaroff. There are many parts in this story, and I wanted to tell you about it. Zaroff has done this “hunting” thing for many years. Now there is one man that is going to stop him.
Not only does he easily find Rainsford on the first day, the general also has excellent reflexes. As declared by Connell, Zaroff had "the sureness of a bloodhound . . . [the] agility of an ape"(Connell 33) When it came to reflexes and observation, General Zaroff was in a league of his own. As a result, this begs the question: why does this lead to his defeat? A flaw that commonly spawns from brilliance is overconfidence and the boredom of being forever unequaled. A lack of challenge, if you will. Of course, the general had plenty of both. Because the general had gotten so bored of hunting because there was no longer a challenge, he sought out new prey. This would not be a such an inconvenience if Zaroff had only been
Zarroff does this in the beginning by offering him all this good food and wine and a nice bed to sleep him while asking him to hunt humans with him, Rainsford refuses and is forced to be hunted by Zarroff. One of the first things Rainsford did to outsmart Zaroff is build Malay man-catcher which injured his shoulder. Then rainsford killed his best dog and his right hand man but Zarroff saw no problem with it and let him go. Zarroff made a lot of mistakes throughout his hunt and saw it as child's play. The mood of these scenes is hopeful because he kills zarroffs dog and Ivan in the process of being hunted and is now feeling a bit more safe. It is clear that near the end of the hunt rainsford is winning the most dangerous game, and becomes the better
Not only did he demonstrate ruthlessness, but he also expressed talent throughout the story. Zaroff wasn’t just a hard worker when it came to hunting, but he was also very talented. "No animal had a chance with me any more. “That is not boast; it is a mathematical certainty. The animal had nothing but his legs and his instinct. Instinct is no match for reason” (R’Connell). Part of the reason why Zaroff is so talented is because he is so confident. “My whole life has been one prolonged hunt” (R’Connell). This is another reason why he is so talented. He has been hunting his whole life. Every single day General Zaroff hunts and works hard to become a better hunter.
Rainsford experienced how it was to be hunted. The general was going to kill Rainsford another day. “The general was saving him for another day’s sport”(Connell 34). He knows how it feels to be played with and tricked. Rainsford was being hunted as if he was an animal. Rainsford was trying to confuse Zarroff of following his trail. “He executed a series of intricate loops; he doubled on his trail again and again recalling all the lore of the fox hunt and all the dodges of the fox.”(Connell 34). He knows that he has to think to outsmart the general. Rainsford was being hunted so he was trying to confuse the general by acting like an animal. Zarroff was the cat and the mouse was rainsford. “The
He was able to use “a huge dead tree” that “leaned precariously on a smaller, living one” to build what is called a “Malay mancatcher” (12). While most people would probably just see two trees and walk past them, Rainsford was able to think creatively and put them to effective use. Even though Zaroff did not get caught by it entirely, the hunter was able to buy himself some time to move to a different area so that he could avoid the general. After he went back to treat his injury, Rainsford “took up his flight again” that “carried him on for some hours” (13). His resourceful thinking had allowed him to use even more time to put his plan for winning this life-risking game into action. Without this helpful asset, Rainsford might have been more prone to giving up and letting himself be killed.
Zaroff is purely unconscious, and has no compassion or remorse for his actions. His demented mind forces him to believe that it is moral to hunt all living creatures, when in reality he is actually murdering a human soul. The general is sadistic as well as arrogant. He is mentally unstable, insane, and he denies the fact that he is committing something as bad as what he is doing. According to General Zaroff, hunting for him has been consumed by boredom and he no longer sees hunting as a challenge. Consequently, he chooses to hunt a certain “creature” with a higher mental stability of the creatures he has hunted before.(Connell 21) As Zaroff became comfortable with Rainsford, he
