Born a son of Jamaican immigrants, educated in the New York public school system and beginning his college education at City College of New York, studying geology, no one would imagine the life this man would lead. This individual progressed to become the 65th United States Secretary of State as well as to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Having tenacity, focus, vision and a desire to win therefore leading to many honored appointments. When you examine his career you see a man that leads his life by holding himself accountable, having that winning spirit, understanding the importance of the people around him throughout my youth each of these qualities are valued in my family. This is evident in is rapid progression of his Army career by the age of 31 he was an Army major. By the time he was 35 General Powell had obtained his MBA and began his political career through a White House fellowship. In 1972, he became a Brigadier General. He was also a trusted adviser in both President Carter and Reagan administrations. President George W. Bush would appoint Colin Powell, secretary of state, obtaining the highest rank in civilian government ever held by an African-American, at that time. There are six books written provide insight into his life lessons, his personal convictions and his strength of character. He is a man of bravery and dignity. Every soldier has faith in Washington, and there is no other man who would be able to encounter as many obstacles and succeed. He guides everyone through our conflicts, and we all gather more strength under his leadership. General Horatio Gates does not have the endurance that Washington has. The high school that Colin Powell went to was Morris High School in New York. Colin studied geology and that’s when he found his passion. He was in the Reserved Officers Training Corps, later he became a commander of a unit. This is what led him to his experience on a military career and gave him direction of his life. After Colin’s graduation in 1958, he became a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He was wounded by a punji- stick booby trap while patrolling the Vietnam border in Laos. Since Powell was a four star general in the army, he saw and understood the other side of the war, whereas most politicians could only understand the economic and political effects of war. Powell’s goal was to end the war entirely in order to save America, and to save America from future half-hearted wars. He also favored globalization because he believed that our world would include new technology and goods so globalization would end wars and the future would bring peace. Powell was also devoted to internationalism, multilateralism, and military restraint. But with many powerful politicians becoming more popular, Powell was shoved into the background and was not very influential. George Marshall was not only a soldier but a statesman as well. He made monumental changes as well as achieving peace. He did this with carefully designed and calculated plans throughout his career. Without a doubt General Marshall is a man of war but even more so a man of peace.Without the many brilliantly devised plans that General Marshall devised, war may have raged on and communism may have spread. Respected by most, yet feared by many, General George S. Patton was one of the most profound leaders the United States Army has ever had. He took part throughout the Mexican Revolution, World War One, and dominating the stage throughout World War Two. His career as an officer took stage shortly after his graduation from The United States Army Military Academy, where he branched as a cavalry officer (Patton, Wikipedia, 2017). Inpatient and young, he eventually went on his first deployment as a lieutenant to take part in the battle of San Miguelito. It was in Mexico that Patton met General John Joseph Pershing, where it is believed that he based a lot of his military leadership styles on the way Pershing led his troops (Pershing, Wikipedia, 2017). Through imitating Pershing, George had some of the most courageous leadership styles known widely throughout, where many praised his bravery, yet several found him foolish.

As a Non Commissioned Officer in the Pennsylvania Army Nation Guard, I realize the importance and value of good leadership. A leader has to be able to understand and support their men, have initiative, be quick on their feet, and accept responsibility for their actions. The personal traits that I look for in a leader are courage, commitment, candor, competence, and integrity. Out of these the most important one to me, is integrity. Colin Luther Powell was born on April 5th 1937, In New York City. Powell’s was raised by his parents Luther Theophilus Powell and Maud Arial in the South Bronx. He attended Morris High School where he graduated in 1954. In 1958, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in geology from the City College in New York. While attending college Powell joined the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) in the military which he really liked. Upon graduation from college Powell was commissioned into the US Army as a second lieutenant. This is where it he began his fruitful and long career being a part of the US Army as well as a civil servant in the US government. In April 1989, Powell while serving in the US Army was advanced up to the level of four star general. Powell retired from the US Army in September 1993 after a successful career. Powell then served as the secretary of state as well as the national security adviser. Being a part of the US Military is what interested me in the decision to read his book.

Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered as one of the greatest leaders of modern humanity. Perhaps the most astonishing aspect of his leadership was his ability to adapt to whatever leadership style was necessary for any specific scenario. He could be a transformational leader if people needed to be mobilized, a servant leader when followers needed to be led by example, or a charismatic leader when he gave any one of his plethora of monumental speeches. Not only could MLK perform in each of these leadership roles, but he excelled at them. Dr. King was one of the greatest, most versatile leaders ever. We will discuss why in the following paragraphs.
