Gender Roles In Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre

Respect, mutuality, equality—what do these three words have in common? They are all fundamental components to what makes a relationship successful and fulfilling. By the end of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, this is the kind of relationship that Jane and Rochester achieve. However, they are only able to arrive at this point because of Jane’s quest for equality through personal independence, something American feminism establishes as unique in a Victorian society reinforced by patriarchal values. American feminism examines portrayals of women characters in literature and in doing so, exposes the patriarchal ideology implicit in works and shows how systematic masculine dominance can permeate the literature (Murfin 299). For example, Jane first encounters Rochester after his horse slips on a sheet of ice, and Rochester sprains his ankle. Having Jane—rather than Rochester—occupy the savior role in this situation allows for the undermining of the patriarchal ideology that dictates that all women need rescuing. The “knight in shining armor” trope continues to be subverted when Jane saves Rochester from the fire that Bertha sets, causing Rochester to offer his gratitude by saying, “You have saved my life: I have a pleasure in owing you so immense a debt” (Brontë 96). This time, Rochester articulates aloud how Jane has yet again physically delivered him from harm. In doing so, he makes the reality of Jane’s recurring rescues tangible, and he highlights the idea that a woman is capable of rescuing a man and it is not always vice versa. Lastly and most powerfully, the loss of Rochester’s vision and hand wholly and completely subverts the concept that the woman in a relationship is always dependent upon the man. Rochester’s physical dependence upon Jane illustrates this, as she must guide him places, read to him, and do what he is incapable of doing with one hand. These physical infirmities function to humble Rochester, further establishing not only his supreme trust in her, but also that she is his equal because of that
