A Doll’s House was written by Henrik Ibsen born in Norway on 1828, who is considered the father of modern prose drama. In 1879 while Henrik was living in Italy he published his masterpiece A Doll´s House (which was written in prose). In the play woman and men role are clearly seen through it described and showed in different ways. He addresses women´s rights as something of importance. Ibsen reflects the fact that in the 19th century life, the role of the women was to stay home, raise the children and attend its husband by helping with the duties.
The role of women in A Doll´s House is reflected by showing firstly that the strength is a characteristic of men and that weakness is one of a women. The author tries using stereotypical gender actions to describe the characters of Nora and Torvald in the play. Nora who is Torvalds wife, is the character that plays the role of that typical 19th century woman which and is portrayed as a victim. Nora allowed him to play dress up with her and no matter what the situation Nora has to consistently remain Torvalds quiet, happy, little doll. Moreover the power Torvald has is seen in situations where Nora is seen useless for him, or he treats her like a child while she stays in that position and role he gave her and acts like a “little bird”. The role of women in this times was really inferior to men and the rights that women later gained where later. The title of the play also refers to a doll which is clearly Nora, dolls must do whatever the controller has them do, and they are silent and never express opinions or actually accomplish anything without the help of others.
