Gender Roles : African Americans

What is a gender role? It is the behaviors that are considered acceptable for people based on their sex. Throughout history, societies have constructed gender roles. As times change, roles tend to change. In the twenty-first century, American society has created the role of women being great academics and men only being athletes. This has not always been true in the past. Although America is not perfect, it is working on intellectual and physical equality.

African-American women have often been an overlooked group with the larger context of American Society. Historically, oppression has been meted out to the African-American woman in two ways. Historically, everything afforded to African-American, from educational and employment opportunities to health care have been sub-par. As women they have been relegated even further in a patriarchal society that has always, invariably, held men in higher regard.

From studying Sociology we know that gender roles are prescribed roles that are assigned to each gender. These roles are prescribed by our culture. Sociologists also use the term “doing gender,” which are day-to-day activities that reinforce or demonstrate the commitment to a gender role. For instance, for men doing gender includes the demonstration of masculinity, showing little emotion, the validation of dominance and power, their outward appearance, and ability to always be a “big boy.”

As I was waiting on the bus on Flatbush Avenue and Farragut, I noticed a long line of people awaiting the opening of a church. It was around 7 o’clock on a Saturday morning and the church door was heavily closed with huge locks that resemble barricade locks. But as for the people, they differ in ages, in genders, however, they were all African-Americans. They were not talking to one another, which show me that, they were not members of the church. In a society, gender roles are the roles that are restricted to males or females on the basis of their sexism. Conventionally, in numerous societies including the western society, it is supposed that females are more encouraged at any platform than the males. It is believed that for the development of a society, females should be treated in an encouraged way because encouragement of the females help in the betterment of society. Earlier, it was considered that females should remain at home and they should maintain the household things rather than working outside because outside work is only for the males, but it was a traditional way of treating women, which has been changed now.

Gender roles refer to the set of social and behavioral norms that are socially appropriate for individuals of a specific sex. Gender roles are never comprehensive, even within a single country, and they are always historically and culturally unpredictable. Gender roles in the United States for one cultural group likely is not true for another cultural group. Similarly, gender roles in the United States have changed drastically over the time period. Gender roles has been the historical evolution from a single family income in which only the male spouse works and generates income, to dual family income or a family in which both spouses generate family income. Gender roles are a common topic today. What are males and females expected to do? What is socially acceptable for each sex? Is it equal among sexes? One may consider that gender roles are influenced by biology, culture, social class, and environment.
